against him you did basically nothing wrong - you RAPED him - but he also didn’t do a lot. he didn’t anti-air you once, ever.
the RCF’s were great. My only qualm about those is if you have them in the corner there’s no need to do it, the chip stacks up I guess but you’re better off frame trapping him with your BnB offense and staying in there with jabs, shorts, forwards, and the occasional beefy close fierce. if you have him in the corner you might as well frame trap him and make sure there is nothing he can do to get out. once you leave yourself with a -2 (which is why EX is ok since it’s even now, but still kinda hard to justify the meter use) he can boom without having to worry at all and you’ve lost your momentum. i mean, he can boom and you can jump over it, but there’s a point here where you can stay at a very close range and just harass him, as long as you check c. mk (punishable on block) and st. fp (pretty good move but your shit is faster) he will get nervous quick. choke him of meter by baiting a flash kick and you’re golden. it’s all about control.
RCF’s primary use for me is just push em to the corner. That’s why I’m happy if I can get a safe jump cause I just stack an OS to beat a backdash / reversal if I can and then just pile on the RCF. they’re in the corner now and they have to deal with it. Against guile if i do a safe jump I actually will probably use the EX RCF in this instance for the 0 on block so that in this scenario Guile is less likely to be able to get a boom out. So I wouldn’t say you did a bad job with the RCF’s at all, those worked great for you.
The j. lk and j. fp / hk mix up is really strong against guile and I have you guys to thank for opening my eyes about j. lk. the grab box is smaller, someone said that in a thread but i can’t remember who or where - that’s really useful information and obviously gives Guile major headaches. the j. hp has a pretty decent chance of beating his c. fp too, so if you can make him guess in a scenario where guile is supposed to dominate, then boom, you’re raping. and that’s what you did.
otherwise, not sure what to say. he was mindfucked so bad his brain just turned to plaster. nice round but you gotta step up the competition if that’s what your local game is like. nothing to learn from creaming someone 5-0. find somenoe who can do that to you!
For the people who still want EX ST to have invul frames, let me see if I can help you out.
Vega controls mid range well, possibly better than any other character in the game. He has pokes that break focus, cover angles, out-right counter the best pokes of other characters. This pretty much makes dealing with Vega at mid-range a huge problem and leads to him getting in damage/pushing you to the corner. His strong poke game also leads to him building a lot of meter (yes, it’s quite a bit). Now, with all of that mid range dominance he needs a weakness, a way for the opponent to get in besides through the front door. That method is jumping a poke and pressuring the recovery.
ST on hit is amazing. It does good damage and leads to situations that are so good you can toss equipment and pick it back up if you want to, as well as get a safe jump against every character in the game (3f dp? An empty jump is a safe jump. It doesn’t always have to be empty, so it’s still a threat). That safe jump can easily lead into a block string into strong RCF that gives Vega about 1/2 of the stage.
What happens when you combine Vega’s strong mid-range game, meter building ability and ST on hit with a situation where, if Vega has meter and whiffs a low strong I can no longer jump because he gets the great situation of ST on hit? You can argue Chun and her low pokes (i.e. sweep) with EX SBK, but that’s just silly. Her pokes aren’t as good as Vega’s (yes, I believe that). That is why Vega will most likely never have an invul EX ST.
I would really really like all of you Vega mains to watch this vid of MRoss and PChamp talking about their SBO experience in Japan.
They talk about character selection (Yun//Yang/Fei/Viper/Makoto prominence) and the state of high-level play in America and Japan, they also mention Vega in a couple examples regarding Japan’s differing views on Vega vs Honda. Very insightful stuff.
