It’s not really a 50/50 because you can react to the cross-up. Either block it like a champion or U2 your way out. Makoto’s U2 is definitely viable in this match up to catch teleports, Devil’s Reverse shenanigans, and whiffed EX Psycho Crushers (not blocked ones).
Sounds like an armor cancel on wake up. Motion is just ex kara then u2 really fast. There might be a way to shortcut it, but I haven’t heard of one yet. I can’t do it reliably personally. I saw it for the first time in one of vryu’s vids where he armor cancelled into u1 to punish a divekick setup from yun.
With some experience this matchup becomes more easy. Even st.hk is good against any danku,don’t do it on reaction just wait until start,but stay at gadouken range. St.hk stuff gadoukens too on their startup before the the release.
It’s just a timing matter,danku’s startup is slow iirc,it’s the traveling speed the main problem at first. If you feel high,you can also go for a LP fukiage if Dan loves to do a Danku point blank,but is risky if he don’t.
i do qcf>hcb kk>qcf kkk. takes a bit of practice and i still can’t get it 100% yet. imo its worth it though cause it essentially kills pressure from the air for her. comes in handy under certain situations against other characters too.

@Noocta versus dan is like the versus ORO in 3.3 : crMK all day, and stMK the rest of the day : will prevent him from approaching too much, will stuff the dankou clean : )
Dash > tsurugi is very good too as dan’s crLK take so much time that you will hit him.
fHP > HP is good against backdash
I’m having a really hard time against the gief match-up. I feel like I’m just playing rps half the time and trying to not stay too close. What should I be doing?
Forward HP, crHK are good long range pokes.
Heavy Axekick over his head on wake up beat Lariat, but he can SPD it on landing if he blocks standing.
Don’t hesitate to grab in that match up. Gief can look very scary but it’s not a reason to stop going forward for grab when you feel like you got him blocking.
ok, so with gief you gotta be really selective with your pokes! you have to know at what range to use which pokes more so for him than any other character. for ex., cr hk is really good in this match up as it beats a few of his grounded normals with long start up, lariat and jump ins, but the distance is important. when you see lariat, you can literally dash up and cr hk from the right distance. it’s nice that this move is gonna deal more stun in ultra 4!
also, cr mk, st mk for anti air is good but learn the right range to punish.
be careful with yamase because gief can punish you hard if timed poorly, but I usually use it while he is walking forward to catch him off guard occasionally.
to be honest, tsurigi I’d use sparingly like noocta said, it is punishable by spd. use mostly on inexperienced giefs.
no random ex hayate, it will get punished on block!
also, jump back hp works well up close. I believe there are a few setups to get it to hit overhead?
finally, I like ultra 2 in this match up to punish lariat. be careful about using it to get out of the corner vs gief, his large size makes it difficult to not hit him and therefore you may not get out of the corner.
@gen instant overhead setup : backthrow > backdash > forward dash > jump back HP
Use the stMK to beat his stMP poke (and buffer an ex hayate (or hayate) to send him into the corner)
I usually go for lp or ex hayate enders in the MU since, IIRC, gief can punish HP and sometimes MP hayate on hit with SPD. I don’t think LP hayate is SPD punishable though.
