Just got off the phone with Gamer’s Paradise. They said that Weekdays are best for them and that they would need to charge a venue fee but they would try to accomidate a low cost if possible.
Does 3 dollars venue, 7 entry sound amicable to you guys? That’s what I’m going to try and sell them on. That way our pot is big and our venue is small. It would also allow the person in first to always make money, the person in second to break even at 7 entrants, and the person in third to break even at 14 entrants.
If this doesn’t work I can start looking around at other places.
I’m really really really hoping this goes somewhere. If I can be of assistance in anyway then let me know. I’d love to make some more friends that are into Skullgirls.
Weekdays is a bit of a bummer, but it’s miniscule in the grand scheme of things. I’m still in there if I can catch the bus. Hopefully the tournaments end sooner rather than later. Not a big fan of hauling a PS3 around at 12AM for 30+ blocks haha.
Likewise
I’ll haul my PS3 out there if I can show up.
Edit: Oh damn I’m gonna need a slim now that I think about it lol.
LOCAL BATTLES IN FORT LEE ARE RUNNING TOURNAMENTS WITH NO VENUE FEE TOMORROW (Monday 10/22). THEY WILL PLAY ANYTHING… ANYTHING!!! AS LONG AS YOU CAN GET EIGHT ENTRANTS TO THE TOURNAMENT!!!
This is a good time to prove that the SG community is still alive. GO AND REQUEST SKULLGIRLS!!! All we need is eight people EIGHT PEOPLE! If we can’t get that many to come out and show support, starting up weeklies might be a lost cause. SO COME OUT!!!
Protip for getting a scene going from someone that helped foster a fledgling garage arcade become a legendary fixture of the fighting game scene basically turning the place from 4 guys into a place that got overloaded with 40 people at its peak times.
My friend who runs dons arcade in torrance had a room full of old fighting game cabinets and a console or 2 with sf4 in his garage. He had no one coming to his free to play event though. He asked me how to get more people to come, this is what i told him and how we went from 4 people when i came in to 40 people in less than 2 months time:
I told him he had to be consistent with the days of It being open to the public and there had to be a consistent start and closing time.
2 i told him that getting a top player to come consistently would also attract other gamers… Being a friend of a future top 8 evo finalist, and someone that won one of those coveted gold madcatz sticks, i invited shizza over and he came regularly. The combination of him and all the available games and the place being open consistently plus me telling all my friends to go, plus don buying 4 console setups and 8 madcatz sticks, is what made the place explode.
So, yeah it doesnt matter if only 2 people are coming to your events, if you are in the fgc and have other fgc friends that may be even SLIGHTLY interested in sg, just let them know that you are having get togethers every week on like… Tuesday or friday…doesnt matter what day as long as its consistent.
Getting a top player to come out will be tricky, the way to do it, the way i did it was to get peeps in before inviting top player… Then hold a tournament that top player will most likely own and make some coin off of… Shizza won every tourny he entered at dons iirc.
Little extrathings were if you got 20 wins in a row at peak times you got free coke… Its these little things that people appreciate. And once you get more up to about 15 people regularly attending start charging 3-5 dollar venue fee to pay for power, cokes, chips controllers etc.
I firmly believe that if you do these things you will grow a community. People are consumers and are always looking for something to consume… Just dont post things last minute 1 day before or day of event and expect people to jump out the woodworks… It dont happen like that, also i was involved with wnf in its infancy at valles house to start so i also saw this strategy work with him and its actually how i knew what to tell don to do… Consistency and an open mouth and patience and atleast 2 people to play each other are all thats needed to grow your scene from the ground up.
The only reason why i dont do it is cause i am randomly away from home for long periods of time so i cant set a consistent venue and i dont have even 1 other player to pay against locally, thought thats small beans.
Case in point i have only 2 people that i play against in all of online australia yet we still all go hard at the game playing as much as we can… Even with only 3 people in our community.
I’ll try to make it over there but maybe it’s also worth mentioning this place called X Place Inc located in Newark, New Jersey? It’s just as you’d expect. Food and games. But I haven’t any idea about the pricing because their website seems to not be working right now. I’ve seen pictures of the place though and it looks pretty solid. Maybe it’s worth giving them a call and then heading over there sometime? You can still pull their phone number off goal easily.
If it were up to me, I’d hold meetups for any number of people. But its not. It’s up to the venue. Most venues want to make it worthwhile and that means more than X people showing up. LB, for example, needs 8. Many other venues need even more. So… I’d like to continue running events for 2 or 3 people, but for venues it comes down to the dollar. Everything is a business afterall. I don’t say getting weeklies is together is a failing proposition because there is no community. I say it’s a failing proposition because if you can’t get eight people together few venues will let you host.
No doubt man, have any of you guys thought of opening up your garage, or perhaps even your room/house to guests? It isnt the best thing in the world but it can get the ball rolling… Perhaps even a time when everyone in the jersey community will be online for some games? Sg is pretty good online below 50 ping… And if everyone is from jersey then you guys shouldnt be playing anythng over 50 ping…
I know it isnt a perfect solution, just throwing out random ideas, im all for any scene to grow skullgirls be it nj cali australia or europe…
I mean like i said, we the australian players have a “scene” that is completely online and i think consists of only 3-4 players max… Yet we still go pretty hard…
Hah, My room is the tiniest thing ever and i’ve already ran weekly meetups by my housemates who aren’t really totally into the FGC thing… no deal. Also I don’t have a garage. I live in an apartment ^_^. If anyone ELSE wants to do that though.
It is. I actually didn’t get notice until last night from Chris G… via Facebook of all things. So I didn’t even know. For that matter I’m unsure if I can even show up due to some unfortunate family problems including a hospital, but its worth a shot right!? How many times will we get opportunities like this?
Some equivalents to Salty Cupcakes in other parts of the country would be great for the game’s visibilty…I hope you guys can come up with something eventually
