Lets Bring Skullgirls to EVO 2016

No, but he is the creator of the whole Skullgirls, characters, story, etc.

the reason I haven’t touched the game yet is for 2 reasons

  1. is digital only
  2. it’s not my kind of game

The game looks like marvel or so they say I don’t like marvel or combo heavy games anyway. I like the art style and I think it was the right decision because no other game looks like this, it sure as hell looks way better than that ugly mess that was STHDremix. it’s like people complaining about KOF XIII sprites, saying they should have went the SFIV route and probably have more characters that way. but I stand firmly when I say SNK made the right decision because no other game looks like KOF XIII and that’s a big draw to attract new potential players. KOF XIV can be 3D but if snk don’t go for a style than differentiate from the competition I really doubt it will have the same impact as KOF XIII had.

Video games are a form of art, the fact that nothing looks like Skullgirls is a factor to its success not its detriment. Think of the successful fighting games today? They are all parts of long storied franchises that have been around forever and are made by major video game companies. KOF XIII (SNK), Marvel vs Capcom 3 (Capcom), Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (Namco), SF4 (Capcom), Guilty Gear Xrd (Arc), Smash Bros (Nintendo).

Skullgirls is made by a no name company, and is a new franchise. That it has its strong following is actually kind of a miracle.

I’m a bit torn on this issue to be honest.
I got into Skullgirls about a year ago at EVO 2014. It’s my favorite fighter now, and I’ve been working to get more people into it in the local game scene here. My fiance and I spent a good amount of time at the Skullgirls booth this year at EVO and talked to one of the developers. He made it pretty clear that Lab Zero is kind of burnt on working endlessly on the Skullgirls for the last five years, and want to focus energy on Indivisible and it’s campaign for now. As a creative person, I can understand the team wanting to expand their horizons. I think it would be best to let them have that time, and then let them come back strong with another crowdfunding campaign for Skullgirls, or even maybe a sequel. That’s when I think it could be time for Skullgirls to be a main tournament at EVO.

Would I like it to be at Evo? Hell yeah, I love this game. Could it be at Evo? Sure. Will it ever ACTUALLY be at Evo? I’m not so sure about that. Sure, it has its community/fanbase, but from my experience, a bigger chunk of the community is just people who like the art style and characters and music and lore and NOT so much the competitive nature of the game. You know, the casual side. Kinda like with Guilty Gear; people praise Ishiwatari’s work on the soundtrack and they play the game for the story and character designs. But at the same time, most of those people fail to get into the game tournament-style money-on-the-line super competitive. That said, this sect of the community almost definitely isn’t dedicated enough to the game to travel all the way to Vegas for a major e-Sports event where they know there will be hardcore, competitive players there to wipe them out of pools. That portion of the community that’s willing to go to Evo and compete in Skullgirls, assuming it ever did make main stage, just doesn’t seem big enough compared to the likes of Marvel, Street Fighter, Tekken, etc. It just doesn’t stack up to the “Evo Titans” in my eyes as far as participation goes, and so, in my opinion, it really isn’t warranted as anything more than a side tourney game, not a main stage event. If we’re talking views and the numbers of people tuned into the streams, that’d probably be another story.

I’ve got something coming on Friday.

Skullgirls is pretty bad tbh so don’t expect it at EVO.

Skullgirls doesn’t need to be a main event, it’s doing fine on it’s own. People crying when their game isn’t a evo main event are part of the problem. It’s not like being a main game is a badge of honor or a seal of quality anyway, so it’s an essentially meaningless honor. Ultimately what skullgirls needs isn’t a spot at evo but a community that goes deeper with the game, the top 8 this year had matches that were not really a showcase of quality, not hating on anyone’s performance but the ceiling is much higher up in some cases. If its ever reached by a dedicated community maybe people can bitch then.

People need to stop waiting for attention from EVO and the SF scene to grow their favorite games.

Luckily the SG community realizes this and decided not to have its biggest tournament of the year at EVO(there was a bigger tournament at Combo Breaker this year).

OT, but does Lab zero know how to pick composers or what? Michiru Yamane for Skullgirls (composed soundtrack for all the Iga Castlevanias, including SOTN). Now Hiroki Kikuta, the composer of Secret of Mana (maybe my favorite soundtrack of all time, or at least among them).

A few things when talking about Skullgirl playerbase and tournaments

  1. It is much smaller than Street fighter and the other big tournament games. Only a small percentage of a fighting game’s population will be serious tournament players. So a small percentage of a much smaller size population.
  2. The playerbase is maybe the youngest of all fighting games which means many don’t have the means to travel to big tournaments.
  3. Though available in Japan, there hasn’t been an official arcade release.

Uhhh, no.

Yeah I know there has been loctests, but has it been officially released in arcades? I haven’t heard any news of this.
