London Thread 2011

I don’t care who is playing haggar only has 2 real approaches. Lead pipe and heavy violent axe. All you have to do is super jump, air dash and fly away he can never catch you. He has no real, fast mixups he can do. If he has an assist he can whiff crouching H and roll around but that’s about it. He has one of if not the best assist in the game but even that you can’t abuse because it takes life just to use it.

Sentinel is free?

You make it sound easy to snap phoenix in and kill her. I don’t like playing her anymore but if you come out on Thursday I will show you what I mean. It’s so easy to win w/ phoenix I feel dirty.

I will agree with you on one thing: that taskmaster has a tonne of potential to be good.

Sentinel is easy, free is a little TOO much lol
and you’re making it sound like snapping Phoenix in early and taking her out is stupid easy, if this was the case, no one would complain about Phoenix. Alas it is much harder than it sounds. Even Marn was mentioning it on the Final Round stream and also mentioned how numerous top players were taken out by Dark Phoenix alone lol

A good Phoenix is always hard to deal with even when snapped in. It’s not super easy, it’s something that comes with a ton of practice. Most important thing is learning how to mix up someone hard when they get tagged in, and by that I mean before they even land their feet on the ground. It’s definitely doable and it’s something that should be practiced. This game is still green, but guaranteed she will be exposed eventually.

I stand by my Haggar statement. You can run away from Haggar all you want which is a legit tactic, but he has more ways of getting in than the two that you just mentioned. And again, if those are the only two approaches you think he has, then you haven’t faced a good Haggar yet.

I still stand by my sentinel statement. Unless in X-factor mode, Sentinel is slow as shit and he telegraphs all his shit from a mile away. Takes a lot of damage to kill him but his hitbox is huge so it makes it super easy to mix him up.

I’m in Waterloo/Guelph throughout the week but I’ll definitely be in London next weekend, coming on Friday evening then leaving Sunday around afternoon time. I’d love to get together with you guys and play some.

Think about this game as a team game though man. Saying Sentinal is free is bullshit. Sure, he is maybe not that hard 1v1, but his assist literally makes any team in this game go up one or two tier levels. Furthermore, DHCing into Sentinal off any hyper immediately puts you into some of the most damaging combos in the game. That alone makes sentinal one of the best characters, and not “free”.

Like, I don’t think Sentinal has the same “problems” he did when the game first came out as being OP, but calling him free is a gross understatement.

Taskmaster is better than Sent.

top 3 imo:
Phoenix
Task
Sent

He’s definitely tough when in the right hands but he’s nowhere near as OP as everyone makes it sound. Reason I said that is because I’m seriously sick of hearing everyone claiming he is.

The main difference between Sentinal and Phoenix:

  1. Lose to Sentinal
"Damn, I’m stupid how did I get hit by that"

  2. Lose to Phoenix
"Wtf was going on I couldn’t see anything and my life was gone"

Losing to sentinal is your own fault, Phoenix most of the time you are just fucked lol.

Care to enlighten me on haggar rather than just saying I’ve never seen a good one? My bro plays haggar since day 1 he is pretty solid but I now know all his tricks. Sure if you slip up even for a second you are toast but he’s real easy to avoid. Just don’t walk into lariats or lvl3 and ur golden. I’m giving you actual reasons But all I hear is you’ve yet to play a good one. I saw nickcam haggar he was real good but haggar is like fish in a barrel when he doesn’t have the life lead and if he does his keepaway is abysmal.

As for taskmaster I think you may be overexcited about how good trite is. Think logically about it what tools does task have that no1 else does? Not a lot.

Another factor we seem to all be forgetting is Sentinel is SOOO main stream that most ppl will naturally learn to deal with his tactics. Like as soon as we see a Sent on screen most of us know what to expect.

Sorry didn’t meant to come off brief or condescending like that, I was in a rush to get done so I can go to work.

Well my Haggar needs a ton of work and is far from being good but I have a general understanding of his potential. Running away form him isn’t as easy as it sounds because his wavedash is incredible. A Haggar who can predict where you’ll land from playing super-jump keepaway will be standing right next to you no matter where you land and that’s exactly where Haggar wants you to be (obviously with fly characters this becomes a lot harder). All his normals are top notch and have different hitboxes for different situations for example, his headbutt is an excellent air-to-air alternative to pipe and his dropkick/splash have a hitbox extending all across his body with active frames throughout. Baiting unsafe blocks for grabs or piledrivers is also another tactic I use for people who like to push-guard me away and altering the timing of your pipe works well too. Neutral jump + pipe will stop an opponent who likes to try and beat your pipe with a jump-in. Oh yea, his jumping light attack stuffs a ton of things.

Again these are all very basic tactics, stuff you probably already knew about, but combining them together really puts the pressure on and makes it difficult to deal with him. There are more things that I do subconsciously in a match that I can’t think of at the moment but hopefully this gives you an idea on where I’m coming from.

As for Taskmaster, it’s more than just Trite’s that made me figure how tough he is. I fought several Taskmasters and came to this conclusion. He’s a very well balanced character that has excellent keep-away and a great close range game, does a ton of damage, and has above-average HP. His easy-to-do combos deal anywhere from 40-70 percent damage and that’s just with the basic mighty swing combo that I see most Tasks do. He can almost trade projectiles as well as Arthur, counter anything Zero does with his jumping medium, and gives my Haggar a hard time with his keepaway. I guess the reason I say this is because so far, he’s been the hardest character for me to figure out how to fight properly.

GHETTO

Just gonna post this here to make sure everyone sees it

i played a pretty creative haggar a couple times, he’d use his sweep (c.H i think) which puts him in a grounded state, then he’d roll towards me or smthg silly. he used it really well. that dashing command grab also makes getting in a blockstring by him very scary.

and hibikster, tasky seems a bit like a better gouken eh? have you tried hulk against tasky? i like how gamma wave/tsunami eats through arrows, armoring many of his approaches, and punishing random supers w/ gamma crush. plenty of stamina too to eat some chip w/ those annoying arched arrows, waiting to time a nice gamma wave/tsunami. tasky is a really solid character though, his combos are fkin long and discouraging like zero’s, except tasky can actually do good damage.

I already mentioned his cr.H whiffing shenanigans above. You can see it coming from a mile away. Only purpose it serves is mixing up someone who is just coming on the screen, and that’s only if you time it perfectly and have a proper projectile assist. By itself it’s pretty much useless after you’ve seen it once.

The command grab tick is useless if you do advancing guard properly as well.

I’ve said it before Haggar’s entire game revolves around landing a lead pipe. You have a year and a half to hit confirm into w/e you want, it’s safe on block, has a high priority and gigantic hitbox. If you keep this in mind you shouldn’t be losing to Haggar ever.

Hibikster you are Ra’id right? I remember you making a comeback in that waterloo tourney w/ Haggar after (you guessed it) nailing the point character and assist w/ lvl3 XF lead pipe -> super. I know it was a sweet comeback and it explains the Haggar love but sooner or later you will wake up and smell the coffee.

Yes that is me Bruce. But my progress in this game from then vs. now has improved drastically. You keep referring to that one vid of me playing which is fair but I learned many more things with my chars and learned to make my team mesh that much better so expect to see stuff from me that wasn’t there in that vid.

And for the record, the momentum change was when I closed in on Taskmaster and did my level 3 from a ground roll, then weakening Wolverine with the pipe and then getting thrown only to roll backwards and do a lariat which hit the assist then do super which hit both chars.

I’ll be in London this weekend. If you want to get together and play, I’ll be more than happy to. I’m sure we can learn a lot from each other.
