Marvel Vs Capcom 1

^^Not sure that I understand your English but if I do, I do not agree.

Thats it!? Wow. . .

So no footsies?
Strategy?
Traps?
Zoning?

Ridic/

…ok that was fun. So who wants to discuss actual strategy for this game instead of making blanket statements?

There’s no footsies traps or zoning in high level play. In the highest level of play you just build meter and duo, or infinite. THAT’S ALL.

Since I did one for xmvsf, might as well do one for MvC. Me and mah boi LK strung together a list of the best player characters for Marvel Vs. Capcom. No offline players are mentioned except for Magneto Maniac, cause they all suck basically. (note: notable mentions are not in order.)

LOL @ people talking shit about me, when they cant beat me. Who the fuck is we_are_venom? rookie? or rice?

First of all. Noobs shouldn’t be trying to even give any information on this game since its most likely going to be wrong. Jeffs shit was accurate for the most part, except where the fuck am I for wolverine and strider?

As far as actual gameplay and strategy is concerned, MvC 1 is based around Duos and touch of death combos/infinites.

And a deep understanding of the game mechanics is also needed for what you would call a ground game. I dont think people should call it footsies, because footsies is a street fighter term, and it isnt anywhere near as complicated in this game as it is in street fighter.

The godfathers of this game always will be.

C.S. - Pioneered wolverine, invented wolverines reset glitch combos.

Divine - Also helped shape what wolverine is today, and is one of the true veterans of this game.

T-Kimura - A veteran and top player who nobody likes, but who has undeniably contributed to this game in more than one way.

Dark Cloud - Most likely the oldest veteran and most experienced player. Top player.

Vice Versa - Vice Versa pioneered War Machine as far as I know, collaborating with AC Slayer in numerous MvC1 combo videos. He’s known for having the best touch of death war machine at this point and also is a veteran from kaillera.

Cow - Apparently cow came out of nowhere and started dominating well known top players in ggpo almost immediately. Cow ended up shaping wolverine into what he is today, as well as turning characters such as lilith into a higher tier.

Magneto Maniac - Known for beating Justin Wong in a money match around 2007, a match that Divine had bet 1k on and was paid in full by Floe/Marn via paypal. Known for his signature Gold War Machine / Strider team.

Also it’s funny how people say I have the worst offense, when it’s basically matchup specific really. All cow does is mash wolverine infinites to lock you down in the corner and to him that is good offense. When all you have to do is standing fierce his colossus and then call psylock and he runs face first into it. This isn’t me turtling, this is me exploiting cows mistakes over and over again.

Cow and divine, two of the best wolverines, know how to consistently lock you down with wolverine while avoiding colossus and being hit, by timing their attacks basically. I am not good at this, nor have I ever been successful with this strategy, so opposed to a rushdown wolverine I play a fluid wolverine who adapts to the matchup/player.

If I am facing cow or divine, I KNOW they know the timing for first attack at the start of the match. This tells me it is a risk for me to attempt it. It could go either way. If you get hit with wolverine once your character is dead. The general gameplay may look like turtling if I am fighting certain characters or players. Because this is how you win. But see noobs like to say oh he turtles or look how boring his gameplay is. I play to win, not to be entertaining.

If anyone wants any help with this game message me on aim: snggpo or msn: paydurent13@hotmail.com

I’ll be able to give you a decent understanding about how to compete in this game. But then again, this game is over 12 years old. It should just be played for fun at this point.

Failed to mention you in the list. Fixed.

This isn’t true.

There are traps and “footsies” sort of.

And zoning.

The traps are, guard breaks, and strider orb setups, devilot, etc. “Footsies” would be like, me keeping you in place with venoms cr.fierce, while building meter.

“footsies” can also equate to knowing which normals are faster startup, have better range, and more active frames.

For instance at the start of a match, I know wolverines standing and crouching light punch is 1 frame, meaning its practical to go for the first hit on every single character, because a lot of characters dont have a 1 frame normal, so they obviously will have to block at the start of the match if you time it right.

It’s also relevant to know your characters normals when you intend to rush in or punish something. A lot of characters normals have really weird properties.

