Louis' Movie Recommendations w/ commentary

Are you telling me you weren’t amused by the poop!?

I was more amused by the Puff Daddy/Diddy/Whatever cameo.

How about Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D? Watch it last night. The original was great, the remake I liked but this was pure trash to me. Dude on the meat hook getting bisected was cool and the ladies in it were very easy on the eyes but even that couldn’t touch the horrible acting, dialogue and plot.

Maybe you’re more forgiving with your choice genre Louis?

Texas Chainsaw 3D (Official title, newb) was easily the 2nd worst film in the entire franchise. Had some good gore and the guy playing Leatherface did a good job. Yet the characters and especially story was insultingly bad. Yeah, so the final girl turns out to be Leatherface’s relative and he becomes her protector and she almost immediately accepts him as the member of her close family and helps him even though he just recently murdered all of her friends… Almost as retarded as the Illuminati subplot in the 4th film (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation). And it’s not really saying much if you’ve made a film only slightly better than Part 4.

Hated the remake. Liked R. Lee Ermey a lot. I thought the prequel to the remake was better just because of there being more of Ermey and just by sheer number of actual chainsaw killings (the most in the entire franchise per movie, in most of the films only 1-2 people actually die via chainsaw). Stick to the original. There’s no substitute. Part 2 is really fun dark/gore/comedy. Part 3 was okay.

R. Lee Ermey can never top Full metal Jacket. Though he is a natural creepy bastard who fits well into horror.

It was a one-note performance but it was a damn good one-note performance.

Ok tough guy, let me relocate this conversation to a more appropriate arena.

So have you watched either of the new Star Trek movies and what did you think? Also what is your relationship to the previous franchise?

I hate Sci Fi/Fantasy movies*. So no. I did enjoy the Plinkett review of the Reboot: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-trek/star-trek-09/

But otherwise I just don’t like Fantasy or Sci Fi movies. Hate Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar, Lord of the Rings, Willow, etc. Not my thing. Exceptions would be the Alien and Predator films and I guess the first two Terminator and Robocop films. Robocop 2 is underrated as fuck FYI.

*I do like Art House Sci Fi films so I love Kubrick’s 2001, Solaris (the original), and Ghost in the Shell.

Ok I see. Sorta “I’m not racist, I hate everyone equally”. I can respect that.

As monstrous robotic antagonists go, Robocop 2 was pretty interesting.

Aliens 2 is a legit classic of horror/sci-fi/action. Geiger is twisted genius.

Haha, a lot of those franchise you like have a common thread of breaking the sequal rule.

Predetor 2? Kinda under appreciated like Robocop 2?

Robocop 2 is “good” it’s definitely flawed and I admit to that. BUT! It’s entertaining, retains the social commentary and parody of the first film, not to mention the violence of the first film, and Peter Weller is great as Robocop. Even if you hate it I don’t see how anyone could hate the “Thank you for not smoking” scene.

I also find the production history to be interesting considering the original script was by Frank Miller. The studio thought Frank’s script was unfilmable (for good reason) and changed a lot about it but retained the skeleton of his script. You can read about that here: http://www.i-mockery.com/comics/longbox24/

Predator 2 is a good sequel. Production-wise it’s on par with the first film, the effects by Stan Winston and co. are top notch. And it was really shot in L.A. and makes good use of the location, I don’t know why it’s set in 1997 but whatever. It also established the Predator’s honor code and we get that much more information about the creature and their motivation and how long they’ve been visiting earth. Danny Glover and Gary Busey are also great in it. But the script isn’t as great as the first film because it’s essentially a re-hash of the first film and we have to go through the process of Glover figuring out that an Alien Hunter is after him and we just don’t get enough time to hang out with our main characters and see how they hold up in combat and just get to know them that is excluding Glover. The first film has what I think is a perfect script. It’s set up perfectly where we’re introduced to all of our characters and we really get to know them in that helicopter ride. THEN we get to see them kick some ass and get some additional character development so we the audience can see that these guys are the ultimate badasses. THEN when that’s established thus enters the Predator and a 2nd movie begins and we get an Action/Horror take on The Most Dangerous Game.

*Also, it’s Aliens not Aliens 2. There is an Italian rip off called Alien 2: on Earth though:

PS: I tend to like sequels that are really different from the previous film. Hence, I love Alien 3 (Assembly Cut), Halloween 3, Jason Goes to Hell (Friday the 13th Part 9), Hellraiser Inferno (Part 5), Nightmare on Elm Street 2, etc. But within reason, I hate Jaws: the Revenge.

Wow I knew that. What a rookie mistake. I always really liked the way they titled the second movie.

in what way is solaris 'art house’
just because it wasn’t done by jj abrams or michael bay? <_>

I think he meant more cerebral sci-fi.

Definitely yeah. Same applies to Akira. And I’ve noticed that people that are film buffs but don’t really watch Anime love Akira and people that are really into Anime don’t really like Akira.

Yeah I get that.
Stalker is the most beautifully filmed movie i’ve ever seen.

everything else is just a let down.
akira is great. beautiful animation and awesome music + a cool story.

Akira manga> movie

there is just so much more story in the manga, but its understandable considering time constraints and whatnot

there is no way the manga could ever be condensed into a 2 hour movie. tv series sure

I was trying to think of a clever way to link this trailer but fuck it.

Trivia: the guys in the SRK movie fanatic thread are scrubs!

Miami Connection is on Netflix now, FYI.
