(Hunh. This thread actually didn’t get worse like the other. [/jinx])
I’m not sure if it was the fashion tangent–that white on red polka shirt is pretty atrocious though [/Bravo]–or people ganging up on Zatalcon civilly, but this thread didn’t implode like I was expecting it to. I see no reason to close it (for now). [/stay of execution]
Man, this graphic is really prejudiced against asexual people. [/only half-joking]
Still, it’s one of the most succinct graphics I’ve seen to “explain” things, especially given that people just outright ignore intersex people existing, so thanks for posting it I guess. I find it odd that it came from a site about metrosexuality though given that’s not even an actual sexuality. [/discrimination?]
I never said anything about wanting it to be stifled. I was just curious to know if there were any legitimate reasons to study it other than mere curiosity and a sexuality “issue” that is currently needlessly politicized. Given you answered there are indeed legitimate applied benefits from it other than inevitable lure of “hurray, I’ll have a definitely heterosexual child!”, I’m less against it than I was, even if I’m still uncomfortable about it and still don’t think it should be prioritized over very much else. That’s not “stifling” to me.
If I said that outright wanted to ban it or that I thought it shouldn’t be studied despite the potential other benefits it could yield, then, yeah, that would stifling. Examples of stifling would be what way too many Republicans are doing with climate change-related science or solar energy science or too many other things. While I don’t blame Einstein or anyone who worked at Los Alamos on the Manhattan Project for becoming death, destroyer of worlds, and causing the Cold War and the world we live in, at the same time, you can’t tell me that science is ever really divorced from potential misapplications.
I mean, I get that I’ll always be more cynical than thou, but for all its objectivity, science is always handled by beings who aren’t objective and that will remain as such until and probably even if we get around to making self-aware computers or robots (without destroying ourselves somehow). That’s why to me, as much as I think humanity as a whole should burn since we’re probably going to destroy ourselves in the next 30~ years anyway, I’m more for advancing science with general all-round benefits like looking for an Alzhemier’s cure or clean energy production. Those types of scientific research as opposed to either something with mostly fringe benefits that could still end up being politicized, like this type of research, or something that could be good for society but has huge risks, like, say, self-replicating (nano)technology.
Just clarifying my position.
Yeah, you did get kinda heated, but I’m pretty jaded to that in general; I’ll admit that I was annoyed I didn’t get to correct you about some things when you brought it up in the shooting thread, but it’s not like I got livid or anything. That’s part of the reason why I don’t agree about Serpent needing to banned, because people say cruel shit about tragic or sensitive things all the time; hell, I am one of the more insensitive people at times, so there’s that too.
I mean, I understand there’s a difference between saying intentionally cruel things and saying outright bigoted things obviously. This especially since people can say bigoted things due to sheer ignorance and not mean to cruel, as I believe is the case with both DrellyFish and Zatalcon in this thread for example (though I’m less sure about the latter). At the same time, it’s a really slippery slope to start banning people for saying something other people find “vile” or really ignorant. I mean, given all the way people casually use the word “rape” or talk about violence against anyone on here…yeah. You’ve been around long enough to know that SRK has never been Care Bears even if I agree it could be obviously be better in some respects.
The “freaks of nature” thing is rather bigoted no matter who it’s said about, but just because Serpent posts some BS about “your mom” doesn’t mean he should be taken seriously as was literally what he did to Cryoh…who responded like Serpent was being serious. I’m trying to be as objective as possible when there’s a rather nebulous boundary to what can and “can’t” be said outside of people yelling racial or sexual slurs at each other. I’m sure there’s a “happy” moderating medium, but to me at present the only other “real” option would be to be as draconian as possible and that would see too many people infracted or outright banned.
As for General Discussion needing another mod, oh, I definitely concur. As far as I’m concerned, it needs at least two more since GD was at its best when it had four-ish mods. Unfortunately, given you have been around nearly as long as I have, you’re likely aware that neither MrWizard nor The Cannons care much about GD. It’s rather the opposite, really, so I doubt it’s a (positively numbered) priority, especially since I’ve talked directly to those three people all of once.
Still, I encourage you and other people to try to get more mods who would actually care about GD to be installed because I’m technically not even a mod of GD. Despite being a mod for like…11 years already (geez), I’m the mod of Fan Fiction Forum, where Sano is more active than me.
Ever since that change to the new version of SRK, mods have been able to moderate any of the subforums. Given I’m seemingly the only mod besides Valaris to actually really care about GD to even try moderating…yeah. That also needs to change, prefer before the end of the year, if not August, but there’s only so much I can do myself.
TL;DR: I’d rather ban people for being consistently and offensively stupid than consistently merely ignorant or inarticulate. Also, yes GD really does need at least two more mods who actually be around, especially since there’s a decent chance I’ll be permanently gone after the end of this year.
As a queer (LGBTQ) person myself, gay male specifically, it makes me happy to see a member of our community being so successful and adding visibility to queer and trans issues. It’s awesome the amount of progress that is being made, and living in Pennsylvania with the recent marriage equality and the ban on discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity gives me hope for the future. Although many of the comments in this thread have made me upset, I know that things are going to continue to get better in time. I had the pleasure of seeing Laverne Cox speak at a college near me and her message was inspiring and empowering and I respect her.