Like wolverines standing MP, he can cancel it with down. Meaning you can literally lock them in place by walking forward, hitting MP and tapping down instantly after and repeating, and the range on it is decent enough for it to be ok for that use. It generally isnt that great though unless you do the MP infinite to lock them in place, as its faster and it can get around push blocks. If you time wolverines mp cancel and dashes right you can rush back in before the opponent recovers from a push block. This is how cow and divine play wolverine, as they HAVE to block everything, and there is no way to escape it unless they guess wrong and dash at the wrong time, and you have to neutral jump to escape because neutral jumps are 1 frame, and diagonal jumps are more than 1 frame so you will get hit if you try to jump away diagonally.

The wolverine trap is also good because even if they block everything you build 3 meters for free while all of this is going on, you can then duo or do whatever.

But to be able to execute the trap, you basically have to be perfect. You cant mess up (divine and cow both mess this up sometimes). I don’t even attempt it. I don’t need it or want to risk it. If you mess it up and eat an assist you just lost wolverine.

A great wolverine tool I utilize and that people have stolen from me (t-kim) is using wolverines MP cancel to build meter.

You can literally build level 3 in like 10 seconds by whiffing MP repeatedly using the down cancel. It’s perfect for finishing the job or gaining an early advantage vs players who hide in the corner. If you want to get really nasty you can use team cow ( Wolverine Lilith) and use wolverines mp cancel to build level 3, Duo, and then use the wolverine lilith duo which does more chip damage than any other duo in the game.

It does like 50% or more off raw chip damage. You have to time the supers though so that they can’t super jump when one ends. Cow was the first one who started using that duo because of the chip damage alone.

I’m liking this info you’re bringing, sir!

Abnormal: thanks for the info. Can you link up any video examples of Cow’s Lilith-Wolverine? I wasn’t able to track anything down on my initial attempt.

Also, I’d appreciate if people kept their petty GGPO rivalries out of this thread before they start up again for the umpteenth time. Let’s try to keep this discussion as much about learning the game itself as possible instead of turning this into an internet pissing contest. No one that wants to learn the game mechanics and strategy really cares in the end.

Currently there’s no youtube’d videos of cow using this team in the way I mentioned, although divine most likely has replays. The reason for this is, I should have been more clear when I talked about this team. Cow experimented with this team, but didn’t really use this team in serious first to 10’s, simply because of certain matchups.

Like I am pretty sure he beat DarkCloud with that team only because wolvie/lilith was perfect for DC’s Hulk/Venom team. But lilith really isn’t too great of a character, like cow made lilith into a really great character, but as far as competing with the top tiers, she doesn’t really do that well. She can do well on like wolverine because she has this 50/50 mixup after a knockdown.

She can air dash and attack instantly when she jumps to attack high on opponents who are waking up. This obviously is meaty so you will have to block it, but the mixup is the fact that, not only can lilith attack you high when you wake up, she can also attack you low. The jump and air dash is so quick that you cannot react to what she does. You HAVE to guess right if shes going to attack high or low. MvC1 has a LOT of these high low mixups as well. Like one basic one that EVERYBODY uses is the fake jump in and instant low. Imagine you have strider orbs, and you are wave dashing at your opponent, pushing him to the corner, you can then jump at your opponent while they are locked down and you can 50/50 mixup them. Are you going to attack in the air? If so, are you going to attack twice in the air before you land? Or just once and then land and attack low? Or are you simply going to just land and attack low? You see what i’m saying? This is the main strategy with strider. It’s what makes strider a top tier character. While orbs is activated he can build a whole meter while you are in block stun, so that by the time his orbs end, he can simply activate it again and repeat, and you can do nothing but block.

The best team in the game in my opinion is, Gold War Machine and War Machine, and if you look up videos of T-Kimura using this team you will see why. You can’t combo gold war machine, all you can do is hit him when he is open. He can interupt your combos and attacks with his own and he never gets stunned from attacks. With that being said, he can simply jump in place zoning you with his normals keeping you from getting near him/hitting him and then he can do the double war machine duo when he gets level 3, which is the second best duo in the game in terms of chip damage, and probably the best duo in the game for other reasons.

Both war machines do war destroyer back to back and the chip damage is literally insane. And all T-Kim has to do is repeat this strategy.

