Light-up on activation button mod tutorial

I remember NiteWalker asking about the possibility of KNserts for the new 24mm transparents. I can’t find the original question, so I figured I’d just reply here.
I’ve got one of them in my hand now, and I think I’m going to have to pass. It’s a well made little button, but I can’t figure out a way to do it in a way I’d be comfortable with. Anything I think off would interfere with the buttons’ operation, and I dont want to do that. I really think the only way for it to be smoothly done would be to use a flat topped 3mm LED, and use modelling glue to glue the flat to the bottom next to the microswitch and turn the whole housing into a light pipe.

It’s cool man, thanks for seein if it was possible.

Are you talking about using conventional LEDs at the end of your post?

Yeah I was, but I can’t find any bright white LEDs that have a flat surface for glueing to the body. For right now, I don’t know of any way to light them up I could geel confident about.

It’s a bit tedious, but I know led’s can be sanded down a bit. Not sure if it affects anything though.

Does anyone have a pic of “red” 3mm LED’s in action with a FGWiget board? Trying to guage how bright those get since I have been told there is a diffrence in brightness with Red led’s compared to others. I’m 50 / 50 on this one for my next build.

LEDs have different brightnesses, even if other characteristics are the same. Red, 3mm round LEDs listed on digikey as in stock vary from from 1mcd to 7,000 mcd (7 candella) at the same 20mA current. I’m not too sure about the low end, but I think that ranges from ‘I’m not sure its on’ to ‘HOLY FUCK I’M BLIND’.

Thank you Toodles. I’ll stick to what I have but for some reason I’m getting impulsive and will prolly purchase some KNinserts with red PS-14-KN’s.

you make a logo for yourself yet? Swear 80% of my builds components are from your make.

See here.

thanks!

Offer to send out stickers for a SASE still stands; they’re also included in all of the PS3 and MC Cthulhu’s going out.

I can’t get my widget to turn on when I plug into my computer…all buttons are reconized but no lights light up. When I plug into playstation or xbox (dual modded stick) they light up when I push a button only. Also if I unplug the unit from the ps3 or xbox then plug it back in , they no longer light up. I don’t get whats going on here , any help?

Sorry for the poor quality video.
But here it is the Sparky Jr. in action and being updated via FTDI

soldered up

oh… …also
if you are looking for something to do with those spare arc-eyes
there is one under my joystick dust shield (too bad i broke the smoke clear one LOL)

and everything is open source! and we intend to keep it that way.
the brd and sch files are available in the svn. so it the code for the chip and the inteface.

behold! open source

now i need a ftdi cable. i think i have one or my buddy does. gotta look for the darn thing in my box of cables

one day an implementation with usb bit whacking will be optimal

so toodles, for the fgwidget board, i wire the X_IN from the signals. so where do i with the GND from the LED(Arceyes)? i assume some GND or signal from button??? i am slow this afternoon. been modding all night and more on sticks so brain juices are flowing so well lol

EDIT: nevermind…i answered my own question

Just hook up VCC of FGWidget LED Controller to VCC Terminal of your Console PCB.
Just hook up Ground of FGWidget LED Controller to Ground Terminal of your Console PCB.

To wire up the FGWidget with the Buttons:
Signal of your Button will go to _IN of FGWidget LED Controller.
Anode of LED will go to _OUT of FGWidget of LED Controller.
Cathode of LED will to go Ground.

So, what do people want to see from an RGB controller as far as light patterns go? I’m totally looking for input since the ripple on the FGW LED controller was very popular. Modes I’m thinking of at the moment:

  • Similar rotating cylon mode, but the color of the pulse slowly changing between color, so like during one rotation it would slowly shift from red to orange, next rotation from orange to yellow, and so on down the ROYGBP colors.
  • a mode where each button has a color, and lesser versions of that color spread out and mix. So if Short was Red and Fierce was Yellow, and those buttons were held, then short would be red, fierce would be yellow, Strong and Roundhouse would be a more yellowish Orange (since they’re one button from the yellow and two buttons from the red) and Jab and Forward would be a more reddish Orange (since they’re one button from the red and two buttons from the yellow). If just Short was pressed, then Short would be a bright red, Jab and Forward would still be red, but not as bright, and Strong and Roundhouse would be a very very faint red.
  • On press, cycle through colors from faint Red up through a bright Purple to finally white, like three seconds for the full color shift to white, brightening as it goes. On release, reverse the pattern back to off.
-First press will cycle the color for that button from black to Red, second from Red to Orange, and so on through YGBP to white and back to black. The colors stay put on release.

Other than that, I’m low on ideas. So what would y’all like to see?

As suggested previously, maybe working together on this approach.
The hardware exists, the software exists, the interface exists… …you know, collaborative contribution.

The offer was extended, the SVN is shared, everything is kept open, creative commons.
The offer still exists. As does an RGB controller. The arduino shield has been around the arduino community.
The standalone exists in multiple formats. and Sparky is installed in running strong in many controllers, projects, art installations.

@toodles
As said before and againa, and keeping it true (no riffs). We are open to community. The offer is open!!!

did that and buttons light up on press. but no screensaver and no menu when i hold jab. all buttons light up on press though so ummmmmm…stumped.

EDIT: tournament mode works. i did the three punch and three kick. its wierd. the first one i did worked like a charm and that was my test stick lol any ideas anyone?
