Long time fan wondering if it's too late?

Hello everyone! Long time Street Fighter II fan/spectator and have longed thought about trying out one of the games for realz this time. I’ve always been just one of those guys that needs competition. I can’t just play a game for a little bit and be satisfied y’know? I have to either become great at it…or ultimately it’s juste a waste of time in my eyes. Trouble is the current popular competitive games I’m just not that into. Starcraft while great is very stressful and right now crazy over saturated with great players. As for league and DOTA…well I’m just not that into the genre. SFIV has these super ridiculous specific/hidden timings in order to do some of the most basic of combos. (seriously have any new player try to do the trial mode and no matter how you slice it – there’s just no intuitive way to learn the game.) And…UMvC seems to just be a super move spam fest… : /

But after downloading SFII HDR it feels just perfect to me and really makes me want to learn this game.

So my questions to you guys are as follows…

 1. Are there any tournaments currently being held for this game? (whether online or at some event)

 2. What advice would you have for a new player looking to get into the game?

Thanks in advance for any well thought out input : )

 1. There both online and offline tournaments for HDR/classic ST that still go on. I’d check the tournament thread in this forum and the SRK tournament thread to see if anything is going on in your area offline. Every now and then you’ll see some online toudnies, Moonchilde has been running tournaments for HDR on PSN the past couple months, there are threads about them in this forum for info, results, match vids, etc.

 2. The best advice I can give a new player is to be patient, you are going to get beat up a lot as you first learn this game. This game tends to be very match up dependent, and it will take awhile for you to start learning the match ups. This isn’t a game that you can just spend a lot of time in training mode to get good at, you really need experience in matches to progress. Things like knowing match ups, good space control, good poking, all are much more important than things like big damage combos and intricate set ups (which is different from most “modern” fighting games). You can add those types of things once you have the basics down.

Everyone is different but I usually recommend new players stick to one chacter while learning to play. You’ll not only need to learn that character’s special moves (the easiest part), but also how to effectively use all of their normal moves (when to use them, at what range, timing, etc), and also all of that character’s match ups.

Good luck, and hope you enjoy the game as much as all of us do!

Yeah man thanks for the input! Feeling pretty pumped. Haven’t played “this” since the early 90s on my sega genesis hahaha : P Time to play for realz : D (hopefully there’s online tournies for xbox…if not ill need to buy another arcade stick…lolz)

You’ll notice that 3 decades on, Sagat can now do 3 Tiger Knees in a row. Cool!

Welcome back to the world of SF2! I’m glad you still enjoy the game and that you want to delve deeper into the rabbit hole.

 1. Why yes! There is! In fact, a pretty big tournament was held this past year at Evo called Tournament of Legends. Some of the match footage should be up on youtube, and it’ll give you an idea of what sort of things has been happening in ST in this past year alone. Alongside the HDR section, I also recommend you keep an eye out in this sub sections:

http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?forums/super-street-fighter-ii-turbo.254/

http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?categories/regional-matchmaking.110/

Regional matchmaking is important, since it’ll let you connect with other fellow players. If you live in the NY area, there seems to be some decent ST competition over at Next Level Arcade in Brooklyn.

Some guys are trying to run a consistently monthly tournament on PSN for HDR, with the next one coming up in a few days.

 1. As far as advice goes, be mindful of the fundamentals of street fighter. Fancy combos are fun to do and look cool, but you’ll rarely get a chance to land them. It’s far more important that you learn how to control space using your normal and special attacks and learning how to counter your opponent’s jump attacks at a variety of ranges.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most guys are willing to help offer some advice to you and can help you out if you have any general or specific questions regarding the game, your character, and your matchups.

I guess Im the right one to spoil the fun, the game is very good but the thing is there is lack of real competition, the player base for HDR is a tiny amount of what it was back in 2009, the most char u r going to face is Akuma, I would suggest u to start with HDR n some time later move to ST.

IMO ST is the best fighting game ever created: simple to play, yet very complex to master.

Thanks for the input/advice guys! Really you guys are awesome: D

and yeah that’s really cool that they still have ST tournaments at evo!

really kickass ^^ How does one qualify for that? Can anyone sign up? Haha I know I’m total shit at the game atm lolz but if there’s a potential proving ground with high level play – that’s something that can hardcore motivate me to improve

I still don’t like you, PointBreak91.

If you’re on the Eastcoast, we should play some time. I keep a decade long mental record of outstanding Western Chun-Li players (Justin Wong need not apply).

