Exactly, self defense classes teach you nothing about how to deal with it when it comes by surprise. Really, the best way to train people in self defense is to go above and beyond just teaching them the techniques, it’d be to use some form of surprise in classes to train them to use it when they aren’t expecting it instead of panicking.
Example:
Class is stretching before training, instructor comes up behind somebody randomly with a fake gun/knife or bare hands, whatever, so that they can see how that person reacts to it. Also, they wouldn’t be able to get higher level belts without being adequately skilled at dealing with the element of surprise.

Sure, remember 2 years back when that Canadian guy got on a Greyhound and beheaded a fellow Canadian for absolutely no reason.
Even this is not enough, you need to be psychologically in the method of training. Things like verbally abuse, really get into your face, threat of pain, fatigue, training full power. It’s this type of pressure that will teach you what works and what doesn’t, and help the maind make those split second decisions that could save your life.

Actually, he did it WAY wrong. He just went across the front of the throat. You want to make a diagonal slash, not across the front of the throat, but- wait, why am I telling people this shit?? Whatever- but just to the right of the center of the throat, diagonally up toward the ear, past the point of the jaw, (making sure you get nice and deep at the point of the jaw, btw. You want to cut deepest at the area where you take a pulse by hand to sever the carotid artery), making the cut end just below the ear on the right side of your target’s head. You could probably go straight for the right side of the neck and cut it if you had a good amount of momentum and a sharp enough knife, if you wanna play slash ‘n’ dash/blood tag.
why didn’t he use the guy as a shield after slicing his throat? they do it all the time in movies
