Makoto Strategy and Match-ups

Most giefs i play go for st.mp OS lp SPD after EX GH. If you try to jump/standblock or do a special move, st.mp puts you in block/hitstun. If you crouch and the st.mp wiffs, spd comes out. JBF sounds like a bad idea to me unless ex karakusa grabs him out of st.mp

I have to look at the replay to see which chicken wing he was doing, but I did try crouch tech, as it went over my head and hit me crossed up. Back dash also didn’t work (it hit me during my recovery frames). c.LP+LK+HK seems like it will beat that stupid gimmick though, so I thank you!

Can’t wait to find him again to try it out.

Also, met another Dan player. c.LP+LK+MK worked wonders. This made the match up so much easier!

And grab me i presume? Even if a cancle the focus on the first frame (thats possible right?) its still 1 frame i am grabbable. And a “meaty” spd after ex greenhand is not hard. I guess i still should use focus backdash now and then for the free meter and preventing optionselects.

I saw a clip on youtube showing mp/fp fukiage being airborne, but tried it myself just now and it does not look like it. I guess they removed it inn AE. That would have been sweet to mash after EX GH. If he SPD your would probably recover faster than him, and if he does a poke you would just air reset to a safe distance.

Akuma, Seth, Blanka are kinda tough for me guys …i got pounded by a really good Abel player too … im really having a hard time getting down the situations for all matchups … theres some set ups that i may be lacking… anyone willing to train with me to help me out a bit ? i finally got a headset if that will help… Mossad hit me up! Yomi too!!! and any other Mak players on Live or PSN lol just hit me up so i know what system to get on plz :smiley:

Actually I had been looking for a comic of Makoto, and it was the first thing on the page. I wanted to do somthing like D3V’s Chun li arcade stick art here:

I’m using that template, but the only think i’m actually keeping is the header with the character name (gonna change the color and probably add a gradient from left to right) and the cutout… man that cutout looks sick. I love how he has the comic art cut out. The template itself is great to work with, But its dificult to get it transferred. My stick is almost done though! Its coming together very nicely. I think I will use your avatar, but i’ll make a few changes to it. I’m going to probably make it greyscale, change it to HD and enlarge it with 50% opacity in the background… Maybe…I dont’ know. Still brainstorming. I’ll be printing in about 2 days so I need to hurry up lol.

Yeah my avatar will work perfect if you put it on the left side like in these comic types of templates , I wish I could make myself one of those but i’m too scrubby with editing and painting/drawing/etc. and i dont know … I wanted to copy someone’s stick but I dont know how to get the right size and print it out … nor do i know how to open my stick up or what paper should i get for it … or how to laminate( or whatever the word was) it … way too complicated for me :[ there was a guy called izanagisama who did a great job on his stick and i wanted to copy it , but he couldnt help me out so now I dont know what to do :frowning:

What kind of stick do you have? Really all you need to replace the art is, well, new art that is sized correctly. I can do that for you if you show me the art you want. I mean if you wanted something custom i couldnt’ really help lol. I’m still learning, If you go to the General thread under the New Stick Artwork thread, there are about 1,000 guys in there doing stick art. That’s where I’m learning.

But yeah once you have your art, i think its best to just order the print and the new panel from Art’s Hobbies. Otherwise there will be a lot of guesswork, especially when it comes to cutting. They will do everything though. They even have installation guides on their site.

Well, I might be able to help a little with those having trouble with Abel, since I just got a ton of information for my Makoto from you guys :D.

As Zakbg said, keeping it random is very difficult for Abel to deal with. Since he has to guess an ex roll to escape and I honestly don’t think ex roll is good against Makoto because of how quickly she covers distance. When you are point blank, st. mp all day. It will decimate a lot of what Abel wants to do. I wouldn’t even try and mess around with him at step kick range, because that’s how I catch most Makoto players.

When he does step kick, I would suggest trying ex karakusa at least once. That gets me every time I fight a Makoto. Backdash and jump back fierce are also really good for Makoto to escape step kick with. Abel has to take a little bigger risks in losing pressure if he trys to read you then you do just escaping You can even focus his step kick and catch him for trying it. That is really demoralizing for the Abel player. Focus in general is pretty good against Abel since his armor breaker is punishable and not the most useful of Abel’s moves.