OK, for one that is not really true. The player base on GGPO isn’t near what it was before HDR came out either, you tend to see the same few people on there all the time (and a bunch log in but never actually play). There are still plenty of good players to play on HDR, especially if you have both an Xbox and PS3 (and no, the most played character is Akuma). I do, however think the best thing to do is play both games as many places as you can (HDR on XBL and PSN, ST on GGPO and Supercade, for example).

Two, this is a new player asking for help to start playing SF2, this is the very last place to try and start another HDR/ST debate. No wonder we have trouble getting new players to play SF2. Please troll somewhere else, I’d like to see you actual contribute something when you post other than always trolling. Positive is the way to go, especially with new players.

I don’t know how much experience you have but I highly recommend watching this tutorial videos. They may be a little long but they do a really good job explaining some important aspects of HDR and ST like controlling space, meaties, safe jumping, etc.

ToL for this year hasn’t been announced yet, but if/when it does, there will be more details about how to join the ToL. Normally there are qualifiers that are held all across the US and Europe, with some notable Japanese players wanting to come and play as well. When you win the qualifier, you earn your spot at the chance to play in ToL alongside many other great players.

Of course, Evo also does have regular ST tournaments as well, not to mention casual games, money matches, and occasional team tournaments. During ToL, we actually played in a large 32 v. 32 team tournament that was completely free, and it was awesome. But Evo is definitely a great place to get to meet other fellow ST members of the community, as well as getting a chance to test your might against some of the best players around the world.

Definitely check out madpossum’s videos. Those Sirlin tutorials are a great primer on the basic mechanics of SF2 play, and should serve to give you an idea of what goal you’re trying to accomplish in a match, and the ways to do it. Of course, if you have any questions not covered by the videos, we’ll be more than happy to help.

You guys are so incredibly helpful! Thanks a lot seriously. : )
Any Ryu specific tutorials that you know of? Been playing him since I was a kid – thought I’d do my kid self proud haha ^^

I don’t know of any Ryu specific tutorials, other than videos that teach you how to combo with him. A few notable ones would be the ones from fighter101:

That’s his whole upload list. Thumb through those for some good ST tutorials. He teaches things like advanced link combo, buffering combos into supers, a guide on reversals in ST, stuff like that.

Here are some Ryu specific ones:

They won’t cover everything, but they’ll get you started. Ryu has a LOT of tools at his disposals, and a variety of playstyles you can utilize, so it’d be nearly impossible to cover everything.

You can start with HDR to learn then jump into ST escene, or play both. you can also try GGPO(for pc) you can play with tournament winners/ or very skilled players like damdai, afro legends, kuroppi, dngrs papercut, moocus, djfrijoles, NeoRay(japan), Shun Joker(Japan), The bastard, and the best player in the world PHILCITO! lol j/k

The big deal again is ST and Classic mode, Capcom is supporting Classic Mode that mode is an emulation(not perfect but close enough) to the real ST aka SSFIIT or Super Turbo, so if you want to be involved in tournaments with prizes, streams(sabin, megaman-x8, kuroppi).

Also evo2012 hosted the Tournament of Legends tournament focused on ST featuring titans like alex valle, john choi, Daigo(japan), Kusumondo(Japan) and some other pros listed above in this same message.

More uselful links:

We support ST!, also we support HDR.

Just like to add that you won’t run into too many akuma players in HDR (The only one I can think of that I played recently is el patriarca 2 and he only plays ranked and is a rage quitter when you beat his akuma back to middle school). If you do manage to run into another akuma player he/she will probably suck lol…Just keep playing and you can add me if you play on xbl, I love this game as well

Hey TC, I know you said you’re more of a Ryu player, but if you have any questions on Fei Long or T.Hawk, I’m the guy to talk too. Honda, talk to Mad Possum. He knows Honda in and out practically. El Trouble knows Ken very well too.

I do? That’s news to me. I mostly specialize in old shotos and guile, lol.

For general character help, I can offer some advice. I’ve studied the game and various matchups pretty extensively, and would be more than happy to help you out in any way I can. I’m not too keen on the HDR specific stuff, I’m mostly into ST, but 90% of it translates over just fine.

For Hawk advice/questions, I suggest you log onto GGPO and ask damdai, djfrijoles, or DNGRS PAPERCUT (or Chew as I like to call him). For Fei questions, there are a few folks on GGPO who can help (CigarBoB - if you can catch him logged on, hypenated, etc.).
