LS-32 modification tutorial, "Project LS-36"

Haha. I’ve consolidated with both camps myself. Now I can freely switch from one to the other without fear! It’s nice being a courier. :nunchuck:

Hmmm…I haven’t actually tried doing this modification with the LS-40-01 PCB as opposed to the LS-32-01 PCB. When I went to order the parts for this, I just got the smaller individual parts from AkihabaraShop. I didn’t actually order the two joysticks.

I actually didn’t know though that the LS-40-01 had a different PCB from the LS-32-01 in terms of engage distance and whatnot. slagcoin’s site definitely has nothing about that, so that’s pretty neat information I learned from you! I wish I had comparison images though. That would help out a lot.

so i attempted to mod my hss-0130 with this. so the plate needs to be grinded to make room to the pivot it seems. also it was a 32 not a 32-01 so i think that makes a difference as the actuator does not touch the switches correctly. anyone else try this on a 32? do not want to have to gut a 01 if possible.
Edit: got it worked out. had to shorten the shaft cover to get the pivot corrected. works lovely. mucho good!!

id like to give out some new information ive just found out while doing this mod. This is mainly for those that were turned off by the “semi-circular” idea that comes with the mod. If you take your ls-40 actuator and grind the bottom down to the point where its the same length as the actuator on the ls-32, you get everything that comes with an ls-32, a fixed pivot, and NO “semi-circular” gate.
(yes, this means you can use your square gates again.)

you will, however, lose the short throw that comes with doing the mod as instructed on page 1. So if you like the short throw, don’t do what i have instructed above. unless you have a spare ls-40 actuator, then knock yourself out. cuz there’s no going back to the tight feel / short throw once you have done what i have just suggested.

that is all.

can you use a ls-40 on a tournament? Or you can only use it with this LS-32 modification?
Does Ls-40 has a 5 pin to connect?

Yes, it’s possible to mount LS-40 on a TE/SE with SS Mountingplate. The LS-32 comes with this plate so is ready to madcatz modd, for LS-40 you should buy the aditional SS Mountingplate. As for 5 pin, yes, LS-40 does.

thx you!

Because of this post I was able to get the stick together when the C-clip was removed and the components dropped over the room. Thanks… Specially was confused with cylinder and spring holder.

Glad the guide was of help!

Thanks for this good information! Great tutorial!

For some additional Ls-32 goodness…

If you purchase 3/8 inch PVC tubing you can create your very own shaft covers for an Ls-32. (3/8 is almost too tight with PVC but it does fit)

Although I also like the looks of an Ls-32 without the shaft cover sometimes just because that is sort of a unique quality to it’s presentation.

I found that by dropping in a JLW spring that the “jump” effect also disappeared.

In my favorite LS-32 I have a:

JLW spring,

Aluminium Bat-top,

round restrictor gate,

and NO secondary gate.

It’s an Incredibly solid feeling, and silky smooth controller.

I found out a way to get little better results interchanging ls-40/32 spares. Since i found out the ls-56/32 pivot cylinder are the same except for the shaft hole size, i decided to make something that could work. Before to explain, i would like to tell that i did Ikagi’s ls-36 project sometime ago and although the project is functional, the ls-40 pivot cylinder doesn’t fit the ls-32 bearing base properly and the overall result is that you can still reach diagonals but they become shorter due to pivot size incompatibility. Now the point is…the ls-40 shaft doesn’t fit inside ls-32 pivot properly but the ls-56 shaft is thinner than both, so is possible to make both ls-40 shaft and ls-56 pivot compatible between each other if you take some of ls-56 pivot cylinder hole.

That’s what i did with a sandpaper and patience. Here goes the results;
ls-36 with ls-56 pivot hole modified: ls-32 throw/engagement, lighter feeling of ls-40 but not tight, goes back to neutral very fast like ls-32, shaft cover, taller shaft, can reach all directions perfectly, no weird feeling of something incompatible. Unfortunately the pivot jumping issue and the neutral wobble are still there since the pivot measurements is the same as before, at least is 100% compatible. Overall it’s a lighter/smooth and taller ls-32.

I did it because i like the feeling of the ls-40 and engagement/throw of the ls-32. I also did the same with ls-40 pivot to fit ls-32 shaft into ls-40 base properly but i’ll tell this experience detailed in a new topic with pictures later.

For the people who would like to give this mod a try, i think is important to say that i have the original Seimitsu lubrication G-501 in stock, don’t mix up both G-501 factory application with G-30M, don’t replace all with G-30M either, replace with the same used by Seimitsu or save/recycle the original as better as you can.

PS: even with pivot issue, the feeling is really great. Also great accuracy.

Put the shaft in the freezer. You’d be surprised how much metal will shrink/swell as the temperature changes (it’s part of the reason why pickle jars open more easily for the second person you hand them to).

Anyone still running one of these mods? I’m about to build my first stick, and I figure getting an LS-32 with the required components for the LS-36 mod would cover me if I don’t like the feel of the LS-32. Also, has anyone had any experience swapping springs between this stick and others? I’d like to get all of my Aki purchases done in one go.
