Good catch I was going by what they had on the EVO stream as for it’s spelling, (bad habbit) I edited the post.
He definitely got favorable matching up on his path to victory. I was really worried about him facing off against Ricky as I think his aggressive rush down style of Rufus woudl have only made a bad match for Rose nigh impossible.
Sure is nice to have a character with a backdash that’s practically a teleport.
Rose’s backdash is serious BS, but it’s even more so in ultra because of what she can get off it now. Why does such a powerful zoning/footsies character need such an utterly OP backdash?
She can control space with her normals, absorb/deflect fireballs, zone with her own fireballs, and if shit hits the fan, she can just backdash to safety in most cases.
AND ON TOP OF THAT, she gets a 0 frame startup ultra that basically totally stops any rushdown on her.
The only reason we don’t see more roses at majors is because most top tier players just never picked her up. she’s always been under the radar, despite always being pretty good in all versions. now that luffy has shown it’s possible, expect to see a sudden rush of Roses just like we did Yuns and E. ryus
Difference is bad rose players get blown up badly compared to yuns and e.ryu’s. Also you’re a few versions behind with that bs ultra… we aint playin super where rose can spam the ultra.
She’s perfectly fine now.
Rose bs…oh please -_-
On a side note one thing I am afraid of is Capcom nerfing her like gen since we have one more patch left.
As a Rose player and European I’m both thrilled and proud that my character and nation were able to take EVO this year. Luffy played fantastically, and anyone trying to discredit that claiming Rose is cheap is frankly delusional. Rose has never been a major threat before Ultra and the reality is that many people playing the vortex orientated characters were really punished by features like delayed wakeup. Luffy may have made the character appear cheap by making a lot of correct reads, and playing quite as well as he did, but something to bear in mind is that Rose
People often make not of the buffs their character receives, but forget to take a not of the changes to others, and to the games core mechanics. For Rose, a character that would traditionally be at the receiving end of mixups and unblockables on previous versions of the game, Ultra was a godsend and meant that Rose and other characters not dependent on these gimmicks could get a level playing field.
Luffy was also fortunate to face three fei longs, it’s a pretty even matchup for Rose and Luffy had the benefit of playing around a third of his matches against these characters. Whilst it was by no means an easy ride, playing the same matchup 3 times, almost in sequence is a hugely beneficial. Especially as Gacht, Fudo and Mago all play the character very similarly. It must have felt like beating the same guy three times, Luffy got to learn more and more about the Fei matchup as he went through them, but they only had one set against him, so he definitely had an advantage by the time he reached Fudo in losers finals.
That aside, Evo this year featured two players who have never been in that spot at all, it was very evident that the pressure got to both of them. Meaty Ultra from Bonchan, plenty of whifs, dropped combos and jumpings (the latter from Luffy) showed that despite their very solid play both of these players were not familiar enough with that kind of high-pressure scenario. In this regard Luffy was very fortunate to match up against Bonchan (who’s never had a shot at winning a tournament as large as evo before either), and not more experienced players such as Infiltration, Diago, Marn or Akuma, as I feel they would have really punished either player much more for their stress-induced mistakes.
That’s not to discredit Luffy though. He did fantastically up until the bracket reset of the grand final, probably the best Rose play we’ve ever seen and it’s fantastic that he took the title. It’s just he’s going to need to learn to cope with the pressure if he wants to consistently win majors and have a shot at taking Evo again next year.
I’m so happy for him. He’s worked so hard these last few years. Heck, he only lost to the eventual champion last year.
This is bad news for us Rose players though. Now people will complain that she’s top tier and needs nerfed.
Even though I’ve played Rose since the Alpha games, I will probably get more hate mail now as well.
You will definitely get more hate for playing Rose. As a Rose main since SF4 she is of course my go to character and have recorded over 17k matches with her online. Yet I was playing just about 30 mins ago and doing quite well when I got a hate mail from the player I just beat calling me a “bandwagon jumping f@gg@t and a wanna be Luffy”…sigh…
Just hop in to say congrats to Luffy. It was an amazing ride to watch the entire event, especially vs Snake Eyes. That match was so intense I have to drink water several times. Can’t imagine the pressure actually playing a fight like that.
And that being said, hopefully in the future a Sakura made top 8.
Today’s match proves unblockable is no longer trending and required, but all the good matches are all about fundamentals.
Honestly, I hate Rose, but she is a personal mental block for me that I have yet to shake and I’m still trying to get the matchup down.
On the real, Luffy played that so well, he was making good decisions, he was getting a lot of good punishes and making Rose look really broken. He’s an unexpected champion this year, but you could tell how hard he was playing the whole time. He’s going to be really scary if he keeps the fire going after this.
No one’s going to be sleeping on Europe anymore. Everyone already knew how good Ryan Hart was, now Luffy is on the map. Suddenly the whole world is a minefield in SF.
