[Mar 2, 2012] FINAL ROUND XV apart of the Evolution 2k12 "PITSTOP" Road to EVO (Atlanta, GA)

Several pools and tourneys the TO let players pick where they were in the tournament. Happened in the ST tourney, Marvel pools, and sounds like 3S, too.

Mexiwont, who ran your 3s pool? I know you were in the AE pool that I ran later in the day. If you know who ran your pool, please let me know.

Also, I really have to stress this, if there is a problem then we need to know about it RIGHT THEN AND THERE. Every year we hear about things after the fact and it’s frustrating because we don’t want people to come to Final Round and have a shitty time because of how we’re doing things. Our intention is never to have you show up and get DQ’d. So on behalf of the entire staff, I apologize that you had that happen. Who did you speak to about this, Loyalsol?

I DQ’d a few “top players” because they weren’t around, so I can’t speak on why that wouldn’t have happened else where.

First I would like to thank larry for running final round XV while at the sametime dealing with his mom passing away…i couldnt of done that man props to you…

Second - I am missing my ps2 controller along with my pelican ps2/ps3 converter . Last time i had it was at the soul calibur setup near the stream. it was a guy who i let use it who didnt give it back the only way i can identify him is he has a light skinned girlfriend who was really cute and she played natsu…if anybody can get in contact with him or them about my pad please send me a PM.

Third about the brackets…i was in pool 14 and i ended up having to run my own pool…and honesty i thought this was not cool…I was running my own pool, playing my matches in SC5 (got blown up) and had to play my matches in AE as well. When my AE match finally came up my SC5 match came up and they tried to DQ me when i went to the command table and told them what was going on before they even started my match. My teammate weapons left ended up having to pull a loud speaker out of one of the pool runners hands to let them know i was in a match and to not DQ me…and that messed with me mentally to the point i couldn’t focus on my match.

Now the whole DQ’ing people thing is great and all and i was happy that people were taking no prisoners (including top players) but it was one person who i felt shouldn’t of got DQ’d and that’s wolfkrone…When i got down there to watch the top 32 matches they were just finishing up casuals before they started the bracket. I sat there and watch as the one judge kept calling other matches before he called up krone up for his…When he threaten to DQ him i overheard certain top players cheer and say things that they hope he got DQ…hell i even overheard someone call him Hollywood too. i say they waited a good ten minutes before they tried to DQ him the first time. I got on my cell and called him but he did have a cell number and i didnt know his room number…20 minutes later He got DQ’d…

When i asked him where was he he told me that he was told by a judge that top 32 will start at 12pm When top 32 started at 9:30…he was pissed and that’s why you guys saw how he just went ape shit on everybody in that damn bracket.

but overall i had a blast wish i could come to more majors and hang with the big doggs again lol.

Before this thread gets to negitive just know that this overall was an awesome experiance, yes it ran long on saturday but after the huge turnout last year who whould have thought this shit would have DOUBLED IN SIZE!!

Great sponsors, Markman was cool as shit, Duckie ran an awesome station, and overall this went off with everyone having a great time.

Here is what went right
Huge turnout, great sponsors, great matches, great hype, everything finished on time sunday, great competition, COOL PEOPLE ALL AROUND!

Here is what went wrong
Not posting brackets of soul calibur online(felt so sorry for Josh on this one as people had to bug the shit out of him to keep from getting DQed.)
Ran late on saturday(again expected with this many people.)
DQ’s

There where errors and some unfortunate events but with a tournament doubling you have to right this off to growing pains.

On one note i did complain about this in person but Andre that ran one of the Marvel brackets was as unproffessional as it was possible to get.
when the bracket started at 10pm most of us where tired and wanted to get this overwith as soon as possible, so when it started we where all really ready to go. Andre started the matches and they Kyah came by and took his megaphone, this slowed things down but then I agreed to go help him track down a new one, which evetually would happen but it of course delayed the touranament further. After getting one match started he leaves to go watch the marvel tournament on the stream, after 15 minutes of no one playing on our station i track him down and tell him the station has had no one on it for 15 minutes he replies oh shit and runs back over. He puts one more on the station and then leaves again, he gets back 15 minutes later again and puts then for the next 20 minutes everything runs smoothly. But then it gets to his match and he stops the tournament again so he can run his match on stream, which again leaves our station with no one on it for 15 minutes. To make a long story short by 1 oclock he is into the second round of losers in a 32 man bracket. 3 hours after the start of the thing.

Now i have ran tournamets before and i know it is a thankless Job but his behavor was horrible, he was more interested in hanging with his friends and watching the stage than doing his job. I was in pool 15 if that helps.

