Marvel nemesis 2 got rushed down. ROMed and then snapped out

i heard marvel are going to form their own developing studio and not outsource anymore.

can anyone confirm this?

I heard this for the Movies but not for games, would suck, I don’t think Marvel could make great games honestly. But who knows…

Thanks, Sano, for the reply. Good to know that aside from a few characters, I picked a solid cast for the fictitious game. Now to address your comments.

One of my goals for the Marvel cast was picking the most iconic characters. I went with Ghost Rider because he’s a recognizable Marvel character (granted his series and movie aren’t good right now). Despite his horrid status, he’d be a fun character to animate, although the motorcycle would be strictly used in intros (and maybe a super). Although now that I think about it, outside of his chain and flaming head, Ghost Rider doesn’t really have any powers, right? Well, if a character doesn’t work out in a fighting game (I have some doubts about Daredevil as well since all he has is his billy club), I could always replace that character with Deadpool (who is an SRK fan-favorite) and/or The Vision.

She-Hulk was never meant to replace The Hulk. If anything, The Thing is the one who replaces the Hulk. Capcom did a good job with their interpretation of the Hulk, but I always felt that the Hulk portrayal was better suited for Ben Grimm. Also, considering how ridiculously strong the Hulk is (especially after World War Hulk), I feel that the Hulk is better suited as the next-to-last boss of the game. I envision Marvel vs Capcom 3 as a high-res 2D fighter with 2-vs-2 or 3-vs-3 mechanics, and it’s more fitting that it takes a hero team to take down the Hulk.

Using my self-imposed character roster restrictions, I only had two spots for female Marvel characters. White Queen is popular, but aside from turning her skin into diamond, I really don’t see her as a fighter, especially since she would use her telepathic powers to defeat her opponents instead. I had Storm and Psylocke in mind for the two spots, but I really wanted to throw in a female character who wasn’t in the X-universe, and the most popular that came to mind that would fit in a cross-over fighting game was She-Hulk.

I had the male Ultron in mind when I picked him for the roster. The female form doesn’t really count because that was just an excuse for Bendis to have Frank Cho draw a naked woman in Mighty Avengers.

As for oddball characters, again I only have so many slots, so I’m giving the first dibs to the more popular characters.

As for the Capcom roster, I’m leaning towards Gene for that spot (which is why I listed him first). To answer your Bionic Commando question, white with red hair. In fact, I’ll definitely be using the classic skin if I buy both Rearmed and next-gen Bionic Commando. If I were to use Samanosuke, he would be drawn in a way that doesn’t resemble the Japanese actor–so theoretical problem solved.

I’m glad you picked Vanessa over Tessa. Tessa does deserve a spot, but animating Vanessa would be so much fun. I picked Nemesis because it would be a crime not to include at least one Resident Evil character, plus he’s a good monster foil to Venom, and the dude is tough as nails.

As for Mega Man, I’m going with X because he’s more iconic than his later revisions, but I didn’t use old-school Mega Man because he looks better in his X armor. I have no problem putting him and Sigma in the same roster. If I were to restrict characters from the same series in this game, then I wouldn’t have Spider-Man/Venom, The Thing/Doctor Doom, or even Ryu/M.Bison in this game.

Not including Chun-Li seems crazy, but there was a reason why I did it. Again, my self-imposed roster limitation left me with only two female Capcom slots. I already had two Street Fighters (Ryu, then M.Bison taking a villain slot), and I really wanted to promote the fact that this was Marvel vs. Capcom and wanted other Capcom games represented (this is why I tried to limit the number of X-characters on the Marvel side). I know some will violently disagree with me about Chun-Li’s exclusion, but I hope that these counterpoints will make up for it.

  1. You finally get a brand-new, sexy Morrigan sprite.
  2. Vanessa’s animated stance will distract you from realizing that Chun-Li is missing.

And it’s not a Capcom roster without Viewtiful Joe and Dante. 'Nuff said.

Thanks for the comments, Sano. It was fun addressing them.

Hey sure thing. Theory fighter is fun lol just run before someone makes a tier list of your characters.

Hey Cowdisease, I gave it some thought and came up with how I would handle Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I ripped off some of your ideas so feel free to hypothetically sue me lol!

I was thinking of doing something like how Marvel vs. Capcom 1 was crafted. Heroes vs. heroes added into the Onslaught Comic Book Storyline.

