List your favorite comic book artists

Yeah, Wake Up is one of the best there is.

Damn, I don’t like to feed the trolls…but, damn. I just have to resist the urge. You’re fucking lucky I’m in a good mood. EVO East made me happy once again.

Anyway, my list:

Matt Wagner
Jim Lee
John Romita Jr.
Joe Mad
Chris Bachalo
Steve Epting
Alex Maleev
Leinil Francis Yu
Rags Morales
Carlos Pacheco
George Perez
Alex Ross
Greg Land
Mark Bagley
Ed Benes
Tony Daniel
Tim Sale
Jim Steranko
David Finch

Probably a shitload that I’m missing, but that’s a pretty solid list for me.

yu
turner (what can i say? i liked his art in the supergirl arc. does that make me a pedo?)
jim lee
jimmy cheung
david finch
hitchy (heh)
epting
benes is ok i guess
land (even if he does swipe his art)
jrjr

I’m not too familiar with him, but I was very impressed by his work on Superman: Secret Identity. That style of art would not work for 99% of superhero stories, but for Secret Identity, it was perfect.

I guess my favorite artists are also my favorite influences (In no real order):

Alvin Lee
Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
Craig Thompson (I love his brush work in Blankets and Goodbye Chunky Rice)
Joe Sacco (Palestine etc…)
Dave Gibbons
Joe Mad (Of Course. I love it when he does everything from the penciling to the coloring ie the first street fighter back up story)

oooo

and
Jim Woodring (Frank)
Bill Waterson (Calvin and Hobbes)

How could I forget, Terry Moore, his work in Strangers in Paradise is great, not only in art but his writing is top notch.

Mike Mignola
Jae Lee
Travis Charest
Toby Cypress
Alex Toth
Sergio Toppi
Claire Wendling
Enrique Fernandez
Nicholas De Crecy
Carlos Nine
Paul Pope
Will Eisner

His Superman with the huge “S” just gets to me, the model he uses has an ugly neck.

Superman isn’t supposed to look like someone’s grandpa. and none of the superheroes are supposed to look like fat people stuffed into poorly made halloween costumes.

what the fuck is that smear across batman’s chest?, and why doesn’t Batman have lenses in his cowl (Like he’s supposed to?), and why does he look like he’s worried all the time?

He certainly did advance toys about twenty years, and then, suddenly, he stopped making toys, and started making statues.

now, Toy Biz has advanced superarticulation beyond McFarlane’s dreams, and NECA has taken the ‘realism’ to an entirely different level.

both companies left McFarlane in the dust.

Yeah. Secret Identity, I say, is one of the best Superman stories ever. Immonen is just crazy good, though. He even colored Secret Identity himself. He changes his style based on the project. The stuff he did on Thor and Busiek’s Shock Rockets was kind of halfway cartoonish/halfway realistic. Then there’s stuff like his X-Men and Nextwave, which are really kinetic and cartoony. He’s just got a great sense of what works for a story. They got him drawing Ultimate Spidey when Bagley leaves.

Painy, you’ve just reminded me of another artist whose work I don’t dig.

I’m just not down with Greg Land. I liked his Nightwing comics, but he peaked with Sojourn. It’s not that his (swiped) art looks terrible… It just hardly ever serves the story. It’s so distracting how every chick looks like a generic porn chick. And his action scenes are kind of static. They might make good posters, but sequentially they don’t really connect with me.

This is old, but it’s a classic.

And I’ll never forget the time I was reading that Fantastic Four run and Millar had one of the characters call someone an old hag. But the way Land drew the “hag” was like some hot chick. That’s just… silly. I hate when the art just blatantly contradicts the script.

Funny. Most people lately have been complaining when the “S” is too small.

I won’t say anything about the ugly neck thing, as I feel I am not an informed judge of neck beauty. I will take your word for it.

Superman might not be supposed to look like someone’s grandpa, but (much of the time) he is meant to look like somebody’s father. He usually doesn’t look too fat… just big. Like, farm boy big.

