Yeah I’m not a big fan of US commentary. Too much of it is like having Mr.Wizard do an IRC chat play by play, but with vocals LOL. I prefer Japanese commentary where I have no idea what they’re saying and every EX shoryuken they bellow out EEEEEE EKUSSUUUU SSSSHOORYYUUUUU!!! You feel every shoryu. The problem is when you know too much about how fighting games work it just seems like Captain Obvious hanging over the mic and detracts from the match. Unless I’m watching a fighting game I’ve never played before I’d rather just hear direct feed. I’ll listen to it, but it’s not necessary for me either.
Maximilian is like most other popular gaming channels. People buy in to his personality, not his content. They mostly watch because of who he is and not so much what games he plays or even as a real attempt to get good at any fighting game.
Personally I thought he was at his best when he was doing his first few waves of the Assist Me Parody Tutorials , when MvsC3 and UMvsC3 was new and growing.It was fun with all the characters/cosplay while his persona being reserved and informative. The Parodies were really full of effort, Heart, intel, Humour and Production Values.
The early seasons of Assist Me! were easily one of my favourite things to watch on youtube at the time , back in the day. It’s what made his channel special/stand out. But Nowadays he’s just another Streamer/Let’s Player to me. And I generally don’t watch that kind of content much at all.
(Besides Mike Ross and Gootecks Excellent Adventures … if you can even class that in the same category as Let’s Play… although it does seem to be of a a caliber higher than just watching your average youtuber’s Let’s Play/Stream , and seems way more funny/entertaining and more well put together too)
After he went full overboard with Let’s Plays , Streaming and screaming into the camera like a PewDiePie Jr , I started watching him less and less. People call him the FGC Pewdiepie , yup I can totally see that now.
Funny thing , when he plays himself on the Assist Me! show he’s likeable enough , when he does a Let’s Play/ Streaming / doing a non-turoial/ non-parody video as his real self , he’s kind of annoying to me … lol …
Pretty much never watch his channel nowadays , except for the odd new parody tutorial or so , but ever since the Assist Me cast expanded , his friend took off the Doom Costume and the Dog started talking , it’s never really been quite the same.
But I guess his antics helps grow interest in fighting games in general and he is one of the more beginner friendly community faces that helps draw new players in and breaks things down for them in layman’s terms , so I guess that’s a good thing in the end , no?

Have you guys ever considered people watch him because he’s entertaining and not exactly because he’s knowledgeable at fighting games?
He makes the fighting game community feel warm and welcoming, hell you could literally make him wear a white robe and call him jesus, he has the hair and beard for it.
He’s closer to your regular guy, rather than your hardcore veteran who’s been playing the same game every day for 8 years, and this makes him relateable. Certainly more so than assholes like oh idk Lowti3rgod, and Marn who literally killed Guilty gear until Xrd because he rigged the brackets.
In a Nutshell, basically one of the FGC’s premier Poster Boys. Whether you like him or his content, you can’t deny the contributions he made to the FGC.
This isn’t a thread about why people watch him. In fact if you actually read the thread, most people know and understand why people watch him. It’s a thread about why people hate him, the explanation and reasoning behind it, and whether you like it or not the reasons people like him don’t make him appeal to everyone.
Then maybe I just didn’t put it in the right words, honestly I don’t see why people would hate him or his content. Or at least use the word hate to describe it such a strong word, and so unneeded.
It’s been explained. Just because he’s a good face to the casuals doesn’t mean I need to like his content. His content sucks, but it isn’t made for me or my demographic, it’s made for people who aren’t really involved with the FGC. He’s a youtube personality.

I’ve been a subscriber of his for a few months now and generally enjoy his content, but even I have to admit the fake “hype” gets a little annoying at points. He may not be the best fighting game player out there but he’s still pretty good, and I’ve actually learned a few things from his Third Strike videos. I just think he’s usually a fun guy to watch.
In a way, feel free to ridicule and mock me for being a worthless, ignorant piece of garbage that deserves to be shot dead in the streets.
