There was actually pretty darn impressive parity at final round. In a game with only 16 characters, top 8 featured 8 different characters, that pretty amazing. And top 16 featured 12 different characters, only 4 missing from top 16 were Laura, Birdie, Dictator, and Rashid. Laura faired the best out of those 4 as at least wolkrone’s laura made top 32, I don’t believe the other 3 did. And Laura already has Mr. Crimson’s win to her name. This tournament definitely didn’t do Laura any favors in convincing people of her viability, but a top 17 finish in a 1,000+ man major tournament is still very respectable, especially one that featured many of the top players from around the world, and to my knowledge none of the favorites to win the tournament were running Laura.
Shout outs to the Laura representation indeed. I really don’t know what it is about Wolfkrone Laura but I was really feeling it. I missed most of the money match between him and FChamp. Didn’t even know Art was streaming until he was about to wrap up.
I’ll drop laura in april when guile becomes available. there are two reasons.
first one, playing charge characters for years takes its toll. I sometimes fuck up circle motions. I tend to bypass corners with stick, my inputs lack db or df motions. A st.hk comes out instead of command grab, problems with canceling standing normals into specials etc. The first reason is my lack of skill with motion characters.
second reason, Laura is not a reliable character imo. fun to play, yes. but lacks tools. for example everyone’s saying she has good antiair, but I don’t agree with that. yes, she has a fast st.mp. but it is very strict with spacing. It’s not like ken’s cr.hp or birdies cr.mp with a ridiculous hurt box. Her command grab is inferior frame-wise. I dont expect the range and frame advantage of zangief’s command grab, who is a pure grapler. But 6 frames start up? really?
She is fun to play I like rushdown play style, I even played a rushdown dj back in sf4 days. But I lack the mindset to play motion characters and I dont think laura is solid.
The more I play with Laura, the more I feel like you need to perform unorthodox moves in order to beat your opponent. She does have weaknesses but you are always playing against a human. Sometimes you just need to vskill forward dash xx command throw and use overheads in strings (like Wolfkrone did) even though you shouldn’t be able to get away with any of that.
I feel like the negatives are amplified when anyone is playing against top top players, the kind of people who are always on point with jab punishes. You are not going to st.mk xx vskill against Tokido and not eat a jab xx srk/critical art; but I’m not playing against Tokido lol.
That’s just how I feel. I don’t think she is a character that is designed for that “solid” game style where you use your tools without taking unnecessary risks. And that is probably the reason why she is so fun to use.
I dont have problem with taking risks, I love to get in opponents face even when I play charge characters. My problem with the characters is I feel like my every attempt to do something gets distrupted by some silly reversal or a jab. and I dont like having no answer when I get knocked down.
By saying getting in opponents face I meant getting in and staying there like rog, not like ibuki. and believe me I do all kinds of crazy shit with laura just to catch people of guard lol (back and forth v-skills, double dashes in to ex sunsetwheel etc). I hate sitting on my ass but I also would like to have some defensive options.
I’ll switch to guile, but I’ll loathe playing with him I think. Yet, I need a pure charge character, I’m having trouble with motions. bad habits die hard.
afaik it works against every character depending on the spacing from which you landed the bolt? Except against Chun, the second LP will always whiff if she blocks the first crouching.
I’m gonna take Infiltrations style of moving crazy and add it to my Luara. With the v-skill but her regular dash doesn’t cover as much distance so I will not use that to dash in and grab to telegraphic. I like wolfkrones Laura but he was to damn nutty with that overhead. I would only do that if I have a nice lead.
That’s one of the things I realized too when I was watching his matches. He went for c.MP into overhead a lot. I cringed because if it’s blocked oh boy.
Yeah i dont like cancelling into overhead either. 0 on hit, punishable on block and there isn’t much reason to block low after a cancelled normal so feels more like a gimmick. The overhead where he had a ex fireball behind him against the opp in the corner was fine, but just needed to be a bit closer for it to handle anti airs as well.
Yes, but it can be very useful at times and can lead to pretty nice damage when it counters something. For instance, in vtrigger-mode people have a tendency of trying to press something when Laura is vskill-dashing back and forth. If you perform a st.mp, cr.mp xx vskill back; many players feel like they have the opportunity to do something or maybe they want to stop you from dashing right back in for more pressure.
So you can catch people off guard with it from max distance and then perhaps press st.lp if there is no CC or do the followup if there is a CC.
ps. Did you know that in this game the full taunt animation will play if you do it just before K.O. I don’t really want to annoy people (I basically never taunt) but I wanted to try it out. Obviously I went on to lose the next match and got perfected; I deserved it for doing such foolishness.
I see some people talking about Wolfkrone’s cancelling into the overhead as a risky move, but here is the thing, you have to play risky with Laura. Laura is not a character where you are going to win often with playing solid, safe Street Fighter. She can’t out footsie a lot of the cast and she needs to make hard reads even once her offense is started. You have to be willing to bite the bullet if you are going to stick with Laura.
That said, I think that is the exact reason why so many players are straying away from Laura. They recognize she has to play risky and no one wants that in a tourney setting. You don’t want to walk away from a loss knowing that you failed to make hard reads. I have had friends tell me this is the exact reason why they won’t play her and were surprised I picked her up because I am traditionally a “safe” player who doesn’t like a risky character.
Laura is capable, but is also risky, and a lot of people would rather just have the capable side of things, and who really blames them?
I’m reasonably sure the reason Wolfkrone was canceling cr.MP into overhead was to catch people jumping, not ducking.
Random unrelated tidbit of the day: I was fighting a Ryu and when I was down to 1 pixel of life I tried to regain advantage with a V-reversal and he canceled the attack I was V-reversaling into a CA (as Ryus often do). I expected it to tag me for one or two hits for the L but to my surprise the V-reversal went through the entire CA and avoided getting chipped to death. Just another reason to remember V-reversals exist in this game.
