When the right arm/hand is at an ergonomic typing/playing position (a \ slant) and the fingers are slightly curved, the thumb is not below and to the left of the index but directly underneath. The only way for the thumb to align with LK on a Vewlix layout is if the elbow is tucked in. FYI, I don’t think using one straight finger is good for your hands. You’ll never see a piano player hit the keys like that. Take care of your hands, keep straight wrists, curved fingers, and soft touches as much as you can. I’ve heard of OG players getting carpal tunnel and some can’t play like they used to without pain.
And Japanese players do use the thumb. In your clip, he does it at 0:20 for I’m assuming a tech hit, since he’s swiping it across the buttons, and his layout is closer to Sega 2P. See Kurahashi at 0:50 in this other video when he’s inputting F. LP+LK, DF. LP+LK xx LK(+LP) lightning legs, he also uses his thumb:

I’m sure with kara throws a lot of Japanese 3s/IV players must use their thumbs.
yeah, kara throwing is the only exception I dont know if there is another option then using the thumb and still play effective.
This is street fighter 2 .
In SF4 you normally piano the lightning legs and end on HK, no thumb there.
But I dont want to start a big debatte, if you use your thumb, that’s ok . I dont, and Ive never seen someone doing it, thats why Im confused that all the button layouts seem to be designed for thumb play.
I rotate my right elbow to the right a bit and rest my ring finger on fierce, middle on strong, pointer on jab, and thumb on short. My hand is curved but comfy and I don’t normally have any problems hitting buttons as my hand and fingers move around alot. I use my ring and thumb for sf4 throws and moves that require ATK + S in Marvel 3. I use a vewlix but I have never tried a different layout
Man, if you hold your hand like that… you should try a SEGA 2p layout, just for kicks… you might not have to move your hand around as much.
This. I actually noticed it most when I used my first stick which was a SEGA 1p layout and felt like I always had to tuck my elbow into my body… then I saw the 2p layout and went “THAT MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE!”
All of you are going to think I am weird, I use my index finger for ALL SIX of the buttons >_> so it kinda looks like I’m poking around my fight stick. My other fingers are quite weak and lacking mobility and I can’t move them as fast as my brain tells them to. So I guess I naturally leaned to using index for everything. I also type on a keyboard with only my index fingers. Can’t type the normal way but I get 101 wpm so it works for me.
for PP or KK inputs, I use index+middle. for PPP or KKK I use index + middle + ring
P+K inputs I use index + thumb.
Perhaps for this reason, I don’t notice any effect no matter what layout I use. They all feel the same to me.
Don’t get me started on how I hold the joystick. I hold ball with only index and thumb.
Sako uses his thumb several times in that video. Presumably to Pushblock/tech hit.
My own two cents about panel layouts also allows for mostly personal preference. I’m 27, and have been playing fighting games hard for the past 7 years now, and can say, carpal tunnel does happen. Granted I do work a manual labor gig, so I’m sure I’ve worn my hands, joints and nerves twice as fast as the average button monkey. As a result, I can really tell which layouts work and do not work for me.
Personally, I am a huge fan of Atomiswave panel for finger comfort, since the buttons are so spaced out from the top to the bottom row.
The Vewlix layout however, is really comfortable on the wrist-- with this layout, my elbow tends to pull away from my body. Most every other layout will tend to draw the elbow into the body, which ‘scrunches’ wrist mobility for me.
The Namco panel is very unique in one respect, being that the Hard Kick (or Marvel2 Assist 2) is spaced differently than the rest of the buttons. With it being spaced outward, you are able to let the pinky finger trail out and be ready to drop that Psylocke/Commando assist without contorting the rest of your hand.
I have RSI issues also, and tend to prefer the Seimitsu Astro City 2P or Vewlix layouts for my wrist. Tim is doing a custom panel for me based on the Egret 3 layout I posted above, I’ll try to remember to let you know how it works out.
Funny though, I can’t remember where I got that scan. I’ve had it saved for a couple years. All of the other Egret 3 layouts I see look different, usually Atomiswave style. So I’m not sure that the one I have is an official layout at all, or if someone just put that on a blank panel.
