M. Bison ftw (Dictator Thread)

Is this a lag issue, or did I simply forget how cross ups work? 95% of the time I can block cross up attempts, but some matches, usually against Akuma/Ryu’s jumping roundhouse or Ken’s jumping forward I block it, but still get hit anyway. It looks like they are actually “crossing me up” from the front when this happens too, but they still end up hitting me in the back of the head anyway like normal. If this happens once during that round it happens each time they try. I can’t tell if it’s latency affecting the timing, or if I’m just not blocking it correctly.

^Those crossups are pretty ambiguous, they can be hard to block if timed correctly.

I’ve decided to just fuck that shit. Timing is balls tight. In giga’s “shot in the dark” video he talks about it being easy cause you don’t have to cancel or charge, but seriously I find it hundred times easier to do Bison’s cancel/charge combos. Probably should just get to learning TOD combo cause I can do ground combo for it at least 3/4 of time in practice mode, but I can never do this stupid link combo with any consistency and it does less damage so whats the point.

I really only see this combo applicable in situation where it’s difficult to keep your charge (i.e. after a crossup). I’m having a very difficult time with the comb as well, but I honestly don’t care too much because its a GREAT string for poking, even if you mess up the combo timing. I still throw the standing roundhouse out there because the reach is great and it allows me to charge for scissors if needed. Once you have conditioned the opponent to expect the roundhouse at the end of the string you can mix it up with other stuff like the fake slide.

So, I’m still not seeing how Dict has a chance at all against Zangief, even one clearly below the skill level. The suggestions given here are all situational upon the Zangief player being asleep at the wheel or I’m quite possibly the most retarded person on the planet. Jumping roundhouses work great if all they do is jump at you without doing anything or are walking under you performing an action. If however they jumping fierce (not splash) you, you trade and take more damage. Standing roundhouse is similar…they need to be doing something. If all they do is inch forward after each block or lariat if that’s all you seem to be able to do at the moment you’re going to get hit. Slide only works if you’ve actually given them a reason to lariat, but after one or two slides you aren’t getting anymore freebies.

Head stomping the lariats are great too…if they are randomly just tossing them out four or five character widths away. If they don’t do any, all you have is chip damage and run away. Eventually they are going to start hitting you out of those or simply get you in the corner by walking forward. All Zangief has to do to get you there is be in the middle of the screen. This matchup is the only one in the game that I have this much trouble with and it’s extremely frustrating when someone will pick Zangief just because it’s such a bad matchup, then go back to whatever other random characters they randomly jump around and throw out moves with.

Even Chun Li doesn’t come close to being this obnoxious… and all she has to do is jumping short all day.

Ugh I know the feeling. Gief is quickly becoming my worst match up by far, with the exception of Honda. It’s like I have to poke Gief all day with std roundhouse, but that shit won’t keep him out forever. Once Dic gets knocked down its gg. Once Gief starts jumping on top of you its gg. The level of concentration and effort required for Dic to win this match is borderline ridiculous. I’ve played this match on both sides (me being Gief against Dict) and its soooo much easier for Gief its not even funny. The quick lariat shuts down any type of escape you try to make. And its much easier for Gief to do quick lariat and block/jump an incoming Dict slide. This is one of those match ups where I’m just saying to hell with Dict and I switch to another character.

I dunno how different Zangief and Dic are in HD, but in ST, regardless of getting killed by CigarBob many times, I loved the matchup. U really had to be patient, one slip up and u lose.
None and u win.

Weird I find most Zangiefs to be pretty easy to handle. The few really good Zangiefs like XTG and BBH are of course hard to handle, but that’s because they’re hella good.

I second that this match is HELLA fun to play, IMO…

Any advice against Honda, Blanka, or Sim though?

Im having this same issue. J.RH is extremely difficult to deal with which is unfortunate because it’s so common with almost any entry level ryu/ken player, an even bigger issue being that I feel like I have to preempt people with jumping strong’s from jumping all the time when Im even mildly close to them for fear of being boxed out by j.RH, and this can create problems for you in other reasons, for one if the fact that obviously your throwing out a wild guess to prevent a jump in…It’s not just Shot j.Rh’s either, Sagat Cammy and even Gief are really solid at boxing him out and even preventing a slide to get under them, making it extremely difficult to control a match. I played a Sagat who who zoned ok but then boxed me out with RH if I even try and close the gap a bit.

I didn’t know that a well timed stomp can beat it thou, how does that work, and what would be more or less the ideal timing?

