Thanks for the explanation, I appreciate your honesty on this. I’ve been to the first two Canada Cups and had a great time. I don’t mind paying a bit extra for CC.
But, I think you should know that there are a fair number of people out there (non-SF players mainly) who don’t find there to be extra value in paying the high fee to help subsidize international SF4 players. Running pools on a Friday also makes things a lot more expensive for those of us who work Monday-Friday. These are the main two roadblocks I’ve been having with getting people to attend this year’s CC.
I know a lot of people are a little gun shy at $50 but there is TONS of overhead to cover running an event this size, forget the 5 on 5 and you still have an event that costs 1000’s and 1000’s just to get rolling, from venue costs to pot bonus’ to the secret killer of every tournament organizer’s wallets: DLC and game discs. Growing events have growing costs, its the nature of these things. We’re trying to keep a price that is fair to both you guys the players and doesn’t kill us either.
Trust me gang, we’re not looking to line pockets here. But we do need to break even this year.
Well we changed spectators from full price ($40) last year to $25 this year, its really hard to say. We are bringing in super hot cos-players! I think one is named Dannie Riel.
U guys should do something special for marvel as well to attract more people, and would probably get t
Ur attendance up. I know this is mainly an AE event but having something for marvel wouldn’t hurt (IMO)
We’ve got plans to for Marvel and KOF this year. They’re still in the lab getting some spit and polish before we announce anything. We haven’t forgotten about you non-AE folks.
Obviously you guys aren’t making money, but invariably comparisons will be made between majors. Evo is a $50 venue fee. It is the world’s premiere tournament. People will always see that price and compare the event with Evo.
Unfortunately everything is more expensive in Canada.
It would be nice to have joker rdk quan and nick down for this event. Then maybe snafoo, chi and who ever is the better sf players out east oh and blitz man of course =p
I would love to have all the money matches that take place in the MM room and on the side stations recorded by someone. As someone who loves watching high-level play, there’s a lot of it that goes on at events like this that could be recorded and put up for public consumption. Forget the catered food and stuff, THIS is something I would pay for.
Last year the Qanba guys recorded all their footage and uploaded it to Youtube… something like 8-9 hours a day in huge bulk. This was awesome and amazing, because I got to watch like 2 hours of Momochi’s Cody play casuals and I learned so much from it. It’s something that should be done (in particular) for the money match streams in the VIP rooms. I want to see how the top players handle unknown players/difficult matchups and stuff. If the MMs in the VIP room are being streamed, the stream needs to be archived so as not to punish the people who come down and support CC live. Otherwise, it should be recorded and uploaded later.
And finally (and I can’t stress this enough)… every match in top 32 for AE needs to be recorded in some capacity. Last year, Justin Wong got eliminated off stream and nobody recorded it. We didn’t get to see a lot of the important matches involving how the Japanese players lost. If you’re unable to stream all this (understandable), you NEED to have a recording station lined up here. If you guys are paying thousands and thousands of dollars to invite top players to come down, having the match where they were eliminated from the tournament not recorded in any way just seems like a huge waste.
Heh, well, food is good too. Just saying that if you’re running a fighting game tournament, and it’s costing you tens of thousands of dollars to do, recording the fighting games should be the biggest priority. Especially since the quality of play from the foreign players will probably be the highest out of any non-Evo tournament run the entire year.
I was really sad to learn that more than half of AE top 32 last year is just lost because nobody with a hand cam was there, and nobody was recording the matches. Just seems like such a waste to me. And all it takes to fix is allowing a volunteer with a good laptop/PC record the bulk footage, and then a bit of work splicing some video later. I don’t have the hardware to help but I’d be more than willing to volunteer to help deal with the raw footage later. I’m going to watch it all anyway.
So yeah, if CCG is able to get a caterer to handle the food, they should be able to record the matches I think, lol.
