The backdash Ryu is the bane of Laura and Chun players lol. Best you can do is make them twitchy and lure them out, or try to read their fireball pattern.
I agree. If you mess with their heads, the 50 damage you lost on a sub-optimal combo will be more than made up for the stuff you can get away with once you’ve got them conditioned. Some people were getting away with three meaty EX command grabs in a row at NCR,* the sky’s the limit.*
I think this matchup is won or lost on Ryu’s wakeup. You don’t have a lot of opportunities to get in because his damn anti-air jab stops everything that is DP doesn’t already, and his fireball is very good (use your meter wisely). Still, he doesn’t do as much damage as Ken, so I think it’s much easier to make up ground on him once you knock him down than it is against Ken. Plus he doesn’t have anything as tricky as Ken’s dive kick either to allow him to get in on you, which gives you a chance to deal your own footsie damage, even if he generally wins there.
So, assuming you both play equally well, you’ll at some point knock him down and be down a bit on life. Then, like @Oyamoo says, you need to get in his head. If you can get in his head, you’ll easily make up the damage ground and win. If you can’t and he can escape or DP successfully, you’re back to an uphill battle.
It’s a struggle but a good kind of struggle. I enjoy fighting Ryu’s. I think it’s a tough mental game for Ryu players too. It’s possible to say this is 6-4 but I could also say it’s 5-5, since all you have to do is outsmart him a bit. I think Ken is the far tougher matchup, even if you outsmart Ken he just needs to get one lucky connect into V-Trigger or a lucky dive kick and you’ve basically lost, it’s really hard to catch up after that. With Ryu though, he has no tricks to get in, and when he does at least he needs to shimmy you like 4 times to kill you first, ample opportunity to come back.
Come on guys, I was hoping to see some stuff like when Los mentioned that st. Mp St. Mp is a 4 frame gap. Where is the tech at?
I’ve been suffering against good ryu’s myself but I still respect it. I’ve learned that u can’t play him in his range cause yiure giving him what he wants. Which is to stay right out of outside sweep range. Naturally, this is when you have no meter. I do what I can to ignore the fireballs and have them come over to me. Ryu have tatsu and St ryu to stop you from waking up with jab, back dash and attempting to tech a grab. I typically take the risky approach by tossing a lp elbow to close the gap I only jump in outside of Dp range (if yiu don’t hit a button you’ll be close enough but too fat to get a Dp.) helps them think twice when anti airing.
Btw my cfn is Defendthenorth if anyone is interested in getting games in
It is a really annoying fight. I feel like I’ve made significant improvements in many of her bad matchups (Chun, Cammy, Karin, Gief, etc) but this one still sucks. A patient, defensive Ryu simply outclasses anything Laura can do. It’s not a completely hopeless fight, but for the most part you’re relying on them to make mistakes.
Yeah its rough, and for a character we’re supposed to be playing as a heavy mixup/50/50 playstyle, its even more infuriating that we have to adjust ONLY for him. Even with Ken we have a bit more leeway in what we can do.
Man I’m having a serious f*ck Ryu day. Does he really need 17 good anti airs? Does he need to get such advantage on every f-ing knockdown when the best we can hope for is being +2 after a back throw?? Capcom, you need to buff laura this is out of hand.
So according to those numbers I need to use standing fierce and axe kicks more when I play as Ru.
I decided to mess around with Laura after doing her survival mode (easy of course) for fight money. She’s a blast to play. I fought a few Ryus as well. Beat most of them. Lost to a jump happy one. He realized I didn’t know how to anti-air him and took advantage of that fact. One of my favorite things about a lot of online Ryus is that they love to throw out his sweep all willy-nilly. I block and respond with one of my own or I let him eat a standing roundhouse. #feelsgoodman
Try experimenting with fwd hp in neutral. I usually don’t use that move a lot, except maybe against Bison, but I found it to be really good in the Ryu matchup. It can completely shut down his fireball game. You’ll eat a few fireballs yourself in the process, but it’ll trade more often than not, and you can keep to pressure going.
If ryu keeps doing standing jab when you jump him then just have more patience and stop jumping at him. Like ghost writer said on here before, this mu is won or lost on ryu’s wake up
