Ling Xiaoyu Thread

How do you do Xiaoyu’s dive kick?

QCF+Kick

No the other one.

just to throw it in if you didnt know… you can kick away projectiles while in rain dance
light sends it straight back; mediums sends it diagonally forward and heavy straight upwards

Don’t forget that the light version has the least startup.

Dat Xiaoyu technology

How fast do you have to dash cancel? I keep having a problem with it but maybe it is because I don’t have the timing down…

So… at least for now it seems like Xiaoyu’s pressure game is very good. I played a lot over the weekend at Super Arcade in Walnut, CA. Just name-dropping it in case anyone is near the area and has never been.

Some thoughts:

  • Shooting Star (qcf + K) being +3 on block actually works out to Xiaoyu’s favor. Once people know they can’t punish it with a reversal because it’s safe, they just try to poke afterwards, which allows you to hit with quick normals like cr.LK, cr.LP, st.LP. Cancel into Fortune Cookie (qcf + HP), and if it gets blocked, you can stop at the second hit (which is 0 on block and ends in RD) or follow through with the entire Fortune Cookie which is -3 on block and has decent pushback to help you avoid a punish.

  • California Roll on your opponent’s wakeup is decent. If your opponent is not rolling forward off knockdowns, it’s very useful. Cross them up with California Roll and either throw or do Turn of Fortune xx AOP > Phoenix Talon. I feel like California Roll is actually more useful when your opponent is standing, just risky because I believe you can be hit out of it (except on EX).

  • Tag Xiaoyu in during blockstrings for long blocked specials (I was using Chun’s HK Spinning Bird Kick which keeps hitting for a long time) and mix up high/low. If you do it early enough, I think Chun hits long enough for you to try Xiaoyu’s cr.LK as well as her overhead in the same blockstring.

  • Something I have wanted to try is to see if you can tag in your partner during Double Map Sweep (preferably HK or EX version since they hit 3 times). Will you have time to overhead while Xiaoyu is sweeping to set up an unblockable, MvC3 style?

  • If Turn of Fortune gets blocked and you still end in AOP instead of in RD, Xiaoyu ends up close to the opponent and can’t block in AOP stance (if you end it in RD instead, she backs up and is kind of far, giving you a little bit of room to breathe if it gets blocked). If you have the meter to burn, you can try to Phoenix Talon and Tag Cancel to avoid a punish.

  • Can anyone confirm that LK Phoenix Talon is +3 on block?

It says so in the guide.

Yes I know it says that… can anyone confirm that it’s unpunishable in-game lol. Because it just doesn’t seem right. That would mean there is no risk for using it since if it’s blocked, it’s safe.

The guide was wrong about other things (like her Shooting Star being +13 when it’s actually +3), so I am wondering if maybe it is not actually +3 because that would make it stupid good.

Like I said in the other thread it is +3 on block if they are dumb enough to remain standing for the whole thing.

California roll during wakeup isn’t horrible but it isn’t amazing either. You have to do it really late to make up for the fact it won’t catch forward roll. I guess it can technically but you will always be at ~ -5-7 frame advantage due to her roll being 32 frames. That and she has like 3 hard knockdowns. Her okizeme in general is pretty weak, but then again so is everyone else’s.

I’m really struggling using Xiaoyu against characters like Ryu. I knowit should be easy but I just can’t seem to get in. Can anyone offer any advice since there’s so many Ryu players out there.

Nope, the game has some kind of anti-unblockable system that auto-guards unblockable attempts. Best thing to go for would be a high/low mixup timed shortly after the blockstun from the sweeps end. She’s a great character for setting up safe tags definitely though

Hmm, so it’s theoretically only an unblockable if you hit high and low at the same time. What if you overhead between the sweeps then?

Shooting Star over fireballs, use LK Mistrust (LK during Rain Dance) to reflect projectiles (doesn’t work on EX projectiles). Use Back Layout cancel to dodge projectiles. Some projectiles can even be ducked under during Phoenix Stance.

If what CriminalUpper says is true, that would not work unless the sweeps aren’t a true blockstring.

I tested a few, and it seems she can duck under any projectiles that is around hadoken height or higher. This would mean that the only projectiles I can think of that AOP can’t duck under are Sagat Low Tiger Shot, Juri light Fuhajin, and Toro Hadoken.

Online, usually, if I go against a projectile person, I would say your best bet is to just go to AOP and wait it out until they come to you. It is rare that the opponent will just spam projectiles for the whole 99 seconds for a draw (except me lol, I don’t care about a draw, so I’ll spam kikoken for 99 seconds lol xP)

Poison’s fireball doesn’t travel fullscreen but it is very tall so you can’t duck under that one either.

I think I had a hard time ducking under Sonic Boom but maybe I’m remembering wrong.

Anyway, you switch from stance to stance, so you could reflect a few in RD, then duck a few in AOP if you wanted. Just to keep your opponent on his toes.

Also, if you use EX Mistrust to reflect a projectile, it travels back REALLY FAST.

I couldnt find this anywhere so ill ask. Is there any way to cancel her stances while on the ground?

Was messing around with xiaoyu a bit today, couple things I’ve noticed.

  • AOP can be cancelled to any of her normal specials such as X mark the spot (Hakkesho), Shooting star, storming flower and fortune by doing d,db,b,ub+K to do shooting star from AOP, d,db,b,ub+P to do Hakkesho and d,df,f,uf+P to do storming flower or fortune. You can even throw from AOP but it doesn’t have more range.

  • Just like her tekken counterpart, RDS to throw has more range than regular throw. I was able to do jab, cancel to RDS and throw and it connected whereas if you do a jab and try throw it’ll whiff. So you can experiment and try stuff like Fortune to throw, close MP RDS to throw etc.

Hey guys, someone wrote this basic guide.

What do you guys think?
