Makoto Strategy and Match-ups

just as a note,

mp fukiage will only hit a bad kunai. Ibuki should be throwing kunai as a reaction to your delayed get up, which will not get hit by fuki.
You can also focus xx forward dash under bad kunais and get back to neutral.

In general, you need to learn to block ibuki to win that match, it’s a bad one.

ibuki’s delayed wakeup setups, off throw, mk tsurugi, neckbreaker, and sweep, most of the time hit one way or the other, and are hard to make ambiguous.

To be honest from that clip, it seems that the ibuki was a bit too high when she threw the knife. I used to use mp fukiage to drop the combo but all that leads to is ibuki using knifeless setups.

I rather them using kunai setups than those insanely hard to block jump LK bullshit.

How do you guys approach the yang and rose matchup?

Very carefully.

All I know about Yang is that he has the ability to punish nearly anything Makoto does on block during footsies with his 3-frame cr.LK into Rekkas. The thing to remember is that he’s a glass cannon. Two combos and he’s stunned/dead. Play a really patient footsies game until he has to do something risky to open you up, then take advantage of it. The second Rekka at the very least is -5 on block, the third is -8. This means you can punish sloppy Rekka pressure with f.LP > EX Fukiage then go ham on him. His DP is 5 frames so safe jump the hell out of it and punish.

As for Rose, fuck Rose. I also want to know what you can do against her. cl.MK and her backdash just take a dump all over Makoto. I’m sure someone will say to option select her backdash but dammit I swear it has to be frame perfect because she recovers so damn fast. I feel like you just have to hard read what she’ll do on wake up. Meaty throw set ups will grab her right out of EX Spiral, but will lose to cl.MK (since it’s airborne) and will whiff if she backdashes. I haven’t tried it but I feel like cr.LP > s.LP OS f.MK would be too slow and she could block it, but you could get a tick Karakusa out of it if you have the meter for it. nj.HK OS U1/U2 are too slow, she’ll recover before either of them hits. We’re talking about a character whose backdash is so fast that she can focus attack the first part of an EX Hado from Ryu, backdash, then block the second part of the EX Hado. Why is that allowed to be a thing?

I’m just theorycrafting/ranting at this point. I hate Rose. I hate that Day-1 Roses can get so much mileage out of her because of how good her tools are. Up in her business? Soul Satellite stops you dead cold. Not a fan of Ultras that bring the entire round to a dead stop.

Just want to reinforce the tip for fighting Dictator, since it’s been working lately:

Staying close right through his abuse.K range, which makes him decide between producing a charge and abuse.K, or his crappy normals. Standing and forward MP are so great to kick things off (I usually go for frametraps, but you fancy seasoned Makoto’s have endless possibilities) Meanwhile you score some hit/blockstun with normals, conditioning, and more. If just this forces Dictator to “play creative”, usually translates to punishable stuff. Sometimes he even gives up abuse.K which opens up Tsurugi

Thanks for the input what really kills me about yang is just his walkspeed. I have to do a better job when i’m at neutral with yang.

Rose is favored, but the match is winnable with hard reads and good punishes. Rose’s normals are generally better, but have clear answers that require guesses and reads to overcome. Rose’s pokes are easier to stuff than whiff punish, although this opens you up to getting whiff punished yourself since you’re hitting s.MP on a guess to beat her s.HK and t.HK. Rose c.MK slides under your s.MP, but loses to IAT and preemptive c.MP. Focus dash toward works against all the heavy pokes, but Rose recovers at about the same time from a c.MK if focused so maybe just try for a 50/50 throw/IAT setup after the dash.

Against Rose, OS safe jumps with LP Hayate to catch backdashes (loses to EX Soul Spiral). Punish EX Soul Spiral with t.LP xx EX Fukiage. Rose is very vulnerable to cross up/same side walk mixups after Fukiage because she can’t mash a wiggle DP. Plink Tsurugi beats c.HP AAs, but it can probably be played around other ways. The threat of Karakusa is strong in the corner since EX Soul Spiral gets choked, so just wait or regular throw, then Fukiage the jump or punish the backdash. EX Oroshi beats the airborne MK, but obviously loses to throw. If Rose is backdashing a lot during neutral game, then start dashing toward and nabbing her with Karakusa. Remember that c.MP xx Soul Spiral is not a solid block string.