So I would essentially do the same, only though there is a much better comic book story where heroes faced off against heroes, called Civil War!

For those who are unfamiliar with comics (um, yeah you can read the Civil War tradepaperback at Barnes & Noble for free lol go there and come back because I am about to spoil the entire thing ha ha), in Civil War the main story was that the government started cracking down on heroes and wanted them to register with the government, tell the government their identities, become like Police Man, soldiers they could draft off to war and so on. It’s actually really complex for me to get into everything. Anyway, this really spit the super hero community. Some characters were for it and some were against it.

So what if Capcom characters existed in this world? Would they be down with this act - called Pro Registration by us comic book folk or would they be against this act, Anti Reg? So therein lies the question and the roster choices.

ANTI REG

The below are people who were against this move in the comic.

Captain America
She-Hulk
Spider-Man
Wolverine

So what 4 Capcom characters could I see being against working for the government?

Ryu - Currently travelling in the US, decides to help out some of his old friends that he met in older Capcom games.

Chun-Li - Around this time she would no longer be an agent of Interpol. I see it being very likely that she would help out her friend Ryu along with some of the other friends she met back in older Marvel games.

Dante - Um yeah the government wants him to register, impounds Devil May Cry and wants him to pay all kinds of taxes, he would definitly be against this. I’d go with his more recent Devil May Cry 4 incarnation for the game itself.

Mega Man - He protects people and being put into a situation where he has to fight in wars and travel abroad isn’t something he’s suited for. Oh and since this story would take place around 200X (Anytime between 2001 and 2009) no time travel is necessary to get Mega Man in this story because the first MM game occured in 200X. Time travel is bad, m’kay? LOL!

PRO REGISTRATION

These are characters in Marvel comics that were for the move.

Iron Man
Deadpool
Black Cat
Mister Fantastic

So what Capcom characters would be Pro Registration?

Bionic Commando - As a soldier he works for the government already so this is an easy one. I would use the version of Bionic Commando in the 3D game, much like Dante this is his most recent incarnation.

Morrigan - I honestly don’t think she would be Pro Registration, but might help out Iron Man if she felt she could have some fun. Besides a She-Hulk - Morrigan fight is too much fun to resist! Well during Civil War, Iron Man pardoned a lot of villains to help him out so long as they captured Anti Registration heroes such as Venom, the Green Goblin, etc. I’d imagine he might cut Morrigan a similar deal.

Strider - He would be Pro Registration but would have a different agenda entirely. He would be working a covert operation so he could hack Tony Stark’s files so he could find out information he has on the Grandmaster’s (boss of the first Strider game) incoming invasion that his organization is predicting. I’m going by the scenario that Strider 2 possibly laid out, that Hyru seems to be immortal, can live a very long time if he is not killed. So here I avoid Time Travel once again! Well in Strider 1 he is supposed to be the youngest Strider, so I may not get away with it… Ah alright I’ll use Time Travel man you can’t have Marvel vs. Capcom without Strider. BLASPHEMY!

Wesker - A character from Resident Evil who can actually fight! As evil as this SOB is and with all of his corporate tie ins he would be down with Pro Registration no questions asked.

And now for the fun part -

BOSSES!

For all Capcom Anti Registration characters, the final boss would be Sentry! He is the most powerful character Iron Man had on his side, the has the power of 1,000 exploding suns lol! And after you beat him during the first round, he will morph into his dark form known as the Void to further kick your butt!

For all Capcom Pro Registration characters, the final boss would be Hulk! The story of World War Hulk happens after Civil War, but essentially the heroes decided to get rid of him by sending him off to another planet. During World War Hulk he comes back really angry and decides to beat the tar out of a few Pro Reg characters like Iron Man and Reed Richards! He was stranded on Sakaar which is a War Planet, so this Hulk comes with a shield and a sword along with amazing powers, chalk full of punches that can destroy New York City!

For all Marvel Anti Registration characters, the final boss would be Nemesis of Resident Evil fame who Wesker ressurects and unleashes on the Marvel characters!

For all Marvel Pro Registration characters, the final boss would be the giant Mechanical Akuma of Cyberbots fame! He would be a massive upgrade from the Mech Gouki from Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, created by Apocalypse who is not for Registration. This is a HUGE robot, and equally shouts out Cyberbots and Street Fighter while taking things up a serious notch!

This is like MVC1 in that every team consists of two characters. So the first character you chose decides what boss you will face off against.

