List your favorite comic book artists

If we’re going to bring manga into this (buy some real comic books, you un-American bastards!), I’ve always had a soft spot for Toriyama’s style. He’s a lot more versatile than a lot of people are probably willing to give him credit for, and his work is instantly recognizable. You can learn a lot about drawing action–both comedic and dramatic–from reading his stuff.

Incidentally, Carl Barks is another example of an excellent writer/artist. Comedy is very difficult, but he was always unfailingly able to both write a good gag and execute it perfectly through his artwork.

The Walking Dead (Tony Moore)
Power Pack (Gurihiru) - I don’t hate the new artist, but his style sure as hell doesn’t fit with the nature of the series. I hope to hear the old artist duo come back for the next project

and that’s about all I keep up with

joshua middleton, joe mad, and paolo rivera(yall probably never heard of him, but honestly i like him better than alex ross, and im not saying alex ross sucks because he’s excellent, but i like paolo rivera’s style over his)

I didn’t see Sal Buscema yet. He that bad?
One of my fav comics is ROM and he did a better job than Steve Ditko. IMO :frowning:

Lesean Thomas
Khary Randolph
Alex Ross
Greg Horn
Skottie Young
Joshua Middleton
Corey Lewis (Reyyy)
Susan Luo
Jeff Matsuda
Greg Titus
Alvin Lee
Fabian Nicieza

Sal Buscema is great. He’s one of my favorite Spidey artists. When I was a kid, he drew Spectacular Spider-Man. That was some good stuff, and it still looks good today.

Paolo Rivera is cool. He did some Spider-Man with Paul Jenkins. I want to check out those Mythos comics when they make a TPB.

Jimmy Cheung has been doing work for a while, now, I think. I’m pretty sure he used to draw an X-Men comic back in the '90s. He just improved a lot ever since the CrossGen days. Marvel just called him a “Young Gun” because it made for good marketing, I suppose.

cheung needs to get back on young avengers. doesn’t heinberg know that cheung needs at least 2 months to draw one issue? watch YA not come out til next year at the earliest.

I’d agree in the sense that his drawings were better, but nobody told a Spidey story like Ditko did. To me, the Lee/Ditko characterization of Spidey is still definitive to this day.

I definitely agree with that.
Sal Buscema’s Spider-Man was good, though in it’s own right.
It’s not fair to measure every Spider-Man artist with a Ditko yardstick.

And, by the way, manga definitely counts as comics… Just think of it as comics done by artists from a different country… It’s the same thing, just in a different place…
Granted, some manga are just garbage, just like comics are, but, there’s quality stuff coming from there, too…

I like Toriyama, too, but his older works, like Dr. Slump, I think are drawn better, and focus on more comedy, which I think he does best. Dragon Ball (no Z) is good too, but after that, it all went downhill.

Jim Lee
Joe Mad
Ed McGuiness
Romita Jr.
Alex Ross

My favorites are Jim Lee, Alvin Lee, J. Scott Cambell, and David Seidman.

Manga artists for me.

Nobuhiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin) - Obviously since he created Sagara Sanosuke, my favorite anime and manga character and where my net name comes from lol! What I love about him is how much he loves a lot of the same things I like, Marvel, DC, Capcom, SNK, Evangelion, etc. You can see it in many many of his character designs. His new work Busou Renkin is also great and he did character designs for Samurai Showdown V too.

Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) - Hecould do an American comic book no problem, I’d love to see that.

Tetsuo Hara (Fist of the North Star AKA Hokuto No Ken) - I’m a HUGE fan of Fist.

Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) - He is just amazing at drawing buildings and machinery.

Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball) - Much like others have mentioned. If you get a chance look at his manga and the way he draws mountains and clouds, any kind of scenery period! The anime doesn’t do it justice. Though I don’t see how they could otherwise they’d still be drawing the show lol! Big up to the Super Dragon Ball Z game for trying to incorporate the look of the manga instead of the anime!

Ryoichi Ikegami (Mai the Psychic Girl, Crying Freeman, Spider-Man manga) - Another artist I can see doing an American comic very easily. Hell he already did with the Spider-Man manga which is just great!

Kentaro Miura (Berserk) - Man this guy does an insane amount of detail.

Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, Inu Yasha) - Admittingly I like her story telling more than her artwork but her drawing isn’t bad either. She’s one of the greatest writers on the entire planet IMHO so I just have to give her a nod.

Eiichiro Oda (One Piece) - I love the way this guy can do some crazy foreshortening and make it look believable. I’m still suprised that they are able to make that work in the anime too. This is actually very hard for an artist too accomplish and make it look good.

Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) - Obviously I have to mention him lol! His character designs always look better than the anime versions. It’s hard for me to put my finger on why but I think he draws children a little smaller than they are in the anime.

Itoh Mami (Various Capcom manga) - She’s my favorite Capcom manga artist, mainly because she’s touched everything from SF2, SFA, to DS 1, 2, 3, and even Warzard AKA Red Earth! And I just love her drawing style.

Masahiko Nakahira (Various Street Fighter manga) - My second favorite Capcom manga artist but he only deals with Street Fighter. Still it’s amazing how much influence his manga had on the games - He created Satsui No Hadou Ryu (AKA Evil/Dark Ryu) and Karin; Capcom liked them so much they incorporated them into the games.

Syuun Matsuena (Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi) - I got into checking out this manga recently after playing the game and watching the anime lol! He has some great character designs and the fight scenes are pretty awesome!

Kia Asamiya (Silient Mobius) - He did Batman Child of Dreams!!! And he drew Uncanny X-Men too for just a bit. He almost did a back up Chun-Li story for Studio Udon but sadly things didn’t work out, ah man I would of loved to of seen that but ohs well.

And I know I forgot a crap load of people ack…

the kubert brothers will always hold a special place in my heart. I loved there run on xmen in the 90’s and a few others.

Now I’m really enjoying Ramos Work in Xmen. I like that style… almost cartoony yet still able to convey some serious emotion when needed.

George Perez. He was mentioned already but only once and he deserves to be mentioned again. ‘Infinity Gauntlet’!!!, ‘The New Teen Titans’. ‘Crisis’ for cryin’ out loud!!!

Y tambien es Boricua! :lovin:

SleepWalker

I agree. His earlier stuff was much cartoonier and more expressive, but he started drawing much more densely and more squared-off around the time that Freeza was introduced into DB. By the time that particular arc was finished, it seemed like the sense of fun was sucked out of his drawings.

Jack Kirby
Jim Lee
Joe Kubert
Stephn Platt
Frank Miller
Ron Lim

just finished reading Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. mike mignola is the damn king of heavy black shadowing and is now officially one of my favorite artists.

i dunno if anyone’s mentioned him, but

You can add Ethan Van Sciver to my list. Amazing amount of detail in Sinestro Corps.

and he pencilled Impulse for a while, so you gotta love that!