However there are ways to kill off gold war machine, but it takes a LOT of patience and skill. There is a video of Cow beating T-Kimura really bad using wolverine and red venom. Wolverine has the tools to own gold war machine, but it isn’t easy at all.

This video is kind of old but definitely educational

Keep in mind T-Kimura is well known as being a cheater. He drags his emulator window while hes being combo’d to freeze the game to ruin the other players timing, so that they end up dropping their combo.

I don’t mean to double post but I thought I would share some more mixups and strategies. In MvC1 unlike XvS, when you dash, the character dashes the same frame you input the dash. The dashes are fast and when your character ends up behind your opponent, they turn back around to face the opponent extremely fast. Not instantly but very fast.

The reason this is important is because it allows players to mixup the opponent while their second character is coming onto the stage after their first has been killed. It’s a 50/50 mixup. Are you going to dash under them and attack from the other side? Or are you going to just stand there and then attack when they land?

This seems really ridiculous, but because MvC1 is so fast, this is a definite 50/50. You don’t really have time to react to either, you have to guess. You can get hints as to what your opponent might do based on where they are standing or how they are acting before you come into view, but simply because they can dash under you and cross you up at the last instant before you touch the ground and immediately attack from the other side, you aren’t going to know. You have to guess.

There are ways to defend yourself against this somewhat. Using normals that cross up and attack from both sides. Like with ryu’s airborn MK, or wolverines airborn HK. The problem is, this itself is a risk because instead of actually crossing you up, who knows they might attempt to launch you instead for a full combo.

Or if they are really good, they know how to lower their hitbox to the point where any air attack will miss them. Even from the other side. If you attack at any point in the air, when you land you are vulnerable and recovering. So if I see you attacked in the air from wherever in the screen after a normal jump, I can dash at you and punish you when you land. So you have to take all of this into account when you are deciding what to do vs an opponent who is about to drop into view.

About Guard Breaks though. During a normal jump, you are able to block once in the air and that is it. After a super jump you may block twice. And I am not talking about blocking two normals within the same block string, they have to be two different block strings.

Luckily when an opponent is dropping into view after their first character died, the game sees this as a normal jump, so guard breaking them is really easy. What makes a character like war machine so good is that he can 200% infinite using guard breaks. Wolverine also has corner guard breaks but they require a good amount of precision and understanding of the game mechanics.

Now a lot of characters in this game have infinite combos, but the one important thing you all should know about the combo system, is the reset glitch in MvC1.

Basically there is a glitch where the game gets confused and thinks you dropped the combo, but your opponent is still in hit stun and is still in the “combo”. You can achieve this glitch by delaying your attacks during your combos to the point to where the game gets confused as to if the character is still in the combo or not. I’m sure theres a better way to explain this, or a more technical way, using frame data or some bullshit, but really you don’t have to understand exactly why it works, just as long as you understand that it works and how to do it. The glitch resets the damage scaling, and the combo counter, meaning all of your normals and attacks do full damage once again after the glitch which is one of the reasons the mvc1 combo mechanics are so good.

The weird thing is, this glitch doesnt work on the CPU, its almost as if capcom added it on purpose to give the game more depth or something in the vs modes.

There are combos that do this reset glitch on its own without you having to be precise or delaying anything, and an example would be wolverines corner juggle. This combo itself is the reason why wolverine is probably the best character in the game. After an otg wolverine can juggle his opponent a good number of times depending on which character it is, using standing MK x2, cr.Fierce and repeat. This combo is character specific and doesnt work on others. The combo actually is different for every character because some characters fall quicker than others, and some just have different hitboxes.

Generally though once you learn the character specific variations, the combo reset glitches them and you can then relaunch them or super. It’s ALWAYS a 100% combo if you did it correctly.

i fuckin lold cuz 90% of this list is true

how do you do WM jab reset in flight mode?

It’s:

LP, 3p, LP, repeat

You time the LP’s, in a steady rhythm, and it should reset after the second one or so, and if it doesnt you can keep doing it until it resets.

To continue extend the infinite after fly time runs out you need to perform the refly combo, which is, down+MK(knee), UP+HP / UP+HK, fly, LK, etc

I ended up finding some Lilith matches here:

It’s pretty good with some nice resets, but nothing too spectacular since the character itself isn’t really that capable. Still, at least he’s using her for the right purpose (chipping duos). Cow just seems to be a lot better that his opponent, so he’s toying around from what I can tell.

