Lessons that playing Fighitng Games Have Taught you

If you try to start kicking people far enough away for them to see it coming, they’ll parry every hit of that shit and knock your ass out. In day-to-day life, this piece of knowledge has gotten me out of several jams.

…oh.

ive learned that when in a situation where older versions of yourself dont have quick recovers you can pursuit those mutherfuckas all day!

This thread makes my head hurt (possibly just lack of sleep, granted), basically you type a big long thing that’s purely common sense.

So for anyone not wanting to read his post I’ll sum it up for you here:

Think outside the box.

Don’t be too cocky.

It ain’t over to the fat lady sings.

Become one with the game.

Thank you, that is all.

Patience and staying calm under pressure…but yet at the same unleashing your fighting spirit at its fullest. :nunchuck:

Similarly,

Don’t telegraph unless you’re a masochist.

you’d be surprised how many kn3wbz don’t understand these concepts or think they do, but not at the highest level.

Don’t throw things at people otherwise they’ll jump and kick u in the face.

Don’t jump at people when they throw things at you, unless you want them to nail your face with a flaming uppercut.

another lesson i learned…

when you punch somebody with a jab punch you can throw them for free… 80% of the time it works all the time

You don’t have to be the richest or have the most resources or have the fanciest background to do well. All it takes is knowledge, preparation, perserverance, and a little luck, and those are things everyone has access to.

Also, I’ve found (or, more accurately, reconfirmed) that I really, really like discovering, figuring out, and knowing things. There’s nothing like the process of problem --> study --> solution --> new problem to get my blood a-goin’.

lol. explain this to me, obi-wan

Again this has gotta be cause of lack of sleep, but for about twenty seconds I thought you were arguing the merits of the fancyness of your characters stage.

Everything’s pretty much been covered here, but here’s a good one.

Study by yourself and come up with your own shit just as much as you learn from better players/videos/forums. You will end up knowing much more about the game by learning the process as well as the solution. Come up with your own answers to your own problems. You just might get futher for the sole reason that you used some shit nobody’s seen or had to deal with.

All in all you will be better educated and have better experience by doing this.

One thing I do think people need to know is really, don’t get all bent out of shape about it in the end of the day, it’s a game, you play it because you like to play it. Everyone gets caught up in what you’ve won, who you’ve beat, and calling new players scrubs, hating on games you don’t play, etc.

If your going to be playing in tourneys and stuff, grow up, learn to let shit go, go home, do whatever it is else you do with your life, and don’t get all caught up in it.

I’m not saying talking trash is bad, or that you shouldn’t say anything back, but there are people who genuinely don’t serve to help anybody out with their attitudes, so I’ve learned it is best to put it into perspective, a loss is a loss, go practice, come back, play 'em next time, but certainly don’t let some idiot get in your head over trivial shit.

Think before you think of moving.

i think i’m not the only 1 who had noob stigmas on fighting games before he started to really play them:
i used to think fighting games reward pure time invested into them. means if X plays more than Y, X will be a better player. now i know it’s not true at all.
i used to think ‘playing to win’ is boring. now i know that ‘playing for fun’ is not really so “fun” when compared to the fun you can get from high level of play.
i used to think fighting games are all about memorizing and executing combos. now i know it’s only 1 of the most basics aspects, and that you don’t even “play the game” until you start learning what’s beyond that.

this article pretty much summed it up for me:

e.g.
a lot of the time, getting owned is a choice.

There’s nothing wrong with beating up a teenage girl, at least not if she starts it.