Like MVC1 there will be plenty of Marvel and Capcom helper characters. For helpers, I really don’t care if there are characters from the future, the past, who in no way would fit in this world, etc. They would just be for fun. There would be a heavier concentration on non X-Men characters on Marvel’s end.

All of the bosses will be unlockable as playable characters over time.

In the console version there will also be a mode where you can make any character fight any boss. Want to go cross party and have Iron Man fight Sentry, go for it!

Well this is a very rough idea and I’m not saying that it’s complete and I can probably add a lot more characters, but this is about the gist of what I would hypothetically do, using MVC1 as a model.

SANO THAT IDEA SUCKS lol! Ah well, gave it a shot… :wgrin:

I have to say, Sano, that the more I think about planting these characters into a modified Civil War story, the more it makes sense. It would perfectly explain why these heroes are beating each other up. My initial reaction to your boss picks is good. I didn’t want Hulk in the roster because I felt that he was too powerful, so your suggestion about making him a final boss is a perfect fit. I was initially skeptical about Mecha Akuma, but even that is starting to sound like a good idea.

I’ll need a few days to parse your suggestions, but I think you laid a very strong foundation for our fictitious Marvel vs Capcom 3 game.

Hey thanks!

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Civil War: WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON!

doctor octopus
sandman

more spiderman villians. They seem to be more convertable to fighting game format. imo. maybe cause they aren’t as broken as others.

this game wont happen, but if it did. Do it HD, all new sprites, 26 characters max. No story or endings just gameplay. bring back medium attacks.

you’re bored. just admit it.

Hmm Namor vs Ruby Heart… Makes me think that Ruby will lose because she falls in love with the Nam0rz.

Final Clock Tower.

Humor me. I can understand taking the extra time to create whole new sprites a la KOF12, but why 26 characters max? Why skimp out on the story or the endings? It’s not as if fighting game scenario holds up development for a significant time.

Also, this is who needs to be in MvC3: House of Civil Invasion:
Nico Minoru/Barracuda/Iron Fist/She-Hulk/Luke Cage/Deadpool/Power Pack (as one character)/Daredevil/Kingpin/Nick Fury
&
Makoto/Phoenix Wright/Garcian Smith/Leon Kennedy/Gene/Viewtiful Joe/X/Frank West/Haggar/Dante/Roll Casket/

Midbosses: Sentry, Azel or War-Hulk
Pre-final boss: Scarlet Witch
Final boss: Annihilus
Secret true final boss if you beat the game on console with no continues, lvl.9 CPU and won all your matches with supers: Dahlia Hawthorne

Instead of writing one huge post, I’m going to address your points piece by piece because I’m busy at the moment. First, I’ll address this point by saying that this is the ideal situation for Marvel vs Capcom 3.

In Marvel vs Capcom 1, Professor X plucked the Capcom heroes into the Marvel universe to help fight Onslaught. While I liked this idea, it will be much easier for MvC3 to create an alternate Marvel universe where all Capcom characters exist in it as well. It resolves trying to explain why Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Ryu, Strider, Gene, and (if she makes the roster cut) Vanessa Z. Schneider can meet each other since they theoretically exist in separate Capcom universes, and there’s no need to explain why the Capcom characters are meeting the Marvel characters. This unified universe also establishes that the previous Marvel vs Capcom games are canon, which helps feed into the stories I’m imagining for MvC3.

The concept of an alternate Marvel universe isn’t far-fetched, and previous cross-company crossovers were written with the assumption that the characters lived in the same world (see X-Men/New Teen Titans).

26 is arbitrarty I guess. They can put in as many characters as they can as long as they balance them. having 56 characters is fine, but if only 15 are playable, well, whats the point? I’d rather just see a game that has a fewer cast that has been showed care and love then a shit load that have just been ripped from obscurity and plopped into the game without any forethought on how they’d play against everyone else.

Why cut out story? Because its pointless and it takes away from what the game is really about. peer to peer competition. Never mind that any story where these two universes come together would be convuluted and straight from the bum. I guess I just ask myself “would chess be a better game if there was a story about a white army and a black army and vengence and over coming evil etc.” no, it would just cheapen it.

I like stories. thats why I watch tv shows and movies. and read comics and novels. rpgs are good ways to combine good story and good gameplay. not fightiing games.

I agree with your point that it’s better to have a smaller cast. My reasoning for picking 28 fighters was two-fold.