Now after my Rant, I need to say shout outs to Larry man sorry again about your Mom. You have done so much for us and believe me when i say the FGC loves you and hope you and your family can make it though this. You where stronger this weekend than i could ever hope to have been, dont ever change.

AND ALSO FUCK WHO EVER STOLE SHIT FROM LARRY. Everyone that was there if you hear anything about this please let someone know.

Cross-post from MeltyBread on the Melty turnout.

To the American Melty Blood Community:

For those who did not know who I was or didn’t know who was running your bracket until now, I apologize if I haven’t introduced myself to you before. I was that black guy standing on chairs screaming into megaphones for names. My name is SilentShinobi and I have been running brackets for Melty Blood at FR for all the 4 years it was there. I am also an activist for this game and has pretty much had a hand in most of the Melty festivities this past weekend. I would like to say first and foremost that I do appreciate everyone’s attendance at Final Round this year. Final Round has always been a community driven tournament series and I am no exception to giving credit to the community for doing what it can to make it.

With a hoarse voice and alot on my mind after this weekend known as the 15th anniversary of Final Round, I have to congratulate you guys for breaking barriers just like we have 2 years ago. Numbers wise, this has turned into the biggest EC Melty Blood tournament in the history of the game in America; exceeding NEC '09 which was the first PS2 Actress Again major. It is also the 2nd biggest tournament only being overshadowed by Evo 2010. Region wise, we had participants from over 20 states and expanding 5 countries which turns FR into a very diverse tournament filled with people from all over the world who love the game. Skill wise, runbacks were ran back and has shown to become the tournament that Japan’s supremacy over America was halted. From strong OG players such as Pfhor, Choco, and Voomer to the East Coast’s rising stars within LordKnight, Ehrik, and FRXV champion Tonberry. From West Coast finest HF-Blade, Numakie, and Bellreisa to Japan’s very own Garu, Chelsea, and even the Marvel champion Kusoru. To top it off from a stream monster’s perspective, we broke 2200+ simultaneous viewers by the start of Grand Finals Sunday morning. A show to behold indeed.

How could this have happened?

As I said before, this entire operation was community driven. From the promotion to JP and beyond of FR to the setups you played on. This is what Final Round was all about, and it was because of ShinBlanka that we were able to expose this to a point where we couldn’t have done it all alone. The only people I can think of that could something as crazy as this is you, and only you. In my eyes, this community has definitely made a way out of no way and shown only a small percentage of what you guys are capable of. I’ve talked to many of you over the weekend and you all were pretty much satisfied and amazed at what this entire tournament ended up becoming. I do appreciate the words that will forever be remembered from this weekend and won’t take them for granted at all.

We have done well for Final Round and words cannot express what I saw develop over the weekend. I am honestly impressed and show praise to you lot. If you weren’t here, you definitely missed out.

Consider this a milestone in all things Melty Blood in America; a milestone that was only possible by the community themselves.

As a tournament organizer, this has been an experience and a real endurance test for me. Never have I done a bracket of this amount by myself. To finish off 73 players to a final 8 in the time frame that I’ve done it was a real accomplishment and I hope to do this again in the near future. I do appreciate everyone for being prompt to their matches even though the setups themselves were not labeled. You got to know your opponent and were able to communicate with me about the status of your matches. Even though then my voice wasn’t at its best, some of you lent your voices to me. Even though I was away from the bracket to tend to other announcements and my own tournament matches, some of you protected my bracket and kept it up to date. Thank you.

As a player, I feel as though I have not given myself completely to most of you eager to play me. I’ve only played 3 sets this entire weekend, not including my tourney matches. To be honest, it comes with the territory of being an organizer. The ability to weigh the importance of both shows responsibility to what you must attend to. Unfortunately, most of my time this weekend was being spent away from playing the game. Whether it be by ballroom setting up, organizing tournament, ripping and running to have it run smoothly, finishing up grad schoolwork, sleep catchup, or just downtime to chill and not just play. In conclusion, I do sincerely apologize that I said I was going to play you, but ended up not doing so over the weekend. Like I said before, the load of being an organizer to the load of advancing my skill was only showing me what needed to be done over the weekend in order for everyone else to have a good time.

Do I regret it? To be honest, I don’t. Because I will always be at a tournament I won’t have to be held down to just organize. =P

I am glad to had met some old faces I haven’t seen since the very first Melty Blood tournament here at Final Round, to Evolution, and over the years around the country. If my time in the game cannot excuse my absence from the game, my conversation with you all definitely brings me back to the reason why I play this game in the first place. Unfortunately, the next few months will be very hard to ensure any time solidified in the game. As I’ve already told most of you, I am graduating on the 15th and I have to focus on a college graduate mindset afterwards. This doesn’t mean I’m quitting, but I am definitely on an advancement hiatus for awhile until I get my life straight. I’m sure most of you do post-college grads know what I’m talking about.

