M.Bison Q&A Thread

Hey dudes.

Maybe this belongs in the beginner thread, but what are Bison’s best options for dealing with meaty command grabs on wakeup? Just picked Bison up and feeling fine.

jump

… Or ex headstomp when you’re in Vtrigger.

Or backdash like a man…

bison is mostly free on wakeup except when in vtrigger with at least 1 bar (2 bars he gets the upper hand)

you either have to go for the jump back OS or guess right. Really there isn’t much bison (or anyone with the same weakness) can do

Thanks for all the speedy replies! I may be perhaps the worst Bison player on the planet. I knew VT EX headstomp had solid invincible startup, but by the time I even realize I have V-trigger stocked, the round is already over.

Tl;dr: As a Bison player, what should I be practicing in training mode besides basic combos?

I’m kinda new to street fighter as a whole, and have just recently started to take fighting games more seriously. Before venturing into SFV I was playing MKX for a few months.

MKX was the first fighting game that I’ve played where I got into the whole frame data, option selects, optimal punishes, ect. and I’m wondering what things as a bison player should I practice/learn besides combos?

Practice your pressure with Bison. You have to know the frame data on block for Bison’s normals to be effective with him as he’s plus on a lot of things and can follow up with more. For example DF.HP is +1 on block, so you’re guaranteed a ST.LK (3 frame startup) after assuming you’re close enough and it will counter hit anything your opponent presses. So in training mode, set your opponent to random guard, put counter hit on, and start your pressure strings. When you land a hit, hit confirm into a full combo.

Practicing anti airs is also important. Record 3 actions of your opponent walking back and forth and pressing a light normal, walking back and forth and pressing a medium normal, walking back and forth and jumping in on you. You should then “play footsies” with the opponent character and try to react and anti air when the opponent jumps.

Superior neutral and pressure is what gets you wins with Bison. FATool online is a good place to find frame data for the whole cast. There’s also a mobile app.

Thank you! This honestly helps a lot. SFV feels different than most fighting games I’ve played recently, and I’m honestly not that experienced with fighting games in general yet to figure this out on my own.

Anything character specific I should practice against? Something that usually gives Bison trouble?

Does anyone know where I can find frames data for vtriggered specials? I downloaded a couple of apps and neither of it have frames for vtriggered specials. One app had it but it looks wrong.

I also tried this website https://toolassisted.github.io/ but is the data correct? For example it shows CH frames for st.lk to be 6?? Surely that cant be right.

Hey guys i have a stupid question.

Does it change something in your approach if the enemy has a 3 frame hit, and its on stand or crouch?

Sounds strange but i mean like, does it make a diffrence if his 3f hit is s.lp or c.lp?

I finally reached 5000 lp and my standard tactics wont work anymore i have to think diffrently. And the thing i struggle most is getting through the enemies defense and getting out of pressure. Like what can i do? Spam s.lk? When do i press s.lk when getting pressured? Cant seem to see the gaps…

Crouching opponents have slightly larger hurtboxes and their crouching and standing lights may have different hitboxes but when you’re on offense it doesn’t change much. If they have a 3f and you do a move that is +1, you should often go for sLK into Blast. Necalli players especially, in my experience, are still pressing sLP after blocking Psycho Axe or EX scissors.

Getting out of pressure is tough for Bison, most of the time you want to block and take the throw. You have to observe your opponents block strings and habits to figure out when it’s time to press a button. EX Headstomp can get you out of a mistimed meaty or from some strings like Necalli’s crMK xx Valiant Rebellion but as an escape move you will get beat more often than not. Still an option. VT EX Headstomp can get you out of trouble too as it’s completely invincible on the way up but that requires you to be in V-Trigger before you get knocked down or pressured. Spamming sLK can work but I personaly try to cut back on my usage of that normal, it’s kind of scrubby to spam that shit and against the players that beat me in weeklies, it just doesn’t work. They’re ready for that with real frame traps.

So I guess work on your neutral to minimize the opportunities for your opponent to pressure you, and learn patience and block a lot even when you are scared of the throw.