This is EXACTLY how I feel the matchup is, you have to play 100% perfect as Dict to win this or you lose against someone who is “close” to your skill level. And I guess until I improve my Dict by quite a bit it’s going to give me fits. And really, this is the only matchup that I can think of where it’s literally impossible to get a dizzy from a combo unless they just do something really dumb like green hand when they know you’re about to jump again.

I really don’t want to have to resort to this tactic, but I was having similar thoughts on the issue myself…it’s so utterly lopsided it’s not even funny.

Not sure if this advice will be useful to you at all, or the type of players you are usually going aginst, but Honda isn’t too bad. Simply spam the hell out of jab to stop his headbutts and jumping strong beats his splash. Other than that, poke him all day with jab crushers.

Blanka is similar…just jab, if he jumps either jab crusher or jumping strong. Blanka is also a “free crusher” every time you block his ball…just do the fierce and it should hit most of the time. Also remember that his hit box is kind of wierd when he’s blocking and he can also easily ball over footsies, so if you’re up close and trying to chip, use crouching jab and strong punches until you’re further away.

Dhalsim is one of the tougher ones for me as well, but it seems pretty even. You literally need to scissor like a madman and pray for either a dizzy or the chance to get in and land a dizzy through a combo. Other than that, I hear standing fierce is good against his drills, but I have yet to be able to stop any drills myself. Once they start going drill crazy and I’m in the corner I just try to get out. Oh, and doing a few head stromps so that they do an upward flame is always useful. I’m also not sure, but it seems like if you trade hits all day you’ll still come out ahead too.

Just a guess, but I think by “well timed” he means psychic in that you head stomp when you expect a jump in…not by reaction. That’s not reliable at all, and practically suicide against Ken.

Nevermore, if Zangief is gaining ground on u and ure ABOUT to be put to the corner, then u absolutely have to stomp, and switch sides, or ure screwed

How can you stomp if he’s in the middle of the screen and you aren’t quite yet in the corner? Can’t he just jump in the air and punch it or forward kick you on your way up? And if you’re too close, can’t a lariat catch you on the way up due to the arc that you travel before you’re actually above them?

Also, about vs Honda, what I said only works vs newer players. I finally went up against a good Honda tonight and had my ass handed to me multiple times. Almost beat him one match, but on the second round (my favor) I couldn’t get the super off for shit when he was HHS me in the corner. This guy knew how to O throw if the first HHS didn’t connect and was just doing chip. He was also good about knowing when to jump back and roundhouse or butt stomp. Maybe those are just Honda basics, but it was the first time I’d actually seen anyone use him that well.

Question about the butt stomp; jumping strong “beats” it, but is this while it’s on the way up too or just on it’s way down? A lot of players will do that to you after a knockdown if they aren’t going to HHS, and I wasn’t sure if I could jump straight up and hit strong to cleanly hit, or if we would trade.

I do believe I’ve started to main Bison.

Oh dear.

I like j.mp alot for the air juggle, but I can’t hit them as well as j.rh. Is there a way to use j.mp consistently?

I just bait a jump in any way I can and j.mp before they do.

Probably only works online though >_>

I tick throw a LOT with dictator - but its really annoying when people escape/reverse the throw. Especially when thats the throw to win the match. Whats the best way to punish? I try standing roundhouse but its often too far away. And slide is too risky.

For one, if a non-teched throw would kill your opponent, they cannot tech the throw. Same thing if the throw would dizzy them. I don’t know if this is intentional or just some quirk of the engine, but that’s the way it is. This makes characters like Chun-Li very dangerous when you’re low on life due to the serious damage on her strong throw.

Also, when it comes to punishing a teched throw…it vastly depends on the opponents character. Some characters you can reliably Knee Press after a tech. Against others, it’s very dangerous to try that. I usually just wait to see what they will do, or walk forward and try to tick them again. Fake slide into throw seems to work well sometimes too.

FUCK HONDA!!!

Honda is the only matchup i nthe game that makes me want to tear my hair out. I know st jab beats headbutt I know fully extended torpedo beats it to and even jmp beats buttslam but if he gets in my face he can handslap and ochio all day and if he turtles I have no idea what to do!

Is there a way to determine what height you get above your opponent using Bison’s devil reverse?

Sometimes I go partially off screen and sometimes I am fairly low flying but the strength of the DR didn’t seem to matter.

I like doing the DR that goes super high and partially off screen but I can never do it when I want, It’s always random.

Thanks in advance.

I agree. Even though I just started playing Dictator like a week ago I can hold my own against the entire roster with him. Only exception is Honda. I’ll get some wins against Hondas on occasion, but for the most part he wrecks me with little effort.