The smaller number of characters you have, the less complicated it is to balance the game. I ultimately came up with 28 characters because it was a nice balance between putting as many characters from both universes as possible and not inflating the cast to induce a balancing nightmare.

The other reason for the small cast is that I envision Marvel vs Capcom 3 as a 2D HD fighter with old-school style Disney animation. It would cost too much money to apply 1080p Third Strike-style animation to 50+ fighters, so keeping the cast under 30 makes the cost a little more manageable.

However, I will disagree with you about story. Yes, gameplay is king and Marvel vs Capcom 3 would ultimately be a failure if it wasn’t a good fighting game, but that’s no reason to completely disregard writing a good story. I would argue that having a decent or good story will enhance the game, at least for the single-player mode.

A dream match scenario will never hurt a game, but one of the things that made the early KOF games so memorable was that there was a good story with the Orochi Saga. The Tekken games had those rendered endings, giving people an incentive to beat the game with every character. Writing a story for each character in MvC3 will motivate both casual and competitive gamers to play through the single-player mode with every character, and I feel that enhances the value of the game.

If MvC3 gets made, I tell ya who’s in it. Sonic and Solid Snake, DUH.

If I had to predict which CAPCOM characters would appear, I’d guess Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Phoenix Wright, and some guys from Street Fighter 3/4.

To hell with balance. I never was a competitive MvC player and I never will be. Break 100 characters, CAPCOM! On second thought, just give us a 25% increase in roster and give us interesting new systems. I’m not asking for Guilty Gear here, just some innovation and changes.

I’m glad that Marvel finally realized that EA have their heads up many unpleasant orifices, and their games do not market Marvel well at all. I think that MvC3 would sell tremendously well, given the popularity of even shitty licensed games, and the fact that CAPCOM has some serious rep with gamers. SFIV won’t draw in the casuals, but MvC3 sure would.

100+ chars? No.

FUCK NO.

I see. I forgot that if we were to get an MvC3, it’s likely that we’d get new 3D models (as opposed to HD sprites), which means we’re not getting a hundred characters. I still think you can have a roster of about 30 characters and still keep the cast relatively balanced.

This I don’t understand though. Why does story take away from fighting games, but music doesn’t? What about backgrounds and artwork? Would you seriously consider playing a fighting game with only one background, no music, and the GUI at the bare minimum (we’re talking SF2 healthbars and that tiny super meter). Every game has to try its best to please the player on every level. Otherwise, fighting games would go back to only pandering to a very niche group of competitive players.

You want the game to have high res sprites because you want the game to look good. But how is that condusive to competitive play? It isn’t. People still play Super Turbo to this day, and it looks primitive, albeit colorful. But a fighting game’s graphics, music, and yes, story, give it a flavor of its own to attract outside a wider audience.

Shit, I only play Tekken for its awesomely ridiculous plot anyway.

I honestly don’t see any point in removing storyline since in these games all you get from them are endings, and the people who don’t care about them will just run out of the arcade after they beat the game and not watch them, like I’ve seen happen more times than I can count, even with brand new games.

And in the case of MSH vs. SF, there’s a lot of joke endings in there too so prolly doesn’t matter for non-sensical characters like Phoenix Wright, for example. “I proved Annihilus is guilty so he’s going to jail! TAKE THAT!”

I don’t think storyline will effect roster choices either. Venom and War Machine had no part whatsoever in the Onslaught Storyline, Capcom tossed them in anyway. Seems from the get-go characters come first and everything else is thought of later.

I’ll sign on to no endings if the cast is massive like MVC2, one big generic ending wouldn’t bother me. However if it’s around the 20-30 range some kind of endings would be nice, even if it is just a little blurb like everyone got in CVS2.

Oh yeah, if Anakaris happens to make the cut, please oh PLEASE have actual Sabaki Transformations and not just have everyone turn into a voodoo doll! Doctor Doom turns to H.E.R.B.I.E., Spider-Man turns to Spider-Ham, Captain America becomes Bucky, Wolverine turns to the X-Baby Wolverine, Hulk turns into Norimaro wearing David Bruce Banner’s clothes, etc.

Ditto if Demitri gets in with the Midnight Bliss. :lovin:

I can’t wait for further news. Come on, CAPCOM! We need MvC3! I’m sure CAPCOM knows that the license could be what they need to revive their 2D fighting franchises. SFIV + MvC3 + SFHD + KoF XII + BlazBlue + AH2 + MB: AA + SC4 = Best year for fighting gamers EVER!