Although I feel either ultra is viable in this fight, U2 may be more viable if the Rose player is content with activating orbs from full screen and chucking fireballs for 15 seconds.

Thanks Shocky

You think Dictator was bad? Try fighting VS Adon/Cody! LOL

The Cody match-up is similar to how you would handle the Dudley match-up, that being learning to block, also remember that Cody’s normals are insanely safe on block and only react to a blocked criminal upper if you aren’t pushed too far away. His unsafe moves are all of the ruffian kicks and all of the zonks. You are most likely going to be blocking a lot and looking for openings in his pressure.

For the Adon match-up I’m not really too versed in it as there aren’t that many Adon players on steam, although I do know that lk and mk jaguar kicks can only be punished by a throw and hk can be punished by s.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk or fwd.lp. His EX jaguar kick is safe on block. Adon’s jaguar tooths look unsafe but only EX and lk are unsafe, if you are anticipating a jaguar tooth it is better to stuff it with j.mp or if you want more damage then go for a lk tsurugi into whatever. But be aware that Adon can easily bait your preemptive stuff with a lk jaguar tooth into a punish of his own. My bad if this info seems to be non-straight forward but Adon is a rare match-up.

EX Fuki catch Rose’s backdash, it’s a good option for OS’ing it.
Also, I usually go for Heavy IAT, because of its lower hitbox, makes it easier to catch her slide. I’ve had her slide under MK axekick intro throw way too often.

I also use W Ultra in this matchup. Her fireballs have awful recovery if whatever Rose decides they want to use fireballs against Makoto, and it’s a good tool to escape the corner when they have the Orbs.
Focus dashing through her farHK is a hard but rewarding read. Be careful with kara axekick to beat her crHP, it hits high and if they catch you doing it too often, they can just EX Soul throw.

Oh also, against Adon, stMK is an amazing poke, because it will beat him out of his jump if he tries to instant Jaguar kick.
Also, Haitani showed back in 2013 that stuffing Adon out of his stHK with stMP is definitely doable.

How can we tell if Bison’s done Devils Reverse or Head Stomp? It normally takes me too long to figure what he’s done to have an appropriate counter ready.

You can’t, you usually have to guess. A few options counter both, like dashing below it. ( or walking below it if you’re not Makoto )

If I remember right, Bison gets meter from stomp as soon as he leaves the ground. He gets meter from Devil’s Reverse after the punch follow up, not on start up.

I’ve had luck mixing in neutral jumps against Adon and Cody, right outside their poke range. Cody’s so eager to push buttons and use frame traps, that your jump makes him think about how to better punish you (and he lays off the buttons a bit so you have a chance). It also makes Adon work harder for spacing. I think you should do it only enough to get (and keep) the point across

Sigh… it’s hard finding inspiration on youtube these days. These USF4 Makoto vids are just hard to watch compared to SSF4/AE

Heed my warning. Decapre is child of El Fuerte and Cammy. She has good options to knock you down if your not careful. She has good pokes, a pain in a fking a GTFO moves, a good reversal with a quick charge, her options with scramble is nearly unlimited when your knocked down, she STILL got her CS divekick and even her basic combos only do 300 dmg (believe me I seen it). And don’t get me started on her U1. Seems to me we may have a birth of a new bad matchup.

If Decapre does U1 right on top of you as you wake up, reversal Seichusen Godanzuki will beat it if they mess up and do it late (edited in light of Veserius’ additional input). The invincibility on start up will get you through the ball and the recovery on her U1 is so long that you’ll whack her in the arm for a full animation. Hell you could do the same thing with reversal Abare Tosanami because of the projectile invincibility.

I still say El Fuerte is more annoying because of Q Bomb.

That isn’t true actually.

U1 Total Starup+Recovery = 35f

Her b.throw, slide, air throw, and sweep all knock down a minimum of 42f

She’d only get hit for hitting a button.

Math is hard though
