[MAJOR] CANADA CUP 2012 | Oct 26-28 | Calgary AB | International 5-on-5 $5,000 Pot

The 3 day thing is understandable… but why not plan out the International 5v5 for the Friday and have the main tourney on Saturday as with previous years? These guys are flying in already and wouldn’t be working on Friday anyway.

I know a fair number of people who can’t make it / don’t want to sacrifice a couple hundred dollars to miss work on Friday to attend.

That right, but we know even more people that can’t watch the stream giving us a loss of viewership. We may consider side games Friday morning and the more popular games when people don’t work. Don’t worry we are looking for the best possible scenario. One thing for sure is no one wants to miss the 5 v 5.

Lap

The 5v5 could be run Friday afternoon or evening where viewership would still be high. It is a closed event with only a few teams so this kind of event shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours. This would leave all of Saturday and Sunday for all of the other tournaments that are open to everybody.

But it is your tournament in the end. I just can’t imagine that dedicated UMvC3, KoF and other side game players are very happy to be pushed to early Friday, forced to miss work on Friday and on top of all of this, pay $50 to help subsidize players for a game that they don’t play and have no interest in.

The 5on5 is the main event and the main draw of The Canada Cup, and also the biggest time eater. We definitely won’t be finishing it in one day, and we certainly won’t be ending the event with anything but the 5on5 grand finals. It’s the biggest thing on our fight card and I don’t think anyone can argue that.

The fact remains, this is a 3 day event. We haven’t come close to finalizing a schedule because there’s still a lot of variables to plan for. The more players a tournament gets, the more time we have to give it to ensure it gets done on time. It doesn’t mean other games get the shaft, but it means they may get less stations or run alongside another game. Or, alternatively if there’s a ton of enrollment the game will have to be the only thing running.

I think adding 2000 to the pot is a step in the right direction? instead of flying so many people out, make the prize money irresistible? idk

no way man. the 5v5 took FOREVER to run last year with just 8 teams. its not a single elim sideshow tourney like most team tournies are at other majors… with 16 teams in, its going to take a ton of time to play through

Lap Chi/Canada Cup…

On teams…

Any chance you can get Dominican Republic as a team? Those guys just dominated Video X Games (blasting Mike Ross, Combofiend, Sanford Kelly and iPeru and everyone else in SF4 and their MK9 player beating the EVO world champ Perfect Legend) and it being a 3rd world country, and the pure hype they had at Video X Games I think it would be really nice to get a team like them go up against the very best. They could be a nice Cinderella, underdog team. After all, Dominican Republic? Who’s heard of them other than DR Ray placing 9th EVO 2011? (=^.^=)

China of course is a team that should be considered! They obviously have had a nice showing at Shadowloo and EVO.

Kuwait is another team! Not as unknown as the Dominican Republic as they have shown themselves at SBO some time now and with Daigo visiting them. Would be cool to have them!

I think these 3 teams are 3 teams that you should really strongly considered. I know you want star power and a team like Dominican Republic and Kuwait may not have that but it would be a stinker if a country with 2 teams get a pass. There are other countries I know you have in mind to come that I would wager wouldn’t beat team Dom Rep or Kuwait (I would guess out of these 3 China would be the one you want the most so won’t mention them).

I’m guessing from last year that didn’t go China and AU are the one you want to come. One may also guess you might have sponsored team (like eLIVE Pro last year). I really hope you give Dom. Rep. and Kuwait a chance. I know while I was watching the Video X Games those Dominicans were hype and they were calling out Canada Cup saying they’re ready for any team that would be at Canada Cup.

There are also other teams out there that people haven’t heard about. Like Chile is one. So is Brasil and other South American countries. There’s also Puerto Rico. Also Switzerland. Many more! This game is so world wide! You can have a Team Peru with iPeru, Alex Valle and fill in the gaps with strong Peruvian players. Or a team “South America” or team “Central America” for solid players in Costa Rica and Hondarus (there are a couple of good players there). Though out of all the “not too known” countries, Kuwait (though it’s known) and Dom. Rep. might be the strongest. This is just speculation from what I’ve seen. Only one way to find out!

