Melty Blood ReACT

deadspace, check your pms. i can fix your problems

ironchef, hows the mbr going dude? hahaha.

im still waiting for online patch =\

Just fine…now

and in the word’s of Bill and Ted:

“Trust this dude, he knows what he’s talking about.”

http://www.himeya.com/ has the games on stock, but the handling fee is high.

http://www.akibado.com/ allows you to make a request for the games. Takes longer but should be cheaper.

VManOfMana, since you seem to know alot about this game, does ReACT have an english patch to it? Thanks again. I’m trying to learn Len right now. x_x Neko-power!

Yes and no. There is a group that is working on a English patch of Melty Blood, but they have only translated the menus so far. Nothing of the storyline has been released yet.

http://revolve.emuxhaven.net/about.html

However, the forums of The Moonlit World, a Type-Moon fansite, contains rough translations to the dialogs of several characters before fighting in story mode.

adds to pseudo-FAQ

Since most of the focus has shifted to this thread and the same questions keep poping, I guess I will just repost my pseudoFAQ in here with some edits:

WARNING: LONG POST

If you have any questions that you think could be good to address here let me know.

VMan’s EFZ/MB 101 (v 1.1)

General

No, these games are not free. Although they are made by fans, distribution costs still have to be covered. But in the end you get cheap games with some being better than commercial games.

The “sequels” of these games are actually upgrades applied to the prvious version. So they can considered to be expansion packs. EFZ has three versions, Melty Blood has two. So if you want the latest EFZ you have to buy three different CDs (and then apply the latest patch available in the developer’s web page), and if you want the latest Melty Blood you have to get two CDs. The upgrades are always cheaper, at least.

In general, the games have very easy combos. That’s beause most doujinshi fighting games borrow the most from Guilty Gear, which also has a very open chain system (no wonder also because GG is the #1 2D fighter in Japan). Also, a lot of cameos are bound to happen.

Where to get them

The only place in English that I know that has all versions of both games is Himeya (http://www.himeya.com). The problem is that they have high shipping and handling fees, making both Melty Blood CDs go from 4500 yen ($45) to $70 dollars (not counting shipping). On the other hand, Himeya is a good resource to see what doujinshi games are relatively safe to find.

The other place where you can try (and where I got ReACT from) is Akibado (http://www.akibado.com). Their system is nice: you tell them what you want, they look the item for you, they give you an estimate, you send your payment via PayPal/CC/whatever, they order the item, they let you know when it arrives to their office, you pay shipping, and they ship to you.

The only requirement is that you have to give them as much information as possible, such as ISBN numbers, photos, full name, or pictures.

You can think of Akibado of a proxy, and assuming that they can find what you ask them, you can order whatever you want from them. Also, they just relelased a system where they let you bid on Japanese auctions, given that you deposit the necessary money with them. Akibado’s handling rate is a lot better than Himeya’s, since it is charged over your total purchase, not every item. Therefore, if you order multiple items you pay a lot less in extra fees.

These guys are very friendy. I have ordered several items with them already, including the Tsukihime limited soundtrack, ReACT, and preordered the PS2 Third Strike limited box with their help, almost at reatail price not counting shipping.

In summary: if you want speed, go with Himeya. If you want a better deal or want to get other items, go with Akibado.

EFZ has been around for a looooooong time. I remember playing the first version of the demo back in 2000 or so, maybe even before.

EFZ is a 100% doujinshi (amateur/independent) game, made by fans. The characters of EFZ are taken from the characters of four games: MOON, ONE, Kanon (for those who read Megatokyo - yes, that Kanon), and AIR, which are games made by the same core team of people and released by Tactics and Key/Visual Arts:

Key/VisualArts
http://key.visualarts.gr.jp/

Tactics/Nexton
http://www.tactics.ne.jp/~nexton/

Warning: sites not work safe

As you might guess, these are all hentai games (the type of games that Otaku no Densetsu makes), but are famous for having great storylines to the point that non-hentai versions still sold like pancakes. Actually, you can notice that the characters of these games exist in a lot of other doujinshi games, especially Kanon and AIR.

There is an anime of ONE and Kanon. ONE is a 3-episode OVA that you will barely understand if you haven’t played the game, but at least it does provide some information (Misaki is blind and Mio is mute, for example). The Kanon anime is a 13-episode TV series that cover most of the storyline of the original game, although it skips a lot of details. An AIR movie and TV series have been already announced.

The people who did MOKA just released a new game: Clannad. So there are hopes that there will be EFZ 4.x (at least I hope). Meanwhile, Tasofro is working with Shanghai Alice, another amateur team, with a new fighter using Shanghai Alice’s original shooting games characters.

Shanghai Alice:

the game
As you might figure by surfing Tasofro’s page, there is more than one version of Eternal Fighter Zero. The files that you can find in the web page are a demo based on vanilla EFZ, and patches for the several EFZ versions. If you get the demo, based on EFZ 1.11, don’t get too used to it - everything is too different in later EFZ version.

