(Rock, I’m pretty sure angelpalm’s comment was about the unintentional “White Power” in “White Power Man” and not the “Power Man” in. When I read Pterodyactl’s post, my mind first went to a superpowered Klansman too just because “White” was capitalized even though I knew what he was getting at.
That said, an actual superpowered Klansman would be kinda redundant with all the Nazi supervillains and faux-racist [or even outright racist], anti-mutant supervillains running around in Marvel already.)
Meh. I’m kinda luke(cage)warm to this too like the female Thor thing, but this makes (way) more sense than female Thor (currently) makes really. As a bunch of people have already said, The Falcon’s long been established as Cap’s sidekick until they brought Bucky back as the Winter Soldier and then, briefly, as Captain America. So this is really just the logical conclusion of that with Bucky (temporarily) gone again. The only other (black) male choice would be Patriot and even though Patriot exists, he’s still too young, especially when no one really ages in comic book land unless somehow horrible shit happens to them (that doesn’t permanently kill them); his grandfather, Isaiah, is too old.
I guess you could make the case for Nick Fury Jr. being a viable candidate for the new Captain America, but he’s just been introduced into the main universe relatively recently, so that would be a bit much. Maybe Marvel actually learned not shill new S.H.I.E.L.D. people too hard after we got stuck with the thunderkunt version of Maria Hill in the forefront for so long.
That said, does Marvel and, subsequently, its fans need to make such a big deal about a black Captain America? No.
Are they going to the sake of trying to transparently boost sales with “shock value” and mostly racist ire? Unfortunately, yes.
Granted, I see this as Marvel also smartly trying to take advantage of the fact that movie Sam Wilson from the recent Captain America: Winter Soldier is probably like…literally at least thousand times more popular than comic book version. “Shock value” is still a unfortunate part of it though; otherwise they wouldn’t be emphasis he’s black since we can fucking see that. It’s not like he’s (poor) Mettle from Avengers Academy who you had to be told was black (and Jewish) because he unfortunately looked like Red Skull Jr.
The main reason, besides not reading Marvel anymore, that I couldn’t really much less is because I think they could have been genuinely “ballsy” if they wanted to go the “shock value” route while still (unfortunately) emphasizing race yet being logical and just made Photon into the new Captain America. I mean, part of the running joke of the unexpectedly popular Nextwave was her constantly saying how she led the Avengers (for six issues). So why not try to run that in a (slightly) more serious capacity even if it means passing over Sam…again?
Well, other than giving half of the already flagging fanbase a literal heart attack by Captain America not only becoming black (gasp!) but also a woman (no!).
I’m not sure what’s most ironic about this image: That Loki doesn’t want to wear something that’s basically like he wore as female Loki anyway, that Thor is currently being replaced (temporarily) by a woman or that Tony somehow still thinks he’s the manliest despite having the skimpiest outfit.
