even though I might be a few decades late to the party, I decided to finally give Street Fighter a try, because it annoys me that my friends always beat me up and I’m not even a button masher. However, I’m coming from Quake so I think I’m used to competitive games with a high skillceiling. but I never really played any iteration of Street Fighter.
Right now I have decided on a character (Cammy) and practice to input normals, specials, small combos, etc. I think after reading some guides I fianlly come close to understand the basic concepts of links, cancels and so on, but I still fail to excecute it without flaws.
So I have no previous Street Fighter (or any bemu) experience besides the 30 hours I put into SSF4:AE (pc) now. Therefore I’m quite happy that I managed to beat arcade mode on easy But I certainly don’t want to stop there. I manage to do the first 11 trials with Cammy as well, but I’ve yet to win my first online game (besides versus a friend who also started with the game).
Upcoming now is a week of vacation, and I plan on putting some time into the game. Right now I’m looking for advice on how to practice properly.
Is it better to keep practicing the basics in training/trial mode, or should I try to execute what I’ve learned in online battles? Or mix it up?
How do I properly practice defense? When I play my friend, I usually get an AEC rating But whenever I try to focus on blocking I fail to hit enough and I have a real hard time to get my def rating above D (for whatever it’s worth…)
About the character choice (Cammy), after reading stuff it occurs to me that it’s crucial to learn the instant Cannon Strike. While the EX version is rather easy to do for me, the normal version close to ground is somewhat counter intuitive. However, I get the impression that Cammy is only considered a strong character due to the abuse of Cannon Strikes. Is this something I should bother about? Is it even true? Is this even an issue at the level I currently play at?
Throws. How? I fail to find the right timing/spot/situation for throws. What am I missing? It’s either me being too far away or me getting punched to the face
The amount of information is a bit overwhelming, and I’m not really sure on what to concentrate. I’m open for any type of hint or suggestion. If anyone wants to play a real newbie scrub, add me on gfwl: malk101
I would say the main thing you wanna focus on especially first starting out is working on inputs and getting used to the game mechanics. You spend a lot of time in training mode but also a lot of time online. Since you use two different parts of your brain when you’re practicing on a dummy and fighting against an actual opponent, try to even out your time doing both. Combos and inputs will eventually become muscle memory with time so don’t be discouraged if you have a hard time with certain things (My execution isn’t great either lol) as far as Cammy specific things you wanna visit her specific character thread throughtout the forum, I can guarantee you’ll find some awesome info there. And for throws, you can kinda use them anytime you want, there’s no good time or bad time to throw. Don’t become predictible with it though as very good players will be able to tech your throw or whiff punish it. Hope this helps you a bit.
Start playing real people. You might lose a lot, but the point is that you’re getting better than you would by playing against the computer. At first, the most important thing is to just spam matches and get as much experience as you can. Once you’re more confident, you should slow down and start analyzing your play, but only after you’ve played long enough to know what to work on.
When you do use training mode, you should be working on blockstrings and basic combos that you can hit consistently. Don’t spend too much time on this. Practice throwing out normals to get used to their ranges and start figuring out the properties of your moves. Like guns in Quake, you want to be able to use all of your weapons effectively.
TK Cannon Strike isn’t really necessary for you to learn at this point, but it wouldn’t hurt to practice it a little bit every day until you get it down. What kind of input device are you using?
Throws are just another part of your mixup. Cammy likes to be up close, so you’ll be using throws once in awhile during pressure when your opponent is giving you too much respect. Throws are not to be used randomly, that’s why you have your normal moves to poke and pressure with.
The ratings postgame mean nothing whatsoever, don’t even worry about them.
Concerning ‘being predictable’:
Is there a rule if thumb or something I should pay attention to even in the beginning? I know how hard it is to change something you’re doing successfully wrong for years
To 3: I use a Hori Fighting Stick mini 3. I’m not that used to arcade sticks but I’ll practice. I do feel like a 5yo tho when I face online opponents (especially when I’m not used to the opponents character)
Just check out your replays and you’ll notice.
I had the habit of always throwing two fireballs or jumping in if I got pushed out of poke range and throw fireballs on opponents wakeup a lot.
The best way to recognize your patterns and mistakes is being punished repeatedly for it and watching your own replays.
TK canon strike is only possible with the Ex version!!
(normal only worked before Arcade Edition).
Use the training mode to learn your combos. I would suggest these two (no more at the beginning).
cr.lk, cr.lp ~ cr.mp xx qcf.hk
cr.hp ~ cr.mk xx qcf.hk
First one is your to go combo in every situation, second is for hard punishes (your opp whiffs DP etc). For faster punished just use: cr.mk xx qcf.hk
You can use the training mode with bunny on CPU and easy difficulty just to learn these combos on a moving target. Dont play against people before you can pull off these basic combos.
Its ofc always better to play against humans, but it doesnt make sense if you cant do the basic things, you will get beat up pretty bad and you will learn nothing, because you will have no opportunity to learn your combos or anyything, because you will block the whole time and get punshes. So at first get comfortable with your character and his combos in training mode, then search for opponents with equal!! skill (or even less to practice the combos and offense potential!), dont search for much better players, you can do it later in your carreer, when you know much more especially the matchup specific stuff.
im not an amazing player, far from it actually but the best advice i got when i started out was use ryu until you understand the game he is the best beginner character mainly because you learn allot about spacing with him which IMO is the most important part about fighting games