Ms. Cox is amazing and beautiful and all the hateful comments say nothing about her, but say everything about the ones commenting.
(This is something I’ve been meaning to ask or look up, but never do and since I’m replying to someone else in here, I might as well ask…)
To those who know, what’s the difference between “transgender” and “transsexual”? There is a difference, right? I mean, I’m pretty sure this is part of where a lot, if not most people, get further confused by the issue, though I’m sure there are also a weirdly large amount of people who also get confused by “transvestite” with regards to those two terms.
You think more people would have been educated by Rocky Horror Picture Show or Twisted Sister about how “transvestite” has nothing to do with sexuality. …Although I suppose “transgender” technically has nothing do with sexuality either (right?), so I can perhaps see the continued confusion…
Which part of it? I’m guessing you mean the latter about my potentially permanent absence, but I want to be sure.
Depending on what you’re asking me to clarify, I may answer. It’s not guaranteed though.
From Wikipedia: “Transgender individuals identify with the umbrella term covering all gender identities or expressions that transgress or transcend (go beyond the limits of) society’s rules and concepts of gender (Transgender is a wide umbrella term also covering people who hold binary gender identities and expressions but who transgress gender by transitioning between the binary genders).”
Transsexual typically refers to individuals who do not identify with the sex that they were born with, and oftentimes feel as though they were born in the wrong body. They often seek to change their bodies through Sexual Reassignment Surgery or the use of hormones, and they fall under the Transgender umbrella. So Ms. Cox is a transgender person, more specifically a transsexual male to female so both terms are correct in referring to her.
I have also seen the umbrella term of transgender used to describe intersex, cross-dressing people, and non-binary individuals.
“Transvestite” is a word that doesn’t see much use anymore, and I have heard from some that it can be considered offensive. All it refers to though is somebody who cross dresses, nothing more.
Also on the use of the word “tranny”, it is mostly considered an offensive term and has negative connotations tied to it. It is not and shouldn’t be used to describe a transgender person.
Thinking of Rocky Horror makes me want to get up and do the time warp. ;D
MAtriarch back and talking about 'erself, while looking at us like the ant farm, you’re above and trying to control, or use in a thesis somewhere along the line as an example of degenerates, after you shake the place with ignorant trolling-claiming not to know the meaning of the word, especially from how you look at inner-city schoolkids as all poor minorities you have the mispleasure of being around, even for a very small amount of time sounding like you “can’t stand, /those/ kind of people”
instead of wasting your free time on America’s past time, beisbol–err-World of Fatcraft? Good. I realize I didn’t provide direct examples, and while some of that looks personal, I can’t really re-write it. Not a backtracker like some people where the followup looks even worse than the original in not getting it, forget assimilating at all.
Prob add something…
racists don’t support other racists to be racist, that are a different racist than they are
or do they…
this is why I ask matriarch directly to teach/psychologically(!) our young people and way too old people like a louiscipher and mechwarrior that they shouldn’t use racial slurs on here, or anywhere, even if you’re “angry” mech wasn’t even angry so its not even understood that way why that was his word choice, since it wasn’t even a humor attempt either but that of calling people plurally yes, directly out of any word he could have used instead.
but nobody in that triangle gives a shit to unlearn their ignorance. so fuck em.
Might touch on this somewhere else though. Its universally applied.
Even thought I told you this before-to no followup by you when it was recent news, fine maybe I didn’t provide direct examples, but its your own prerogative to want to keep up. I can’t make you.
if a mod or a staff: dev, wolverine master
are perpetrating stupidity out there from having no idea how to deal with women, or maybe human beings period, did you speak up about that?
Can you do it at all without being led directly to the issue, given a pamphlet or readings ahead of time on what to think, and what to say about it - anything else is wrong, under a group-hive-mind opinion yourself?
Talk about the role of the woman with her infedelity love triangle around Noel Brown at all, the cause?
or just laugh at the black dude gamer - - went to jail. Like kotaku told you to.
(arguably a little crazy - into fist flying too quickly trigger happy unstable emotional incidents before)
Are there places lacking hate crime charges around trans/gays, can you counteract the stupids with that?
No to both so far. sounds like taking from the worst shown/no direct involvement/no awareness of issues to me. but I’m not a 8.675% native american lesbian gamer girl researcher feminist downtrodden, so what would I know.
(At Lose-Control: Oh, so transgender is just an umbrella term. I suppose that makes sense. Ha at just getting it from Wikipedia anyway.
There being two or three different “trans-” words is also part of the reason I wouldn’t use tranny.)
@Manx (and others like @angelpalm, I guess): As for my possible, permanent absence, in order: Not as far as I’m aware, though my health has exactly been great as of late, so who knows; [REDACTED]; I’m still never getting married; I’ve still never slept with anyone.
It’s not terribly important overall. I just figured I would mention it given it was something I’ve been considering as of late for reasons I don’t want to get into and Spirit Juice has brought up legitimate points about the mod issue, even if I disagree with him about some things.
Regardless, GD does need more moderators anyway, especially since I’m beginning to suspect Valaris is that Canadian shooter since he’s just been gone for the past week. Not sure what the fuck is up with that.
Now to read through the entire Smash thread since I’m up all-night/morning and I promised someone I would. Sigh.