I like alot of older artists,
JACK KIRBY
He basically started alot of the coolest Marvel super heroes we still have around.
Steve Ditko
Spiderman, of course, and Dr. Strange… draws very believable settings and characters in my opinion.
Joe Shuster
Original and best Superman artist.
John Romita
Drew alot of great stuff for marvel in the 60’s
Jack Cole
Creator of Plasticman.
Milton Caniff
Drew Terry and the Pirates and Steve Canyon, which were both great newspaper strips.
Noel Sickles
Mostly an illustrator, but drew a great strip called Scorchy Smith.
Alex Toth
He just brings the awesome all the time.
Chester Gould
Invented Dick Tracy.
There are definitely more I like, but I’ll end here for now…

As far as newer artists, I like
John Romita Jr.
Tim Sale
Jordi Bernet
Jason
A cool Scandinavian artist that gets some stuff published in the US.
David Mazzuchelli
That’s all I can think of for now…

As far as manga, I like
Katsuhiro Otomo
Akira
Osamu Tezuka
Buddha, Astro Boy, tons of other great comics
Go Nagai
Getter Robo, Devilman
Tohru Fujisawa
GTO
Naoki Urasawa
Monster, Plato

There are definitely more here too, but this is good for now…

Oh by the way, if you’re unfamiliar with any artists anybody has mentioned, but interested, go here:
http://www.art4comics.com/comicart.htm
it’s got tons of samples of artists’ work.

Cool picks. A lot of people look down on that 60s stuff, because it looks so sketchy by today’s standards, but look at the kind of visual storytelling these guys were able to do through such primitive printing technology. They also deserve a lot of credit for writing the stories they worked on. All Stan Lee would have to do was give them the gist of the story he came up with, and Ditko and Kirby would be able to draw the whole thing.

And Ditko also came up with some great characters on his own, like Mr. A and The Question.

Damn right.

Lessee…

Carl Barks
Don Rosa
Jill Thompson
Mike Weiringo
Chris Bachalo (some stuff)
Tim Sale

Bryan Hitch
Brian Bolland (awesome fucking covers)
John Byrne (some stuff)
Dave Gibbons
Marc Shultz
Terry Moore
Adam Hughes
Jim Mahfood
Evan Dorkin
John Cassady
Mike McKone
Clayton Henry
Art Adams (some stuff)
Dave Cockrum

I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Lol can’t believe I forgot about my Duck atrists. :lovin:

You know, I also forgot to say that Pat Lee sucks. I saw some recent issues of Superman/Batman… How the heck does that guy still manage to get work? Not only is he a crappy artist, but according to news sites, he’s screwed other artists out of getting paid. And he doesn’t even draw everything himself.

Oh yeah, and I don’t like Tom Fowler’s art, either.

ashley wood(s?)

I definitely agree… They are awesome…

Basically, the point is, there are too many good artists to remember all the ones you like at once…

Yeah. Daan jippes is a pretty good artist too for Donald and crew, he’s done lots of great covers over the years.

When I get a free minute I’ll post up some of the manga artists I like. It will take me a while since I don’t remember everyone’s name or the correct spelling for everybody off hand.

Authur Adams hands down.
This guy’s artwork was way ahead of its time and his influence can easily be seen in many other artists’ work.

Mark silvestri ranks up there as well. He’s kinda inconsistant though. Sometimes his artwork is jaw dropping other times it looks like he didn’t give a damn.

Alan Davis. This guy’s style is just amazing to see and it still holds up over the years. Always solid, always consistant and his compositions are so strong they can tell the story without any dialogue.

Mark Bagley: Guy knows how to tell a story. I grew up on this guy’s Spider-Man. He’s just got a really clean-cut style.

Greg Land: Not really liking his Marvel stuff as of late, but back in his Sojourn days this guy drew some spectacular backgrounds.

Mike Turner: Yeah the guy draws one comic every 6 months and he’s a lacking a bit in the storytelling department, but this guy definitely knows how to draw a cover.

Jim Cheung: He was doing Young Avengers for a bit. He’s fairly new on the block but it looks like he’s off to a good start. Looking forward to more work from this guy.