Where you go from Final Round is up to you. All I’m trying to sum up is that you all have done much this weekend to show how much you care about the game. I assure you, your hard work has not gone in vain and hollow ground. You have exposed this game once again successfully. Do not let go of this chance you have!

  • Until Next Stage.

FlashG was running it with help from a couple other guys. I don’t recall who it was that Floe gave money to, I’m pretty sure it was one of the other dudes but it might’ve been Flash. It was a little hectic but I definitely saw money exchange hands, I was standing right next to them when it happened.

As far as the AE pool, I’m not trying to call you out on that, just saying it seemed a bit unfair to wait for Strider as long as you did when you didn’t wait for another guy as long before DQing him. There has to be rules concerning the time limits before DQing and they have to be enforced for everyone right away or else no one is going to take them seriously. If they’re not gonna be enforced on everyone equally then it’s going to continue being an issue.

I didn’t know who to speak to. By the time I found out I was DQed they were already done running losers finals in KOF and the pool manager was gone.

The problem was that I repeatedly told my pool runners (I was in AE pool 13 and KOF pool 5) that I am playing both games and I am constantly being called back and forth. I was litterally being called from on stage in the middle of matches and being told I have 2 minutes to show up or get DQed. I had to keep asking people to go up and tell them I am playing one game or the other.

Then finally it happened when it took a while to get through AE and that was when they finally DQed me in KOF because I took too long. To be honest I was more worried about getting DQed in SF4 because of how long KOF matches take and SF4 was my main game.

I was in the venue doing exactly what I was being told to do and finally I couldn’t satisfy both managers. There is literally nothing more I could do besides complain to people and at that point I was so tired of dealing with it I just accepted it and stuck to AE till I lost in pool finals.

The rest of the weekend was great, but sorry to say Saturday was not a good experience for me.

Also shout out to the one honda player who waited til TWO SETS to go complain to a judge that it was not on 2012…my boy was pissed he had to replay those matches lol

I hate to hear about that, Mexiwont. Last time I went, I noticed several well known players having at-length discussion with tourney organizers standing at boards. Pointing here and there on the brackets. Organizers would change names around to where they would point to. Just those times when you say, “If I walked up to this person running my tourney and made a suggestion to shuffle certain players around, would he listen to me?”.

My only beef with that is if you’re a top player you shouldn’t give a shit who you have to fight: friend or not. Bulldoze them and keep it moving. There has to be some type of seeding system that does not involve players playing in the tourney helping make the decisions. Instant DQ to any non tourney organizer attempting to buy in, alter, negotiate, or second guess tourney organizer decisions. If anything, that shit should be insulting to the tourney organizers. But this will always be an issue. I know you personally, Mexi, so it sucks to hear you got screwed like that.

And that IS getting screwed. You’re right, it’s not about the fact you lost, it’s about the fact that someone flaunted celebrity and money, hopped in, beat you, then basically shitted on you by just leaving the tourney. I mean, if you’re still in Mobile, you traveled 6+ hours to participate in a game you’re very passionate about to get shitted on when you were expecting to go in and have a good time and play by the rules like all others.

The FGC is a great thing but sometimes it’s a joke.

Wait, Strider who? I didn’t DQ ANYBODY in your AE pool because they weren’t around. I only DQ’d three people in the entire tournament, and two were people who had friends tell me they were out.

Wait, are you talking about 801 Strider? The wait was because he was waiting to play his match on Stream, and the stream line was like a 30 minute wait. He was the first person I sent up there to play, and when I realized it was taking so long, I ended up sending the next streaming match up a half an hour early so it wouldn’t interfere with how the pool was run.

I won’t DQ anybody for quite some time. When I ran the pools my time limit was 20 minutes because I can always run other matches. It’s not fair of me to DQ somebody two minutes after I call them. That’s fucked up. Nobody wants to pay a bunch of money to come to our tournament and get kicked out of the brackets unless they’re an idiot or an asshole. I don’t like DQing people at all, and I know how to run the FUCK out of a bracket, so DQing is always a last resort.

Matter of fact, unless I’m confusing you, and you weren’t in pool 2, pool 2 was the only pool that basically finished on time.

I’d really like to know who FloE gave money to. This is a huge issue to me. I don’t give preferential treatment to any players. It’s not fair to have somebody waltz in super late and be all hollywood and shit. I don’t play that shit.

Yes 801 Strider, and yes I was in pool 2. And you DQd Arthur’s 2nd round match at the same time we were waiting for Strider…and when I asked him where he was he said he was eating, not playing on the stream like you said. In fact, he was called over the loud speaker 3 or 4 times, along with the other guy, and you DQd the other guy and not Strider, who showed up 5 minutes after. I was there when you DQd the guy, so unless you unDQd him or had someone filling in for you at the time it definitely happened. Either way, not sore over it, just an observation.

