M.O.D.O.K. Thread 2: Orgasm Harder

Doom missiles are good, but they’re not unbeatable – my friend who uses dante/magneto/sentinel is able to avoid missiles pretty well. You can super jump and mess up the missile tracking.

A little trick i found is to use aerial S, then quickly flight mode into another aerial S for a double attack. Its good for when you are descending to the ground and for a bit of a surprise.

wow this might actually make me switch iron man’s assist from unibeam to repulsor blast. I try to play rushdown modok so I’m hoping that repulsor blast will help keep players locked down. Now if it only ate up sentinel drones too that would be awesome. :badboy:

is anyone else terrified of picking modok in a tournament :(…maybe I just need the right teammates, hulk and task master work real good together but this is what my set-up looks like right now

MODOK -Shield
Hulk -Gamma Wave
TaskMaster -Vertical Shot

I have no problems is casuals but when shit is on the line, I skip him :frowning:

I have shamed you all…

I have got to say, MODOK is without a doubt the weakest character I’ve played. I’ve played him since I started, and I am a 4th Lord now. His keep away is just terrible. Sure, he can run away, but he can’t do damage for beans at range because his hyper psyonic blaster is just terrible. Anyone with teleports or dashes that go straight through you destroy him, which pretty much describes half the cast. He is good against a handful of characters, but anyone with a decent rush down team just kills him.

quick question for a very green Modok (just picked the game up over the weekend as I’d been mega busy with switching jobs and countries) in the Modok combos thread I keep seeing listed ‘number of cubes used’ implying there is a finite number? In training mode Ive not encountered any numbering for these cubes… also in the moves list in the pause menu there are a few moves that require him to have some sort of power activated- how does this work?

Yeah I know, very day 1 stuff, just curious.

In all honesty, I have the most success rushing down MODOK with a covering assist. If you catch someone in the air jumping with a IAD:m: go into his air loop. (Takes mad practice, way too much considering this games generally ease of use) The loop will let you ride them into the corner for big damage and get you at least 2/3 cubes. Play him at midrange until you can rush but it takes balls and lots of practice. My reason for this is because at fullscreen MODOK just gets ducked. SJ angled blaster is slow and balls as well. IMO you have to have a solid wave dash game with MODOK. In and out, otherwise you WILL get tagged.

  • Crazy tip, if someone already used an assist and is jumping in on you. Let them them get a couple of jump in hits as long as you laid down an analyze cube. They’ll pop on that puppy IAD in for an air throw off the tech, combo into battering ram super. Or if they are the always mashing buttons type insert combo of choice.

*Gripe anyone else seem to have moments of “I know I was blocking that shit” while in “jump flight mode” and just get tagged for no reason? Maybe it’s because Im flying and doing more than just holding back, so like u/b = not blocking.

I actually had that exact same thought, that u/b doesn’t actually block because I’m always getting hit trying to fly up and back. Blocking in general just seems completely screwed up in this game. You know what else I hate? If I do a regular psyonic blaster, the opponent does a super, and I input hyper psyonic blaster, I will almost always get killer illumination. There is plenty of delay between the two inputs, so I don’t know what is going on. Sometimes I even get hyper battering ram.

When MODOK connects an analyze cube he gains a “Level of Understanding”. He can store of to 9 of these LoU’s. With every LoU, his Hyper Psionic Blaster super gets stronger, up to level 9 where it’s at “Max Power”. In my opinion, MODOKs beam super isn’t work using unless you’ve charged it up with at least 4 cubes.
MODOK also uses up one LoU to use EX versions of his moves. An EX is performed by doing the input of the move using the S button.
EX Bomb= Jamming bomb. Reverses opponents controls
EX Lazer= slightly more damage, probably something else
EX Reflector= giant shield that the opponent must super jump over

If that proves true then its a big hit against MODOK. Im going to test some of my blocking issues with MODOK and see what I can replicate. There just seems to be way too often that I get hit I know I was blocking. Maybe theres a period of vulnerability between blocking grounded and his fly animation? Its happened while Ive been in the air as well.

I get the HPB sometimes too. I would recommend after c.H just hold up and use B+C to dash forward instead of holding forward on the pad. I use IAD -> L myself instead of M.

Hope this helps bro

was anyone able to catch keits matches on the stream? i’d heard he was using modok at final round

Me and Keits both repped MODOK at Final Round. In our second batch of matches, we were put against each other, and we had the first ever “serious” MODOK mirror. I won a match, then he won a match, and our last match was really close. I almost won, but my Sent combo dropped thanks to X-Factor.

I placed top 65 in MvC3, and Keits placed top 25.

Cool I’ll try and find it. Keits made it sound like Haggar did most of the work on his team. I hope MODOK wasn’t just a thug. (What I call a thug is something like Combofiends Taskmaster, a character you have to kill really more than fight. Sort of like the thugs in generic action movie. Sure they CAN kill the main character but what are the chances?)

His damage at full screen is fine. He can’t tag you with a random hyper for big damage, but he does have pretty consistent meterless damage via a good beam. Plus a big chunk of his normal damage is going to come from combos and people killing themselves trying to get in on him.

He’ll have some trouble with teleporters, but I think you’re undervaluing L cubes and L bombs, L itself and having good assists to cover him.

He did end up using Haggar a lot, also IIRC he said he was thinking of dropping Haggar… speaking of which … modok/haggar is really a lovely combo. Even beyond the obvious double lariat love, Haggar himself gets some good mileage out of MODOK-Y and they have fairly decent DHCs.

He has seriously made me consider Haggar. I use Hulk as my assist to get people off of me, but like he said, with Haggar lariat, you get easy 50% off of anyone. Keits also said that he thought Hulk was an overall better character though (which I agree, since his possible damage output seems better in combos).

MODOK definitely feels like the “thug” on my team. I can stall and get a feel for my opponent’s playstyle, but I can also dish out some decent damage with him too.

This. L cubes stop jump-ins, as do well timed M/H cubes. L is a viable anti-air once you get the timing down. I ALWAYS, ALWAYS try to have a shield out. This does two things: Protects assists and can be great for punishing rushdown.

Good assists are critical for every character, as they can make the bad matchups more tolerable.

changed my avatar for the first time in about 2 years.

Note the the EX lazer has a lot of hit stun. If you hit it full screen you can combo it into a super/ a lp beam/hp cube. If you hit in the corner you can do a combo. Very useless for a ex move, I’ll save my cubes for other things.

Yes - another fan of March MODOK Madness! Lots of interesting art there.

I wish he wasn’t so clunky. He’s hilarious, but it’s been a pain to play with him so far.

Im using doom/modok and Id like t know whats better for modok as assist, hidden missiles or molecular shield?
