Huh, interesting.
I was never a big Mad Catz user (though my current portable-stick is a modded TvC, and I do still like the MLG Pro-Circuit controller), it’s nice to see them back.
We’ll see if they offer arcade stick stuff again, though; I didn’t catch any in that promo video.
More options for the consumers s always good.
I’ll reserve hype for after we find out whether their products will be as good as the TE stick era. I want them to do well but IMO everything fighting game wise slowly went down hill after the SFXT sticks, and I’ve never seen anything other than mixed-negative reviews about their PC products.
A marketing video posted to YouTube means nothing, honestly. This is mostly likely posturing to garner media exposure (translation: pique VC interest…as I’m sure they won’t come back as a publicly traded company). When I see the “comeback” posted in something like Wall Street Journal, then I’ll believe it. Till then, #BackInTheGame for me is #WishfulThinking.
According to their website’s blog, they are already in on hardware, and they’ll be debuting their gaming mouse at CES
http://www.madcatz.com/news_detail.html
“At CES 2018, Mad Catz will be previewing the first products in the new range, a line of all-new PC gaming hardware including new R.A.T. mice, S.T.R.I.K.E.™ keyboards, F.R.E.Q.™ gaming headsets and G.L.I.D.E.™ gaming surfaces.”
So it looks like just PC Gaming stuff right now, but I’m all for seeing Madcatz make a comeback. I still love my Madcatz VS stick, and now there’s hope for a revival.
I love my Mad Catz TE as much as the next guy, and I want them to do well. However, did you check the last few lines of that release?
Check those bits in red? Yeah, that’s a third-party PR firm. While it’s indeed customary for such firms to be contracted by, and post public info on behalf of companies, releases of this nature are typically put out by internal PR. If they don’t even have the internal team resources to work through this light stuff, then they don’t have the people or capital to chug back into “the game” that quickly.
I’m optimistic, but cautiously so.
Having products debut at CES means nothing.
Plenty of no-name, no one heard of companies with cheap shotty and knock-off products have booths at CES.
Only reason to be at CES is that anyone who is anyone will be there, even the no-bodies of the industry show up in some form or another.
Mad Catz no longer has Saitek, as that got sold off to Logitech long before the Mad Catz Bankrupcy.
Who is pushing the Mad Catz brand now is a group who used to make Mad Catz merch in a Chinese factory all got together and buyout the trademark and the design specs.
They also already have the production facility and all the tooling.
We aren’t going to see any console stuff for a while, unless they want to make unlicensed stuff again.
Good stuff. Thanks for the details. While their PC products are surely in-house (no external branding), their arcade sticks had Capcom branding slapped all over. I’m pretty sure that license agreement is no longer active.
Hopefully they make waves big enough to get the sticks going again…hopefully with better QC this time around.
We can’t have Hori, Razer & Qanba getting lazy now, right?