The reset combo glitch that is referred to in the above posts used to be commonly known as “uncombo” and it’s quite old, actually. Although there looks to be plenty of newer applications found in recent years, such as the Wolverine resets seen in plenty of videos. All that is needed depending on the varied character weights and dropping speed is to wait a bit in between juggled hits and your next hit will reset, essentially creating an FSD in many cases where it normally wouldn’t happen in other Marvel games. It’s a pretty ridiculous “feature”, actually. I’m really surprised that it was never removed post-beta. The worst part is it seems to benefit the best characters much more than the ones that weren’t that good to begin with. I wouldn’t mind it so much if the crappier characters would get better with this in play kinda like cvs2 w/RCs but it didn’t really work out that way in mvc1.

wow yall crazy with that list

Yes the list is silly, but Im glad it got Abnormal here posting some great knowledge.

With wolverine his BNB is his infinite.

His infinite acts both as a combo and as a block string, it pushes players to the corner where they can be uncombo’d to death.

But if you’re playing on stick or without macros, then the basic BNB would be:

cr.LK , cr.MK , cr.HP , berserker barrage super

cr.LP , cr.LK , cr.MK , cr. HP , berserker barrage super

Without meter:

cr.LK , cr.MK , cr.HP, cr.HK , Berserker Slash

Without meter in corner:

cr.LK , cr.MK , cr.HP, cr.HK , super jump , lp, lk, mk, d.hk, hk, OTG uncombo (character specific)

Wolverine corner uncombo’s to the best of my knowledge:

I’ve marked the attacks you repeat in blue.

Wolverine: cr.LP , LK, MK x2 , cr.HP, MK x2, repeat/launch/super

Strider: LK , MP, MK , cr.HP, MK x2 or MK x1 , cr.HP, repeat until you can only fit in one final rep (it pushes you back), and then super to kill off the char. Should be 100%

Spiderman: LK, MKx2 , cr.HP, repeat

War Machine: LK, MKx2, cr.HP, repeat

On some of the cast (chun, megaman, captain commando, roll) the uncombo doesn’t really juggle them but there is a standing corner infinite that works on a whole lot of the cast which I will explain. Here are some uncombo’s you should experiment with the rest of the cast to learn the character specific variations.

LK, MP, MK x1 / MK x2 , cr.HP

LK, MK x1 / MK x2 , cr.HP

But on chun li, megaman, ryu, and captain commando, it may be a better decision to use the standing corner infinite:

OTG with, cr.LP

MP, Down, LP, MP, repeat

It’s necessary to cancel the mp with down so you may continue the combo before they end up landing.

On hulk the best corner combo there is on him is a relaunch. A player by the name of Stretch Armstrong is said to have been the first to find a relaunch on hulk, but when I attempted it I could not even do it once as it was too hard, I ended up developing an easier one.

The inputs are:

MP, Down, MP, MK x 2, HK

heres a video demonstrating

I’ve got a lot of negative heat for that video though because of the ending where I duo. People say " you’re stupid they can just grab you to escape the chip damage"

I did not even attempt to make the duo inescapable, in fact its so easy to do that it would be worthless to reupload the whole video just for that. I merely did the duo just to show that the chip damage from the duo WILL kill after the combo, I didn’t care about it looking perfect.

For helpers, you generally are going to want to be picking Colossus, as colossus acts as an anti air and carries opponents full screen to the corner which sets up these corner 100%'s

Psylocke also is a good choice as psylocke comes out quicker than colossus and also beats colossus, though it does not act as an anti air and carries the opponent closer to the ground.

Colossus code: lp + mp + mk + start

Psylocke code: MK + start

There are other useful assists, but I wont go into detail right now. Check out this page and experiment with all the assists if you like

http://www.gamefaqs.com/arcade/562630-marvel-vs-capcom-clash-of-super-heroes/cheats

I’ve found uses for, Lou, Magneto, Michelle Heart, Devilot, Juggernaut, Ice Man, and Shadow.

Others claim storm, anita, and a few others are useful but you basically have to see for yourself.
