I realize this question has been answered many times before but…
How does one go about figuring out a match-up between two characters?
For example, MKX just came out. What is the criteria people use to determine the match-up in Kung Jin’s Bojitsu vs. Quan Chi’s Sorcerer? (I’m only using those 2 characters and styles for an example.)
Match-up criteria changes based on character knowledge over time. It’s basically a ratio of who will win in a set of 10 games.
They are usually determined by competitive player experiences with the match-up.
For example, “I think the quan chi match-up for kung jin is bad, 3-7” “nah man it’s a 5-5”. Half the time until a high level player says something it will be debated for eternity and even then some.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as A LOT goes in to determining the match-ups. For example can X character escape from a specific trap? if not that match-up could become worse for X character.
AFAIK people just weigh the characters’ tools against one another. The actual numbers just represent how good or bad a matchup is. Characters with bad wake-up will have bad matchups against characters with good Oki, characters with little mobility will have bad matchups against zoners, etc.
