Louis' Movie Recommendations w/ commentary

I drank a lot of Monster Energy Drink today…

So what’s this thread about, anyway?

I thought this was the unofficial ott? If it isn’t then boy my face is red.

just edit the title to something like 'louie’s movie recommendations’
i like that thread more.

give your top 10 louis. i’m curious. i don’t really watch movies

I don’t care what people say about SFIV, or what history there is about the community here or for other games I know one thing and one thing only.

If SFIV hadn’t come along, I would have had to have built my own arcade stick due to incredibly poor availability in the UK before the MadCatz sticks. And I’m too lazy for that building my own stuff so I’d likely have not gotten back into fighting games as I didn’t realise SF3 was on Dreamcast in the UK (it’s not on PS2 here) so I never played it until recently and I’m getting into it a lot.

So in a way, it’s thanks to SFIV that I’m even getting into SF3. I wouldn’t have done so with a pad.

Serious? Okay then… Going to avoid more obscure choices and just go with great films that are on Netflix Instant Watch:

Demolition Man: If you love Stallone and Cheesy action flicks than you have to see this one. It’s a requirement. Great humor, futuristic action, Wesley Snipes being a damn good villain. Great stuff.

Vigilante: If you like, well vigilante movies like Death Wish or The Exterminator you need to see this one. Done pretty realistically. Plus I have a thing for grindhouse movies set in NYC.

Santa Sangre: Brilliant psycho-surrealist serial killer film by Alejandro Jodorowsky. A funny, disturbing, violent, bizarre, and totally unique experience.

Winnebago Man: One of the best documentaries I’ve seen in the past few years. Funny and very well done.

Rampage: Uwe Boll’s masterpiece. His only one but the acting is good, the effects are great and I think everyone has thought about doing it at least once. There’s that one scene at a Bingo Hall so typical of Boll’s other terrible films but aside from that. It’s an entertaining flick.

Doug Stanhope: Burning the Bridge to Nowhere: Stanhope is one of the best comics working today. The man is fucking amazing. Watch his shit. If you’re unsure just youtube ‘doug stanhope’ and watch some of his shit.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover: Amazing arthouse picture. Fantastic acting and it’s really fucked up. This is definitely not something made for Oscar Bait. You’ll either like it or hate it. There’s no in-between.

Parents and Session 9: If you like subtle horror films that don’t rely on gore I’d recommend these two. Parents is a little more experimental but it’s very underrated. Session 9 could be the new The Shining. Very similar kind of vibe to Kubrick’s film.

Deadfall: If you want something that’s so bad it’s good to watch I’d recommend it. have you ever seen ‘Nicolas Cage Loosing his Shit’? Remember those clips of Cage with that mustache freaking out? This is the movie where that’s from.

Videodrome: David Cronenberg’s masterpiece. A gory, surreal, and unbelievable mind-fuck of a film.

River’s Edge: Imagine if David Lynch collaborated with John Hughes. Great film!

South of the Border: Oliver Stone documentary on the Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez and the upswing of Independent South American countries.

Creepshow and From a Whisper to a Scream: Do you like gory anthology horror films? Watch these two.

Oh, and Battle Royale is on there too.

the only 2 i know of (and have seen) there are demolition man and battle royale.
i see that session 9 takes place at the danvers psych hospital. i went to school right near danvers and salem. saw that building when they were taking it down or whatever they were doing. was a pretty big deal.

salem is impossible to travel through near halloween btw. everywhere is packed. halloween night the whole town is closed down and people are out partying in the streets in costume. it’s a silly place.

Movie starts at 2:30.

Those would be how many years old now. Kinda like 3s, “classics.” didn’t knock those.
There was a reboot last year, louis said it, 2010 Xbox360/PC by SEGA lost some money.
Various PSP games with Predator.

‘classic’ would be aliens online. that’s old. that game was also awesome.

[details=Spoiler]I’ve got shoes older than some hypebeassssts, HORI PS2 stick oldman too, older than Namco heralded.
Someone said Guilty Gear 2008 was classic in one of these SBO threads?
“how is that classic?!”[/details]

to get this back on track

Time Travel + Horror in a Spanish film Time Crimes was the last sorta gory, trip out film I’ve seen. One of those fun to go back and watch to see the intricacies throughout you missed with a new understanding of the real plot-- but the ending is Euro style, not for everyone, stomach turner. Not over the top gory or anything though. Still have to do Battle Royale before it gets ruined in 2, lil bro bought it for $5 japan town just bcuz it was $5, said way ruined from original.

Online friends streamed that Bill Pullman one up there ^ Missed out.

Reminds me of Primer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primer_(film)

Yo, just saw Prince of Darkness. Really good movie! Can’t pick between this and In The Mouth of Madness though, both good in different ways

Also lol’d @ random Alice Cooper

Primer made a little/lot less sense. but it was expected there’s going to be a part where the audience can’t follow, still a good watch. This was a little voyuerism, man with a new house and wife, going off into the woods seeing upon a nude lady out there via his binoculars, finding a scientist with shifty motives testing a time machine. Interesting Villain costume made through circumstances and household items.

Should I be ashamed to admit that I’ve only seen Demolition Man of those?

Also I liked it.

More Netflix picks:

(Random pick)

The Rules of Attraction: First, holy fuck this is on Netflix instant!?! Had no idea. Netflix does a terrible job at showing all the films they have available. Anywho, this is probably one of the great films of the 2000’s. Great acting. Amazing direction. Subversive and funny. A little like Pulp Fiction, and that was because it was written and directed by the co-writer of Pulp Fiction Roger Avary. If you’re a fan of the writer Bret Easton Ellis then you’ve most likely already seen it. If not I would still highly recommend it. It’s in my personal top 10 for the decade.

(Art House)

Enter the Void: Gaspar Noe’s tale of drug and alcohol addiction in the center of Japan’s sex district. Very trippy film.

(Horror)

Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer: The DEFINITIVE film on serial killers. Everything made after this has taken it’s que. Even though it isn’t factually accurate to the real Henry Lee Lucas aside from his childhood being the same. But it remains as a very well made picture with amazing performances by Michael Rooker and Tom Towles. This could be considered disturbing but I personally wouldn’t put it up there with the I Spit on Your Grave, Cannibal Holocaust, and Serbian Film-levels of disturbing.

(Comedy/drama)

Adaptation: An underrated Nicolas Cage film.

(Action)

The Boss (1973): Bad ass old school Italian mob film made by one of the great director’s of the genre Fernando Di Leo. Take a chance.

Close to “Henry blablabla”, try “Man bites dog” if you can.

Man Bites Dog isn’t anything like Henry. Man Bites Dog is a faux documentary, serial killer comedy. The tone couln’t be anymore different between the two of them. Great film though but I wouldn’t compare it to Henry. Now, for films similar to Henry I would recommend Maniac (1980) which is a little more slasher-ish than Henry but is still fairly grounded in reality, plus it has amazing effects and character actor Joe Spinell in a career-defining role.

I liked Session 9 but the ending didn’t do it for me. lots of buildup and atmosphere and then the ending is just kinda straightforward. not really sure how they could’ve ended it though.

The original ending was even worse and completely demystified the film. I didn’t mind it but the ending is a little lackluster as it is in the film.