I don’t remember for sure who it was. Talk to Flash about who was helping him and who let Floe in the bracket, I’m sure you’ll get to the bottom of it.

RPD, yeah, shitty situation indeed. I’m actually living in San Antonio TX now so I’m a bit farther away. Good to see you’re still around the scene.

that was so fun.

SOOOO I got a chance to interview some of the big names in the FGC last weekend at final round. I kept things light and just talked about their placing in the tournaments they entered, their thoughts on SfxT, and whether or not they like what MLG is doing with all of these new events.

The first batch of interviews are up now, and I got a chance to talk to Seth Killian, UltraChen, Arturo, Nerdjosh, iPeru, Skisonic, Sherryjenix, Scott Popular, Markman, and Clockwork. The second batch will include Spooky, Yipes, Noel Brown, and a few others.

The playlist can be found here:

Also I’ll embed a few of the better interviews after the spoiler:

I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous talking to Seth Killian and a few others but I tried to keep things laid back and let the guys talk about whatever was on their mind at the time.

Hope you guys like it

Arthur played his matches though. I don’t think he got DQ’d. I DQ’d somebody named Kurasama, and Noel Brown. And Strider was sent to the stream. If they told him there was a wait and he left then that was on the folks running the stream. I didn’t even know who Strider was until somebody came over and said he was decent. I think the only “Name” in your pool was Noel.

I’ll get BobSMack to pull the bracket just to be sure.

I don’t remember the name of the guy, might’ve been kurasama. But yeah, I was saying you DQd Arthur’s opponent, who was Noel Brown, not Arthur himself, in response to you saying you didn’t DQ anyone in the pool.

Either way man, this point has run its course. I don’t know all of the details surrounding all of this stuff, just stating what I saw and that it seemed inconsistent. With everything going on that day it wouldn’t surprise me if someone fed Strider wrong info and he took off. The bigger issue was the Floe thing and that needed to be brought to someone’s attention.

I also noticed something like this in my Marvel pool.

I looked at it at around 1 in the AM on Friday night (Saturday morning) and I had one well known player (Alex Valle) in there.

The next day, when my pool was scheduled to start, Noel Brown was magically at the bottom of my (very weak, as far as well known players go) pool.

I don’t know if this was just a fuck up on the part of the the guys running the site, or just possibly something with the brackets and having 400 people, but it did seem a bit suspicious/disappointing to me.

Other than that, good ass tournament. I was hype about all the new stuff that’s happened since last year (Host of online game show finale, several arcade machines of a game that’s not out in the US on free play, NOS, etc.). Feels like the community has grown so much in the last year, and using Final Round as a judge, I like the way it’s going. Next year, you guys will be ready to accommodate the hugeness that is bound to be FRXVI

With over 250+ people for SC and 400+ for MvC and SF, it’s pretty difficult to keep track of everybody when they’re playing in different games. I recall waiting well over an hour for Kensou to finish up at KoF despite telling him to come to SC5 immediately after his match was done in KoF. We had twice as many people as had shown last year. Even with the chaos, this was by far the best Final Round that I have been a part of and cannot wait to see how big we do it next year

Also, not DQing “known” players immediately is nothing new, and with more and more sponsorship money becoming involved it definitely shouldn’t be unexpected. I don’t think anybody would DQ Justin Wong after 2 minutes if he showed up to one of their locals and was in the bathroom for 10 minutes when his match came up. This isn’t to say that people are “buying” their way as somebody insinuated earlier, but business decisions have to be made while also being fair towards everybody else (hence the Wolfkrone DQ and many others).

Much love for all that showed!

as far as brackets go…I wasnt having any of that no showing stuff or being late…despite setbacks we where understaffed but everyone put in hard work (to those that didnt ead…im dead serious) to make the magic happen…at the end of the day I could barely walk but it was a good accomplishment type of pain.saying that the event “was poorly ran” is one of the dumbest things I have heard this month…making due with what you have and adjusting to a situation shows strong character and commitment…I know certain things where not to some people’s favor but one could use this experience to make an even better event and thats ok…

oh and about players buying their way into brackets…wtf…

BRACKET FAVORITIZM FOR TOP PLAYERS IS NOT A PRACTICE OF FR! To create a fair tournament I apoligize if anything happen that I wasn’t aware of in that manner. Just because someone is a top player shouldn’t be the reason they get an extra chance. As organizers we have to think up a better way to get people in their pools for their matches. I’m already thinking of new ways to achieve a better balance of brackets for players that play in multiple games over the weekend. Sorry if people weekend was ruined over piss poor management. That fall apon my shoulders.
