Matchup in AE: Gouken vs Zangief

1 year Gouken player first time poster. I played 3 games with bbq this afternoon and he beat the snot out of me first 2 games, but I got best of him in the 3rd round. Lots of neutral jumping.

He runs over you? How so? Is he always on the offensive? Is he always poking you out with standing medium punch and crouching jab? Does he do things like inch forward with standing roundhouse and sweep and then SPD or mixup?

Please elaborate, as I find myself fairly comfortable with this match.

…especially without trying cr.lk , cr.mp , dj.lp , dj.rh , etc., what Im getting at is shrinking the hitbox helps while crouching to alleviate some of these pressures. You may want to jump out with a normal. Perhaps jump away or back under the opponent as they try to cross you up, or try jumping at the crossup, sometimes the hitboxes pass thru oddly yet predictable once you get used to these off the wall approaches.

Stay labbin!

Sorry for the late response…I was on vacation. He does all and none of those. He doesn’t rely on any particular pattern of play which makes him very dangerous. He’s very good at staying outside footsie range/blocking/punishing footsies. I try to make it tough for him to get in on me but this is how he gets in…if that makes sense. I’m working hard to stay standing and I think that’s how he’s getting through. Once I’m on the ground, he’s psychic. More often than not, I’m getting punished for whatever choice I make on wake up…jump out, dash, block, ex tatsu, ex flip… You know how you can beat certain players regularly even though they are really good, just because of their style of play or maybe because you got in their head at some point? That’s how I feel about this guy. He’s got my number or at least I believe it to be so.

LOL he doesnt have your number, I just believe he has a solid handle on playing Gouken, or maybe characters without a solid DP. I played him the day before yesterday and I must admit he’s a very very good Gief. He does a really good job of mixing empty jump SPD, to cross ups, and this one thing I’ve never ever seen a Gief do before which is sweep on our wakeup. Its smart because if we tatsu we completely whiff. Its also smart in the sense that if we try to jump on wakeup to avoid SPD we get swept because he’s placing it meaty and then we’re in the loop again. I was impressed because personally I thrash Giefs no problem. We only played twice though and I started to pick up on patterns and then something happened and we got disconnected. But we added eachother and will probably play again in the future. No slack though, he is undoubtedly very good.

On another note, I did find out that you can diagonal backwards j.mp Giefs lariat on your wakeup. I was simply trying to stop any crossup/n.jump or ANYTHING because I was knocked down and in the vortex. So I woke up with backwards j.mp, and I buffer tatsu into all of my j.mp’s so it looked pretty bad ass lol. I know whatever Gief I was playing must’ve thought I was psychic or something. I’m kinda feeling like he delayed his lariat though because sense would suggest that you couldnt wakeup jump a meaty lariat. (Thinking) Or maybe I caught him in the middle of his rotation. Hmmm…will test thoroughly when I get off.

I’m happy to hear from one such as yourself, dek, that I’m not the only one who sees how good he is. I enjoy fighting him for the competitive nature of the fight but he can be pretty obnoxious as a person which puts me off. We have had many matches and through them I’ve upped my game considerably against other Giefs/grapplers but he still wins most of the time. I’d be fine with that but he messages me crap like “Why you runnin?” (Duh…because I am a zone based character and because you knocking me down is bad juju? It’s not running, it’s keeping optimal distance, dick!) and taunts a bit too much for me to like HIM, but his Gief, I like very much.

Oh man, really? I haaaaaaaate people who taunt. It actually makes me quite angry and then I REALLY start whooping on whoever the taunter is. But when we fought we were in a room with another one of my buddies, blkwolverine, a very good E. Ryu player and we were all on mic. When I saw him I instantly remembered your post up there and said, “This is the guy Climaxter was talking about”. Over mic I mentioned to him that I heard his name in the forum and heard that he was pretty good. We played, he didnt say too much of anything so I dont know. He sent me a few messages afterwards but they were all good messages lol. But if you say so then I’ll take it as truth and watch out for it. Where ya been man? Havent seen you on in a while. We need to run some.

I got married and then was on my honeymoon in Aruba for 10 days…so overall I’ve been off the map for a little over two weeks. I’m down for some sets of course. I picked up the stick today and I felt good, strong…maybe even a little better than before. Perhaps the time away has allowed my subconscious to absorb some details it was working on but needed the downtime to work through. Ahh, the zen of fighting games.

RE: bbq camel lips. Perhaps he gives you more respect because you are better at the aggressive game than me…or maybe he’s waiting for some more matches to try and figure you out…

Also make Himlariat w lp hasp to bait the lariat then fadc and catch him w a dj mp>air tatsu

Hey Takin, I think theres a bit of typos up there and I dont get what you’re trying to say. Make him lariat with lp who?

Like this old vid but instead lp hado>fadc dash jmp>tatsu

Haven’t practiced in a while but u can setup a nice lariat trap. The fb almost passes thru him but jmp hits then the fb almost same time as tatsu

Another chip trap. Funny thing here is if they crouch they eAt j.mp>tatsu

Holy shit man…that’s insane

bbq? He seem to like playing with Gouken a lot. He invites me -very- often.

What area are you playing in…northeast? PSN? Let’s get some matches!

Congrats!!!

Wow it’s weird that everyone has played bbq camel lips. I played him a while back and he was talking trash, but I suspect the same thing here that he probably gives you more respect if you earn it so to speak. Either way I found out this week that I need to brush up on my geif game

PSN, North**West. **Sorry mate but I think the lag will just frustrates both of us.

Just went to a local and lost to a Gief, who went on and got first.
Wasn’t a big thing, free entry single elim. Used Fei first because I didn’t know he used Gief. Wasn’t patient enough, started getting antsy when counterpick with Gouken. Didn’t remember that I saw the same guy alt Gouken and go against Fchamp in some casuals. Needless to say, I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread much more.

Locals feat. Fchamp? U in Cali?