Canada Cup has so much potential! Do hope you guys show EVERY SINGLE 5v5 match up on main stream like you did last year. Hope you fix the set up for the 5v5 (instead of watching the team sit on the floor). Hope Canadian crowd can get a little bit more hype than they were last year (but as seen at Video X Games, you don’t need the crowd to get hype just the team itself).

Also hope you guys can, on the road to Canada Cup 2012, you get more intimate with the teams. Last year the only obvious things I saw was the trailer with the captains talking and the 3 captains that were on Cross Counter. Maybe have a more intimate video interviews in a “Meet team xx” where they talk about their team, SFIV, their chances, their lifem etc. Maybe you can make it a sort of requirement for teams to send you or get volunteers from their own community to do this? That could be a nice video you can post to hype up Canada Cup and add some substance to the teams we’re not familiar with so we can maybe have more connection to them.

For Marvel: I still contend that the best way (and at the moment maybe only way) way to build up international Marvel away from the USA domination is to get KuSORU involved. Getting KuSORU involved (and maybe Rei-Chan, two of the best in Japan) may be the only real way to put in some doubt that any tournament USA will be in will be “free.” There are others out there in the world that are good, but KuSORU is the one scar that currently remains.

Canada Cup has the chance to be the best tournament of the 2nd half of the year! Hope the best for you guys!

I Think South American Needs some Love in this Tournament.

You guys should be thankful that you have such a great tournament. Instead of complaining that it’s too expensive or that your game isn’t getting spotlight, or that your favorite player won’t be around, you should be grateful that there is a group of people that is willing to do the effort of putting this together for all of you, down here we don’t have anything like this, and 99% of the TOs will just try to profit as much as they can with every tournament. If I had money or lived close (close as in either Canada or the US), I’d go to CC by any means possible, so you guys should do everything you can to support this. But I also have a drive that most of you don’t, and I live in a different reality. I guess it just makes me mad to see some people wasting golden opportunities such as this, and instead just complain.

Lap Chi, please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help promote CC, even though I’m at the other side of the world, I’ll help with everything I can.

Doesn’t Brazil hold large tournies?

They do, but they happen once in a blue moon, they’re nowhere as big as North American majors, and for us going to Brazil is barely any cheaper than booking to go the States/Canada with anticipation.

Putting on a regular tournament of this size is already like planing a couple of weddings, but the country vs country has got to be the most difficult thing to coordinate. Thanks for the help and understanding! Maybe you can help us with some $8.95 subscriptions lol.

Last year I was rooting for Zzangmoo78 but I suspect this year they have a lot better options to go to. One of the Korean guy I was wanting to see last year and thought would have been a better choice than one of the “unknown 3” and hope to see this year is Kimlegend. Though Laugh would likely know a lot more than me, Kimlegend has at least been putting up results with qualifying for the LG Cup and his team getting into the SBO Qual finals just losing to Poongko’s team.

For team Japan would be nice to see other people along the usual suspects like Amiyu (doubtful) and KojiKOG. Though I guess those would be online fan picks really (though Amiyu currently is the only Japanese player to have at least 4 character in the Japanese BP top 10).

If Canada Cup really is expanding to 16 teams instead of 8 I suspect away with team Europe and have Team UK, Team France, etc despite it being easier to fill in last minute cancels. I would speculate that some of the teams that were at WGC’s 5v5 would want to come to Canada Cup.

my personal choice for any japanese killer would be YHC-Mochi. I’d like to see him fight infiltrations hakan. that would be truly intense.

IMO a dream team 1 and 2 for japan would be

Team 1 Sako, Uryu, Haitani, Momochi, Shungoku Neurosis
Team 2 Daigo, Mago, Tokido, Bonchan, Kazunoko

imo
Daigo, Sako, Momochi, Shungoku Neurosis, Naruo

would be amazing if Naruo came down  nudge nudge
