Makoto Strategy and Match-ups

[media=youtube]8kih6kTuHig[/media] CW seems to be workin Guile pretty hard in some of these matches if you ask me. I wouldn’t write off his opinions on the match up so dismissively.

It is still in Guile’s favor if you ask me, though.

I’m going to have to keep this in mind. I’m really struggling to mount an offense against this guy without getting overwhelmed by his own.

Then go play a good one that adapts fast and knows the matchup by heart and you will change your outlook on this matchup. Unfortunately for me, the West Coast happens to be full of them.

Edit: OK, I just saw the vid linked in the previous post and it pretty much confirms that it looks like you and the Guile player are still trying to learn the matchup. The Guile player is playing the matchup completely wrong (and is still winning anyway) and is taking a bunch of unnecessary risks, which is the only chance Makoto has in the Guile fight. And it looks like you guessed right a couple of times with Tsurugis over his Booms, but the Guile players I’ve played either don’t throw Booms out at that range, or will condition you to try guess Tsurugis so you eat Flash Kicks for free.

I’d go into more, but I just realized that this is online so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt on the matchup.

So her only answer to breathless at a range where she cant jump over forwards seems to be jump back xx super/u2 (aimed at hitting where he starts breathless). Ex tsurugi cant hit for two hits cause he ducks first hit (not that it was viable at the correct range anyways). So… thats pretty bad lol? Any other ideas? Mp fukiage still gets thrown if she xxs straight into it on land, as does back dash and jump back again…

I stand about a halfstep away from him while he’s knocked down and low FK Tsurugi. It beats back dash, TT, and U2. Unless of course you get auto corrected then you’re dead :frowning:

Im thinking for where he sets up breathless when you can’t jump him, jump back buffer u1 or u2 for land (on reaction to him letting go of breathless) could work, and if he doesnt try to get your landing jumping back or back dashing again… But it might be too quick to react too, unsure gotta test. The prob with jumping back is for 4f you are stuck there and cant back dash or jump again for 4f, but you can xx into special or ultra. So buffering ultra for these vulnerable 4f seems like her only option (if its even viable…).

just mix your karakusa game and you’ll be fine…just make sure u land them first…TAKE A LOOK AT THE FIRST MATCH, SECOND ROUND…AN IDEA OF HOW THE KARAKUSA SHOULD BE USE…WORKS ON MOST CHARACTER

Alright in the corner against Balrog/Rufus after s.FP xx EX Hayate, f.lk reset

c.lp meaty beats everything Rufus can do. If he EX Messiah’s you block it.

For Balrog it beats everything but EX Dash Straight, Upper whiffs, and you get hit by Ultra.

If you’re in a positon where you can’t jump out of it, backdash then jump backwards.

Ok makotos only way to get a guaranteed punish on breathless is to empty jump into abels face and ultra 1 on land. You have to hit the ultra on the first landing frame though (and make sure you dont whiff an air normal at all or you will be eating breathless). Jump back u2 he can still go underneath if you do hk version or wait and punish your short u2 if you go a light version and it whiffs. But jump into his face and u1 he cant escape lol. A little risky, but not with the technique below. If he throws it out and you’re close, empty jump u1 on land so he cant escape.

Edit- after more testing im sure she can do ultra 1 breathless guaranteed punish, after empty jump into his face. This seems to be her only guaranteed punish of breathless. I would use negative edge to make sure no air normals come out during your air time, so during the ultra flash hold 3p, and during your jump buffer and let go JUST BEFORE YOU LAND, this will guarantee u1 comes out on the first landing frame and no air normals come out (which make you vulnerable to breathless). So this is how to beat breathless i think, and it lets us use u1 in the matchup woot!

She can also jump back xx super on land and it will avoid breathless. I would negative edge for this like ultra 1 to make sure super comes out on the first possible frame.

Makoto meaty cr mk at closest range will also make ex messiah whiff over the top of her on hit. Something else to consider using i guess.

For fei long meaty cr mk ducks reversal chickenwing, if its non ex f + fp punish, for ex f + hk punish. Also in general vs fei long can lvl 1 fa rekka first hit and if he tries to hit second rekka fa lvl 1 ch crumple (this is not makoto vs fei long specific i just wasnt aware you could do this until last night lol). Also st hk does well vs rekka pressure. And you can reversal u1 a mispaced blocked rekka 2nd hit. And st mp does well to deter chicken wing approaches.

Also you can fukiage CW’s on reaction.

Sigh, no offense guys, but we are spending WAY too much time on Abel Breathless. I’ll add mine if you don’t have ultra. EX axe kick will slow your fall and you dodge it as they release and go under you.

Now, back to other things. Post landing a Karakusa, Fierce XX Fierce or strong charge 2 hayate into fist of a SRK. What are your options afterwards? SRK seems to beat everything. What are your options after the hayate? I even tried hayate focus cancel to narrow down the frames. If I do that, it’s down to them jump/backdash/SRK or block/attack/throw. Karakusa beats the block/attack/throw. But I don’t got an answer to the jump/backdash/SRK, ESPECIALLY backdash. I’m tring to make it a 50/50 option, but I’m being forced to into these 34/33/33 games which are never good for Makoto.

Blocking with Makoto is an option, you know. If they backdash, react with the appropriate response (sweep for some characters with fast backdashes, f+FP for characters with larger and slower backdashes). If they jump, depending on where they jump, anti-air Fukiage/standing normal/jumping attack. If they SRK, punish on the way down. If they FADC it, take appropriate response to what they do after the FADC. At the end, at least you made them waste 2 stocks if they did SRK FADC.

Dude he can still wait till after you come down and nail you…

Not sure if this was posted/discovered already, but:

Against Bison (Dictator,) if he’s pressuring you with cr.LK xx LK Scissors, rinse/repeat, you can use st.HK to completely beat his cr.LK. If he decides to do cr.MP xx LK Scissors instead, Reversal HK Karakusa will grab him, provided he was close enough after the LK Scissors.

vs abel:
I tried target combo LK~MK, but id doesnt work (he goes under LK. LOL).

I remember a thing i did once (but VERY risky. lol). I was midscreen away, and already avoided his ultra2 with jump EX tsurugi. The second time he did it, i was SURE he would wait. So, when i saw breathless, i just dash-in -> ultra1 in his face. It was amazing. hahaha.

Ok, then. Against rufus, i tried some things in training mode:

*After EX messiah kick (guard):

  • (back or forward) jump beat every followup (delayed LK, HK, nothing), except MK version…but he cannot hit you when you land
  • stMK/MP/HP beats everything, except delay LK-followup

*After a dive kick:

  • crMK option select techthrow, as we already know (1LP+LK+MK)
  • after guard, just do down/back -> up/back+LK+LP+HP. Down/back will make you guard any crLK after dive kick. Up/back+LK+LP+HP will techthrow (on the last frames available) or back jump HP if he tries another dive kick.

*you can guard EX messiah after a meaty crLK/LP

*makoto will go under the last hit of EX messiah if she blocks low and is super close to rufus

*you can throw rufus tornado if he does (on your guard) stHP -> tornado

*tsurugi MK will crossup (hit) rufus in the corner with good timing. (for exemple: EX hayate -> crLK (whiff) -> MK tsurugi…crossup if rufus quick recovery)

Against Boxer (dont remember if i’ve already posted it):
EX oroshi -> FAlvl3 on wakup

  • cannot jump
  • cannot EX dash punch
  • cannot EX headbutt (makoto goes under xD and she can punish)
  • can ultra
  • can super
  • can LP headbutt
  • can backdash