Alright Sano, I’m unfortunately still swamped with work, but I haven’t forget about this idea we’ve been kicking around for Marvel vs Capcom 3. Here are some background stories for the villains. Let me know what you think.

Regarding the cast, although the main Civil War story is about heroes beating up other heroes, I still think the villains should play a role in this game. To justify the villains’ inclusion into the cast, some concurrent storylines have to run with the main Civil War battle.

M. Bison - Bison was believed to be dead after Shadaloo’s fall thanks to the joint efforts of the U.S. Army, Interpol, Delta Red, the Avengers, and the X-Men. Years of inactivity by Bison and Shadaloo seem to confirm the rumors of his death, but in the midst of the superhero Civil War, Bison appears to have resurfaced. No one knows why, but at least one person intends to find out…

Magneto - Guile and Chun Li aren’t the only ones who have a vendetta against Bison. While Shadaloo was active, Bison successfully attacked Genosha and kidnapped a majority of its mutants inhabitants, using them as guinea pigs from his inhumane experiments. A majority of those captives were killed, which incensed Magneto as a modern-day mutant holocaust was occurring under his watch. Magneto played a key role in Shadaloo’s downfall, and was more than happy when Bison was believed to be killed. Magneto has no interest in the superhero Civil War, but Bison’s mysterious resurrection has forced him to act and get involved.

Sigma - Sano, I know you hate time travel, but it adequately fits here. Sigma has declared war on the humans and is tired of constantly being foiled by his arch-nemesis, Mega Man X. Unable to defeat X in the Marvel/Capcom future, Sigma decides to travel back in time and destroy the humans in the past with his superior future technology. He learns that, in the past, Apocalypse created one of the most feared cybernetic fighters ever existed, Cyber-Akuma. Sigma intends to find the defeated remains of Cyber-Akuma and implement stolen Cyberbots technology to create Mecha-Akuma and finish off the humans.

Sigma choses to arrive during the superhero Civil War, as the heroes will be too busy beating each other up to notice his arrival. This plot could explain why the other future Capcom characters (Mega Man X, Captain Commando, Strider, Vanessa if she makes the cut) have appeared during the Civil War (stopping Sigma is one of the many reasons). The future Capcom heroes aren’t the only ones who are aware of Sigma’s arrival.

Ultron - Ultron is on a quest to either eliminate human life or convert it to mechanical forms, so it’s no surprise that another humanoid suddenly appearing from the future who is also bent on destroying the humans has caught his attention. However, Ultron has no intention of teaming up with Sigma to destroy the humans. Instead, he wants to assimilate Sigma’s future technology into his own and become the ultimate robot. With this power, Ultron will finally be able to defeat the Avengers, the one group that has always stopped him from destroying mankind.

Doctor Doom - Doom actually has two dogs in this fight. The first is the arrival of Sigma from the future. Doom, bent on world domination, has also realized that Sigma has arrived from the future, and believes that Sigma’s future technology could aid his quest for world domination. The second is Jedah’s mysterious appearance. Doom is also involved in the mystic arts, and is constantly butting heads with Jedah regarding the demon world. Unfortunately…

Jedah - I still haven’t come up with a good reason why Jedah gets involved, or why Doctor Doom fights Jedah. Whatever the reason for Jedah’s involvement, it has to be good enough that it also gets Dante and possibly Gene involved. Sano, I’m not familiar with the Devil May Cry and God Hand mythos, so perhaps you (or someone else) can come up with ideas that can intertwine the DMC and God Hand stories with Jedah.

Venom - Tony Stark and Reed Richards are frustrated that they are unable to stop the superheroes who oppose the Superhuman Registration Act, so they resort to recruiting controllable supervillains to bring in the superheroes, since the supervillains are best equipped to fighting superheroes. One of those controllable supervillains is Venom. The other is…

Nemesis - Wesker proposes to Tony Stark that he can reanimate the body of Nemesis, and along with Richard’s controllable nanobots, use Nemesis as a fearsome weapon to stop and contain the rebelling superheroes. Stark is absolutely desperate to resolve the Civil War any way he can, so he reluctantly accepts Wesker’s offer. Nemesis joins the Civil War fight, supposedly under Wesker’s control.

That’s it for now. I have background stories for the twenty heroes, but I’ll save those for a future post. Let me know what you think so far, Sano.
