really? It seems very impractical to catch any of those things with ultra 2.
You can catch all that crap with Ultra 2 but in all reality Ultra 1 is the best option in a Makoto mirror match.
Makoto’s wake up options are actually so shitty that nearly every set up should work if they don’t DWU. No invincible DP means Makoto is the least scariest character in the game on wake up. She’s so fucking free it’s hilarious. We should all know that! Her only invincible reversal, hilariously given the conversation, is U1, which is 6 frames, which is safe jumpable as all hell. EDIT: Not to mention that all level 1 Hayates are punishable with reversal U1 on block with the right spacing.
Lv1 LP Hayate: -8 on block
Lv1 MP Hayate: -7 on block
Lv1 HP Hayate: -6 on block
EX Hayate: -4 on block (Don’t U1 this one)
Makoto has all the tools available to her to kick her own ass and then some. It is literally the most honest match up in the game.
Running Ultra 2 is just giving yourself an extra challenge.
U2 worked really well in the AE mirror match because it caught back dash and punished IATs. It also worked great for getting out of the corner, where Makoto really shines. The only reason to use it in the Ultra mirror is for a beefy red focus combo.
what should makoto do about air to ground command grabs? Is it just a matter of dashing and praying?
Wait, are you talking about people that can only do the input for SPDs while they’re jumping? If so, those people are super easy to spot and even easier to deal with. Every time they jump at you and don’t hit a button, you can automatically assume that they’re churning butter midair and will SPD as soon as they hit the ground. It’s easy to either anti-air or neutral jump/backdash in place and get a full punish once they whiff.
No, I mean like Fuerte, Guy, Gouken, and Akuma, who can grab you while they are in the air and you are on the ground (air to ground).
To my knowledge its just a matter of dashing and praying, if they’re predictable you can stuff them with a nj.HP or j.MP.
Do not try to air-to-air Guy’s Bushin Flip. You’ll get grabbed for a fifth of your life bar. Your best bet is to either c.MK or Fukiage. Makoto vs. Guy is a reaction game where it is necessary to pick the correct AA between LP Fukiage, MP Fukiage, and c.MK. The Makoto player has to pick the right answer against variable timing elbow drops and the throw.
You need a read or a guess against Akuma’s throw, rather than a reaction. Back dash, jump, U1… all lose to the other options of the dive or to an option select off a whiffed dive kick.
Gouken’s flip is a terrible version of Akuma’s. As long as the dive kick isn’t meaty, c.MK wipes all options. You can risk a Fukiage against non-meaty flip, but the parry absorbs it and allows enough time for back throw > U1.
Fuerte’s can be Fukiage’d if it’s not meaty, and it requires a very fast reaction time. IAT will punish it, but loses to splash.

You can punish any blocked move with LK - LP Hayate… which you could red focus.
If he uses his two hit combo into shoulder you can sweep him after you block it. His two hit into shoulder combo isnt a tue block string.
Standing RH is great for footsies.
His best combo means he has to jump in on you with RH into Bushin Chain but you can MP Fuki into Kara FP Fuki into Ex Hayate.
Once he is in the corner he is toast.
Oroshi to build meter and make him mad. If he finishes his combo with slide and you block it you can punish.
On his wakeup bait ex tatsu and punish.
Empty jump and ex karakusa if he has no meter on wakeup and Ultra 1 him.
