"Learning" In an Online Session

I’ve tried everything I can to improve in SSF4, but not only do I not see the results, but I am also losing even more matches. So, I decided to go back to basics.

On my next Endless battle, I’ve decided to focus on 1 goal. That goal is not to win but to learn something.

But, if I’m starting from scratch? What should try to learn first?

  1. Play Offline. You’re in FL, shouldn’t be too hard to find people, right?

  2. Do nothing but block and tech grabs.

While playing offline is the preferred method, online training is fine for your level. I would focus on your characters normals, along with blocking and teching grabs. Having a solid understanding of all of your character unique normals is a good base to build up from. Whether you win or loose, try and evaluate what you did right/wrong. Rinse repeat.

You should get a mentor or something who can actually give you practical advice instead of asking for SRK to just bark out random advice at you that you may or may not need. Nobody here has seen you play so nobody knows what you need to work on first.

learn any fact about anything

If this is the first competitive fighting game you’ve ever played and decided to take it serious it will take you longer than most to learn. For that reason you should be using one and only one character all the time (or else you’ll keep forgetting things you learn and suck even longer), first learn things such as what moves you should use and when you should use them. Go into training mode and practice the basic combos, so for example learn the easiest combo for your character first and use only that combo for a whole week so that you memorize it and don’t mess up anymore, it will help you learn to use it under pressure. After that you can move on to a harder combo, keep playing and use your brain while playing don’t let your fingers do all the work by hitting random buttons. Keep playing and create your own strats to get better, also if you stated what character you are currently using it would help people who try to help you out.
