i will give you my scenario for using ex palm , dash , U1 wich is 535 damage
lk senkyutai dash , lk TP
hk senkyutai 2 * lk TP
(opponent’s DP whiffs)====> hit it!!! ex palm dash(depending on the distance to the opposite wall) U1

In that case it’s rather character specific, very situational, and does 55 damage more than raw ultra at the cost of a bar, not to mention that it’s far more likely to be dropped (not something that I think should be a major issue, but certainly one that shows up, even with really good players). Which isn’t to say that being able to do Gief’s ultra damage is a worthless pursuit, but rather that trading a bar for a one-off 55 damage is probably not worth it with Yang most of the time.

Assuming that it’s not going to already kill your opponent (which you should always do, but that narrows its use even further), you can hit level 3 focus in most of those situations instead (or, failing that, level 2) and go straight into corner carry or a reset, while keeping both the options that having more bar allows you and the ultra for the dozens of other ways that Yang has to connect it.

If it’s something so unsafe that’s punishable by EX Hands, and if you want to do more damage before the Ultra without spending a bar, wouldn’t be better to cs.MK and Ultra 1, instead of Focus Ultra 1.
Because Focus Attack counts as 2 attacks in the damage scaling right? So the Ultra will be scaled after a Focus Attack.

Ultras themselves are scaled as two attacks as well.

Scaling gets a little confusing (they stunned? enough time to hit a jumping attack? would the FA do more than the jumping attack? how many hits have they taken? damage close enough to round up or down?), so I’ll let someone else answer the damage values.

the goal here is to score the most damaging combo possible as punish:this is by far the most damaging one with simply 1 bar considering that u can’t jump HP (which is by the way less damaging but with no bars)

Yea. Focus lvl 3 crumble, dash in and ex palm, than dash Ultra 1 mid-screen does a lot of damage. A good counter hit set up is doing 3 crl.lk xx ex palm. You can follow the ex palm with HK Dp, Ultra2, or dash in Ultra 1.

Good damage using 2 bars (corner only and very hard to do):

Jump with HP or HK, s.HP xx medium palm xx FADC, s.LP, cs.MK, medium palm, medium Senkyuutai

420 damage

Yeah, we were talking about that a couple of months ago. I still can’t get the 1 frame after the palm fadc reliably. I think if they gave us an extra frame on that it’d be really useful without making sweeping changes to his gameplay, but I have little hope of that.

Change your PPP or KKK button to select and bam; plinkable jabs.

I had that suggestion a few months back. Guess I just need more practice. That said, being able to go into cl.mp would be pretty swell, too.

You could do cr.lk first as well, since it’s 3-frames instead of 4, and it’s plinkable without changing your buttons.

But then you don’t get the launcher, not sure the combo would be worth it in the end with cr.lk.

KKK button is a solid advice, i know a couple of fei players who have been using that for a while.

Yeah, the options off of cr.lk are somewhat poor by comparison. I’m gonna go try to learn to plink with select again, though. Thanks for the reminder.

also the one bar combo is easier on gief due to some funky falling animation…try it and tell me about it (if it 's new or not)…

i think you can also do ex palm, mp palm, far fierce. i think its like 415 or something

but on a certain distance u can do ex palm,mp palm,ex senkyutai without fadc(like 3 squares from the corner)

Yeah, I usually go for the reset unless I know I can kill them with the ex rollkick.

So do you guys go for damage in the corner or resets?

I find the cr.lk xx lk teleport mixups to be extremely effective after a corner palm. On most characters you’ll land in front of them. And you can go into the same mixups again with st.lp, st.mk, mp/hp palm. I’ve never had anyone that blocked it correctly. And if you have U1 and he’s cornered this is pretty much my bnb combo for huge damage.

Or you could reset them and then nail them with a command grab, go into a forward jump lk divekick, another palm. The possibilities are endless.

I like launcher > jhp to reset in the corner and go for safe mixup with crossup jmk since it will make a dp whiff so that their scared to mash afterwards then you can do w/e next time your in that situation.
