When Abel has no meter and does a (blocked) step kick/ fwd + MK, mash cr.lp. There’s nothing he can do to beat that, only his EX command grab is hit-invincible, at the most you will eat a regular throw which is fine. Your normals are better than his all day, he cant jump at you; makoto can always AA him.
I remember Air (the ryu player) said something very true “always do something vs Abel” when put in mixups situations, never stay still, make him doubt.
F LP is better. Do f.LPx2 then sweep to get him off. or f.LP, Kara normal throw

Your goal is to get in. When he’s far away and throws Air Slashers, he can AA most of your jumps over the slashers. You need to know the right distance to jump. Then mix it up with Tsurugi over the slasher / simple jump over / FA dash. Or just FA backdash until you have U2 at which point you have an advantage over his fireball tactic. But be careful: his Air Slashers recover pretty fast so you either have to have a very good reaction or predict a fireball correctly. EX Slashers are ultraeable on reaction pretty easily. It’s okay to take some damage if in the end you’re right in his face. His slide works as an AA. Try to predict his slides and FA his ass. Some of his specials have low invulnerability so be careful with cr.LK and cr.HP. s.MP/MK/HK stuffs most of his stuff pretty convincingly. cr.MK beats his Knee Drop pressure. But it can get stuffed if you’re too slow. EX and HK Rolling Sobats can be punished by s.MK xx … HK Sobat requires pretty strict timing and you can punish it only if it hasn’t been spaced to be safe. EX MGU can be also punished by s.MK most of the time
If he tries to pressure you by doing a blockstring then jumping over with a crossup make him regret with Fukiage combos. (DJ I play often did that all the time until I started saying “NO” to that bullshit).
On his wakeup, meaty cr.MK beats everything except U2. And you can combo it into s.MP/MK if it was done meaty enough. Also do not try to cross him up, his upkicks beat every crossup attempt. They also whiff on sitting opponents IIRC.
I actually have a completely different approach, lol. I try to be patient against him. If DeeJay stays away and just throws air slahers, I stay on my side of the screen spamming oroshi and I can build meter faster than him. I try to make him to come towards me instead of the other way around.
Like what rzn says, one knockdown and you have great advantage, so I try to find that one chance without being too aggressive. If he comes towards me, it is easier for me to get that knockdown.
Just went a minor set with the first truly competent Yang I’ve fought. Won 4-2, but …
I’m pretty confident Yang is more annoying to fight than Yun. Dealing with 3 frame long range lights into Slashes into Ultra and resets, and a poke greater than Makoto’s c.MP into his shit, and a DP, and the standard dive kick pressure … fuck that shit, man. The worst part for me is that Yang gives much less incentive than Yun does to wait for the dive kick and s.LP with his footsies; in fact I think Yang wins the poke war.
All I’ve got is c.LK is the only buffer poke worth a damn unless the Yang like s.HK/s.HP (s.MP then), and standard Twin dive kick AAs (s.LK TC, c.MK, s.LP) are in order.
Anything to fuck with his wake-up? I know his backdash is trash, I’ve got that covered. I’m more concerned with his LK DK. I’m pretty sure s.MP and maybe others will beat it if you meaty the air in front of Yang, but that’s a terrible strategy, you might as well just block and punish.
I’ve been getting f+MK punished by Abel against whiffed normals a bit. Not every time by any means, but roughly 30% of the time, enough to make me consider discussing this.
Pretty much all of Makoto’s mid-height pokes beat Abel’s s.LK and f+MK, the issue is f+MK is essentially a 7 frame Rekka that can if you’re unlucky turn Makoto’s buffer pokes into a 300 damage combo against her, into Abel’s oki. I think I’m switching to s.LP xx EX Hayate as my buffer poke of choice against him. I think I need to use this normal more in general outside of AAs and chains, there’s a fantastic hit-box on the bugger.
Anything else in the footsie battle? I’ve been using c.HK ever since I saw Mok11bk spam that shit, and it actually is a great footsie tool due to Abel’s big-ass hit-box and low-priority pokes.
On a side note, I think the s.LK, s.MK TC buff in 2012 will be a pretty big buff in terms of dealing with Rekka pressure, much like how TC is more consistent than other pokes against the twins’ dive kicks.
Well, to be fair it can be a completely ambiguous setup off sweep with them taking a step forward, a true 50/50 that will at worst do very good chip damage and will at best land full ultra. It is a lot like Guile players doing distanced Sonic Hurricanes just for chip on some characters wakeup. not optimal but good enough.
I play a good Yang pretty often and even though there is a skill gap shit is bad. Plus if you land a backthrow yang has the option of utilizing the inv glitch which can fuck up a ton of setups. Yang wins the poke war but fishing for c.mp os will make him wary. His resets are scary, especially off of launcher since he can choose his side based on if he crouches or stands. The yang player told me that the best met for Makoto is play him solid on dive kicks and then once he is convinced to stay grounded start “poking” with n.tsurugis, as he has very little answer to those. I will see if he will play my scrub ass a set and if I can post videos.

If you use 39 frames, it would be a 4F safe move. 38 frames would be 5F safe move. For example after backthrow -> MP (20F) = 59-20=39, 4F safe move.
