I’m curious, because I used to LOVE these types of games, but they don’t seem to be popular at all anymore. When was the last one released? Was it any good?
I don’t even know if there’s any others worth mentions. Are big ass mechs “passé” to the general public? Is there any interest left in these types of games?
Also, I wouldn’t mind setting up Kaillera to play Cyberbots with anybody (Or is it on GGPO yet?)
Oh wow, this thread is very relevant to my interests! I don’t know about many specific mech oriented fighters, but if you’re willing to compromise and let general sci-fi fighters float into the mix, you could also include Star Gladiator. Besides that, the only other one I can think of that I thought was fairly good (though definitely not properly balanced) was Battle Assault 3 feat. Gundam SEED. It’s certainly no Gundam Wing Endless Duel though. THAT was a freaking godlike game so long as we discount Epyon, who I think is hard banned? Not sure. Also, I thought Gundam vs. Gundam NEXT was a fighting game, no?
I think the lack of interest in these kinds of games really comes from two reasons. First, it’s sort of like you’re saying. It seems that gaming these days in general is starting to consider mechs as somewhat passé and often, I feel that developers ditch the machines in order to bring focus to a more squishy, human protagonist. The second reason that I think is the fact that mechs have overtime started becoming more established in other genres. I’m mostly thinking the 3rd person action game style that games such as the Armored Core franchise, Another Century’s Episode series, and the few entries in the Zone of the Enders series have done. There’s also the Super Robot Taisen series of course which have been doing a good job in the turn-based strategy genre.
It’s not to say these games are bad, but I do agree with you J.Scogz. I really would like to see a new mech fighting game. One concern I really do have is making such a game really unique to mechs like what Cyberbots tried to do with their awesome designs. Otherwise, I feel it’ll be pretty boring mechanics wise since it’ll essentially be no different than seeing human combatants with weapons and jetpacks fighting.
Sadly it seems they are just developed anymore. Personally I really liked the designs of Mech Fighters. Rise of the Robots 2 had some nice ideas and Cyberbots has a really unique gameplay. Wish new mech fighters would be developed.
i remember tech romancer, good times
only me and 2 friends pplayed it, and the funny thing is that our chars were a full circle counterpick
esentially was this, i picked my char and played with friend A with his char beating him cuz his chars didnt have tools against my char, the when played with friend B, he beats me cuz my char didnt have good tools against his char, then friend A & B play and A beats him cuz B didnt have the tools, so all the time that we played no one dominated for that simple fun fact, lol
I rented Marz many many moons ago. If I remember right the controls were slugish and it just didn’t feel good. Also Cyberbots is not on GGPO
The first PC game I owned was the original Virtual On. Could hardly ever make my POS sidewinder controller work with it.:annoy:
Really wish they’d make a new VO for 360 and PS3.
I played Endless Dual in the early 2000s when I first discovered SNES emulators. Born out of my love I developed for the show when it aired on Toonami. Great game. I would play it for hours with Deathscythe. I remember playing the first Battle Assault once at a friend’s house in High School. Didn’t play enough to leave an impression.
The only mech fighter around would be Gundam vs Gundam games on the PSP. I wish those games would get a console so I can atleast play it with other people
Virtual-On 2 was awesome, i always wanted to try those 6$ gundam games at the arcade. bah t hey should make a Gundam G game where you have to match poses.