There are three versions of EFZ:

Eternal Fighter Zero Renewal (EFZ): Plain Vanilla EFZ. The reason why it is called Renewal is because it is a re-release of EFZ that came out at the same time as Bad Moon Edition. This is version 1.x. Last patch is 1.20

Eternal Fighter Zero Blue Sky Edition (BSE): first upgrade. Adds three characters and balance tweaks. The engine feels different, but not that much. Think of this as the #R of EFZ. This is version 2.x. Last patch is 2.13

Eternal Fighter Zero Bad Moon Edition (BME): You can think of this like the #RR of EFZ. Adds four characters, the interface (bars, character select screen, etc) got a dark mood, more radical changes to the engine compared to BSE (including air grabs) and more than one old character got redesigned/altered (especially Mai). This is version 3.x. Last patch (current) is 3.10

The upgrades can be better described as incremental changes like XvSF to MSHvSF to MvC, but big enough so that BME is too different to EFZ.

EFZ evolved from being a Marvel like game into something more like Guilty Gear mixed with other fighting games: alpha-like super bars, auto guard with parry properties, moves with super armor and autoguard, its own variation of roman cancels, EX moves, grab chains, etc. The chain system is more like Marvel, restricted to jab > strong > fierce > command/super. Also, this game is infinite proof, despite being so free with combos. You MIGHT be able to pull a 100% if you have BAS’s execution and are lucky enough to have full bars, but no infinites.

Before Melty Blood ReACT came out, EFZ was by far the best doujinshi fighting game. Now the ReACT is out, only time will tell depending on how broken ReACT ends up. This is because EFZ is extremely balanced, as it has been perfected over time.

Melty Blood ReACT just got released in May 31st. It is an update to Melty Blood, which was released in 2002 (I think). The game is based on Tsukihime, which originally is an amateur hentai game made by Type-Moon. Tsukihime became so popular for having a DAMN GOOD story that Type-Moon became a commercial company. Their first commercial work is Fate Stay/Night, which is in the same world as Tsukihime, although with a completely different topic.

The anime based on Tsukihime is called Shingetsutan Tsukihime. It is a 13-episode adaptation that was released last year, and has been alread licensed for U.S. distribution by Geneon (formerly Pioneer). As an anime, Shigetsutan Tsukihime is good, but it is a HORRIBLE adaptation, to the point that it is loathed by those that have knowledge of Tsukihime before the anime was released. They just show you about 40% of what Tsukihime is about (being generous) and change half of that, like making Shiki a wuss, took off Ciel’s curry obsession, completely ignored the plot surrounding Akiha, Kohaku and Hisui, and completely changed Satsuki’s story.

In summary, they took/changed so much stuff it’s not even funny. It’s like watching dubbed anime in Saturday mornings.

If you want to read about Tsukihime’s storyline, visit this page:

The Moonlit World

Warning: you can spend hours reading the profiles, details, walkthroughs, etc. Still, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SITE. It also has a plethora of information on Fate/Stay Night. The forums of this site also have discussion on the Melty Blood games.

the game
Anyway, back to the fighting game. Melty Blood is an interesting case of a doujinshi game. The orginal one was created when Type-Moon was still an amateur game, and they teamed up with Watanabe Seisakujo (now French Pan) to make Melty Blood. Type-Moon did all the artwork (so it looks 100% accurate to the game it is based on, unlike EFZ) while Watanabe did the fighting engine (they already had experience by making the Queen of Hearts series, based on characters by Leaf/Aquaplus - To Heart, Comic Party). Type-Moon also wrote the story mode which is a sequel to the storyline of Tsukihime, one year later. Melty Blood ReACT was made after Type-Moon became a commercial company and Watanabe changed name. It also has a story mode that is one year after Melty Blood.

(If you want to know what Tsukihime and MOKA are like, think a LONG version of the story mode with more artwork and no fighting. AFAIK there is no hentai scenes in Melty Blood so don’t get your hopes high on that

So what do we get?

Melty Blood: the result is a fighting game that looks beautiful (3S caliber animation with hi-res 2D backgrounds) but plays horrible (I think this is common with Watanabe). Too floaty for starters, with slow movility, too many clone (and I mean CLONE) characters, and very, very, broken. It dissapointed me badly, especially because I was getting into Type-Moon and I paid Himeya’s high handling rate. There is a patch that unlocks all characters and makes the bosses playable. Not sure if it is on Watanabe’s page (it’s simply called the Nero Patch so you can find it). This is version 1.x

Melty Blood ReACT: this is not a refinement like EFZ to BSE to BME. MB to ReACT is like A1 to A3, or Children of the Atom to MvC2. The game looks better, new characters, new animations, completely redesigned clone characters, new moves, still the very high animation quality, and improved effects. Bigger, Better, Badder. The gameplay got overhauled. It became a very fast, fun game with solid gameplay (well, visit Yukinoze’s vids and see). IMO, This game can dethrone EFZ as the best doujinshi fighting game if it doesn’t get broken like the original (the looks do help). My prediction is that it will be like Marvel: everyone will be broken so that it will balance out, with the low tier being the not so broken characters.
There is a beta version of the patch published in an obscure place of Watanabe Seisakujyo’s web site. This is version 2.x. Patch is version 2.001 (beta)

The combo system is VERY loose: if you haven’t used a move in the chain, its always available, so jab > strong > fierce and fierce > strong > jab are both valid, but you cannot use exactly the same move twice in the combo, unless you jump/land/dash/double jump.

