So, this Friday as well eh? This is a bit more suitable than Youtube. I’m in Norfolk, VA. Let me know where you are so I can figure out how I intend to get to your place this Friday for Marvel sessions. :woot:
your speech moved me…   now all the marvel players can group hug and stop the hype and just have fun thanks tornadoflame pat on your shoulder
I think otherwise. I think there are two kinds of gamers: the strictly-for-fun kind and the competitive kind. Most people are in the strictly-for-fun group, whereas there are a select several thousand who are in the competitive group.
The strictly-for-fun group just plays games just to play them and have fun while doing it. And the competitive group plays games and strives to be the best at whichever, if not all, games that they play (in usual cases with fighting games). Also the competitive group are the only ones that play in tournaments and MMs against each other and gamble, in that aspect. I’m just one of those in that competitive group.
MMs != competitive, they CAN but simply b/c it is a MM does not mean the players are skilled
1p vs 2p = competitive period.
MMs = ego/show
MMs have their place for HYPE purposes given certain crowds and events
I don’t understand what it means to play competitively outside of playing for fun. When I play, I do both.
There are 2 types of gamers that I have met personally:
those who pick up a game b/c they genuinely like and/or are interested in it
those who want to learn a game b/c it has a big crowd and good return on side-money
I don’t think either one is WRONG, b/c your reason for playing is your reason, but ya just gotta know who you are dealing with. I always have more fun with Type 1
Well, of course, you’re going to have more fun with type 1. I’m a bit of both as well, but I’m more of a competitive gamer than a just-for-fun one. I dunno. That’s just my opinion.
I guess I forgot to mention the aspect of playing under pressure. If you’re just playing the game just for fun, no matter who wins or loses, then there’s no pressure there. You’re just playing the game. However, if you’re playing the game in a tournament or even MMs and you want to win, there’s pressure there.
When it comes down to the top 10 players of the world, you know who would take the cake? Justin Wong.
But do you know why? Because he can play the best under the utmost pressure you or anyone in the whole world, no matter how many numbers you come in or how many you roll deep. He’ll still outplay anybody and the main reason for that obviously is pressure. That’s how you can tell a really good and consistent player from the rest. That’s why Justin Wong stands above the rest. Yipes is one of those players too, but in all honesty, I don’t think he’s as good as Justin is.
You can be great at anything, but when it comes down to the knot, and you’re competing for things such as money (which is a killer in itself, because it leads to greed) and honor, that’s where some people tend to choke up their losses. Some people who have had to play against me in the grand finals of past Marvel tournaments lost it only because they choked up. If they remained consistent and solid, they could’ve possibly had the chance. That’s just my personal opinion.
I understand the kind of person you are and I appreciate that. Everyone appreciates those kinds of players, you’re generous and kind. I like that. The scene loves that.
My MMs might as well be flipping a coin, its the gambling way more than any competitive aspect. Trying to hustle MMs in games for shit money isnt even laughable, its just really really sad:sad: I mean seriously a MM for 100 is a pretty sizable one, a hundo is nothing. Pete you’re laughing at us for sucking at marvel but we’re laughing at you for parroting “money match!?” ad naseum to a bunch of people who have about 400 better things to do then pretend like marvel is relevant to anything, least of all getting your money right.
MM’s are a two way street, why are you making it sound like its hustling? even if one person knows they are outclassed, it may be the only way for them to acclimate themselves to the intensity/pressure level of the other player. its not about the money, its just a mechanism to ensure the best play from both players. This is why I’ve really only tried to MM khang from the pool of MD/VA players, I don’t feel that he’s playing his best/fucking around when we play otherwise. Casuals are fun, but people can and will take it to the next level when there’s something on the line. On that note, I’ll be taking any and all 3S MMs next time I’m down there:tup:
I stopped actively looking for money matches like a year ago. The only game I’d have a chance of winning a money match in is 3S any ways. The only time I’ll ask for a money match is if I really want to play someone at a tournament who’s already asking around for matches or if someone personally calls me out (and even then I’ll just think about it). I prefer just playing for the fun of it and only really take things seriously when the tourney comes around. I’m not the type anymore that makes a list on the internet before a tourney of all the money matches they wanna do. Most of them don’t end up happening and the people you do wanna money match at a tourney already will have a list 20 people long that will probably double once they get to the tourney. Plus…I don’t have as much money as I used to.