The most important tool I think Makoto has over Abel is her axe kick. This really beats Abel down on defense. He doesn’t have a lot to deal with it besides maybe guessing an ex falling sky, but most of the time it’s a bad risk. It’s just like Abel has a hard time dealing with chicken wing up close. He just has to block and hope to create a little space for him to get out with, which you should try not to give.

This is especially a match up where pushing Abel to the corner is amazing. Most of the time Abel isn’t so bad in the corner, but against Makoto its almost impossible to survive. Between karakusa, axe kick, and st.mp it’s really hard to get out without just throwing out a random ex roll. Since Abel’s backdash is pretty garbage and his only escape gets beat by one of Makoto’s main tools it shouldn’t be so bad. Abel can definitely maul Makoto a little bit though. I usually just fish for step kick all day and try and force the first knockdown, because after that the match might be over for either character.

Edit: I just read the first page matchup advice against Abel, and the part about his crouching fierce is actually untrue now. It’s anti air properties aren’t really strong anymore, so it doesn’t work. Closer jump ins are now really bad for Abel. His most reliable anti air is almost the exact same as Makoto’s cr.mk. That’s not saying Abel has bad anti air options, but I feel safer jumping in on Abel that almost anyone else.

Makoto vs Dudley

Ultra of choice: Depends
Ultra 1, Punishes blocked combos, can be linked and combo’d into from EX karakusa when caught in block strings.

Ultra 2 - Good escape and good in anti dp/backdash OS. (Dudley cant OS Ultra while U2 is available)

Tips dealing with Dudley’s pressure
.

  • Dudley uses Ultra 1 vs Makoto and has many ways to OS backdashes with it. Focus backdash or EX Karakusa is Makoto’s best defense in this match up.

  • Dudley’s Duck Upper juggle safe jump is easy to focus backdash. Cant not be Ultra’d, EX Karakusa’d or Fukiage’d

Dudley’s main pressure vs Makoto is in safe jumps when she has meter/ultra and is midscreen. He’s always OSing backdash and EX Oroshi with LP MGB Midscreen and LP Jet upper in the corner.

  • Dudley’s jump HK has barely any block stun and has an odd amount of pushback on block/hit. If hit near the top of the head Karakusa will grab anything besides jet upper/jump/ssb

Short Swing Blow

  • short swing blow is a problem for makoto because it’s safe on block and beats her backdash/Ultra 1, karakusa and late crouch tech on reversal. knowing Dudley uses SSB in the same situations Makoto uses Tsrugi. Knowing this Makoto can either go for a Tsurugi or a f.MP (counterhit) into ultra or sweep.
    (there’s also focus vs SSB. Not recommended when Dudley has super or EX Meter.)

Pressuring Dudley

  • Using Tsurugi and f.MP in blockstrings blows up Dudley and catches his backdash (jump forward Tsurugi).

  • After LP MGB on block Tsurugi will catch SSB, backdash and sometimes c.LP

  • EX Tsurugi vs Ultra 2 Dudley beats Anti air Ultra (if done within range of ultra 2 or to stall and punish an early ultra 2 anti air)

Footsies vs Dudley

IMO Makoto’s best poke vs Dudley sweep since her c.MP can be hit by s.HK (Dont want to make it a match of c.MP vs s.HK since s.HK is used as a counter poke and will win most of the time.)

React to Dudley’s s.HP and f.HP with c.MP xx EX/MP Hayate
React to Dudley’s c.HK whiffs with EX Hayate Ultra 2 and Dash > EX Karakusa.

TL;DR
Gotta rush Dudley down before he rushes you down.
Really hard to get him off of you when he has Ultra 1.

How do you guys handle the footsies aspect against Cammy? c.MP seems to stink in general against several key mid-range moves due to various factors. It seems like f+MP, c.LK, and possibly f+LK for traveling to beat random SAs are the best bet.

s.MP works like a charm. If you’re keeping your distance, use s.HK FTW. But i have yet to see a cammy stand at s.MP max range and not try to get in.

I think for you guys that might be old news , but ill just throw it out there to let people who dont know , Guy has absolutely NO wake up game against makoto , if you do ex oroshi on his wake-up he whiffs his ex tatsu thingy … i just tried it out in a real match just to try it out cause this guy was tatsu happy and his tatsu whiffed and i directly ultrad him lol