A game translation group called Revolve is in the work of translating Melty Blood and Tsukihime. So far they have only translated the menus of Melty Blood.

Revolve:
http://revolve.emuxhaven.net/about.html

Wow, this game is dope! Which characters are you guys using? So far i’ve been playing with Len.

I’ve been using Nero (Nqwibdiqbd) Chaos mostly. I’ll post some dirty tricks for him tomorrow.

Or better yet, replay files! That’s one great bonus for being a PC game.

Edit: OK, here is the first one. This shows the basic unblockables Nero Chaos can do off of EX Crows. Basically if someone ever air blocks EX Crows, you get a free combo.

[Nero Chaos - EX Crow Unblockables](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Nero Chaos - EX Crow UBs.RPD)

Just put it in your “Melty Blood ReACT\replay” folder, go to training mode and go to replay from the menu, the file should be listed there.

Also I recorded this with version 2.001 if that matters.

I’m confused with all these new characters in ReAct. I watched the anime, thats why I recognize a lot of them, but i’m guessing that the new characters are introduced in the doujinshi/manga that aren’t shown in the 13 ep anime? Anyways this shit is goood.

Nice replay cignus! That is pretty lethal…any more replays? I got an aircombo for Len so far but someone might have found a better one by now.

I got the same problem. Check your pms.

clear, check your pm

anyways, concerning sion in the new patch, i havent had a chance to actually play anyone yet, so im not sure if this is techable or what not…

623c (uh, that dp-like super)
when they tech out, do the 214b whip…
is it just me, or do the whip just grab them out of the air?

ill assume that you can indeed block this, and it isnt a glitch lol

how can i save replays in training mode? if i start a session, when i pause its gone. nothing saved =\

deadspace, i just added you on msn just now ;p

and about fraps, ive been able to screencap and whatever on anything BUT mbr… wtf

Yo Yellow…do you happen to have AIM? Maybe we can work it on AIM. I didn’t get anything last night on msn about anyone adding me to their list so I assumed that you had something important to take care of.

Miyako Arima, the girl in the kung fu suit, was introduced in Melty Blood. She’s supposed to be Shiki’s old foster sister. Sion, the purple-wearing alchemist, is also a new character introduced in Melty Blood.

The anime is a horrible adaptation. All the characters that you see in Melty Blood and Melty Blood ReACT, inlcuding the clone characters, existed before Melty Blood, the only exceptions being Sion and Mech Hisui.

In summary:

Nanaya Shiki is Shiki with his alternate personality. Taken out in the anime (and his original personality got changed as well).

Ciel’s Seventh Scripture (gun) is taken out in the anime. Nanako (the character in the intro where Ciel wears the suit) first appears in Kagetsu Toya, outside the plot of the anime.

Vampire Arcueid (Warcueid) is Arcueid unable to control her blood thirst.

Miyako is a girl of the family Shiki lived with before moving back to the Tohno house. I am not sure, but I think she brielfy apperaas in Tsukihime. Taken out in the anime.

Ren is a succubus or dream demon or something like that that belongs to Arcueid. She first appears in Kagetsu Toya, so she is not part of the storyline of the anime.

Neko Arc is a joke version of Arcueid. Not relevant to the story, but more like a mascot.

Vampire Sion is Sion suffering blood thirst.

Melty Blood’s Satsuki is not the same as anime Satsuki. There is an important plot element that was completely taken off the anime that explains her current state.

Warakia appeared for the first time in Melty Blood, but already existed in concept (member of the 27 Dead Apostles)

All the elements that explain Kohaku’s personality are taken off the anime.

The origin of Red Hair Akiha is not explained in the anime.

Detailed explanations are in The Moonlit World (URL in the long post).

Whenever you see “Invalid” in the hit count it means that the combo is techable.

OK here’s another Nero Chaos trick.

[Nero Chaos Ex Crows Ambiguous Crossup](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Nero Chaos - EX Crow Mixup.RPD) <-- link

He can do an ambiguous crossup with his dash while EX Crows is blocked. Starting from right next to the opponent:

2A(3 hits)-2A(2 hits)xx236C, dash

You should cancel of the 2nd hit of the 2nd 2A here into EX Crows. Cancel it as fast as possible to get the crossup, and delay it a fraction of a second to stay on the same side. It’s virtually impossible for the opponent to predict which side he will end up on.

Here are some basic B&B combos with and without EXs. There are probably way more powerful ones, but these just are short, practical, and consistent.

[Ciel](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Ciel - B&B.RPD)

[Len](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Len - B&B.RPD)

[Warcueid](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Warcueid - B&B.RPD)

Some more B&B combos:

[Kohaku](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Kohaku - B&B.RPD)

[Miyako](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Miyako - B&B.RPD)

[Shiki Tohno](http://home.wideopenwest.com/~lcoffmon4851/ReACT Replays/Shiki Tohno - B&B.RPD)

Miyako is a beast!
