Laura General Thread: Who The Hell Is Sean?

I only use EX grab for okizeme on characters without strong reversals. Just mix it up with meaty qcf+LP or f+HP to discourage them from jumping. Works best if they quickstand after a regular f throw or HP bolt.

While I understand the idea of using EX grab to outrun her projectile and catch people guarding, I find most people will just backdash or jump back unless the projectile is right in their face. And even then, at the most effective range you’re better off using LK command grab because the extra startup on EX grab is kind of a liability.

Incidentally my favorite claptrap setup (yes that’s what I’m calling this technique, tell me it doesn’t make sense) is a max range cr. HP -> LP clap. The weird thing about it is that if you cancel cr. HP at the wrong time it puts you too close to trap, but if you master the timing differences this can also work to your advantage.

A Laura just won the first Capcom Pro Tour tourny…

I go through all of SF4 without ever seeing my main win a major and then my SF5 main wins the first SFV CPT major…

I don’t know what to say.

I didn’t even get to see it. Twitch being a hoe right now :expressionless:

But don’t forget the nr.1 rule of this thread: Always say she is bad. Don’t kill the vibe!

What version of fireball should I be using in blockstrings? HP seems to be going well for me right now but I’m not sure if it starts up fast enough. Also, what are her best normals to cancel into forward/backward V-Skill?

Is st.MK in mix-ups really gimmicky or am I missing something? It’s -1 so it should theoretically lose to jabs everytime.

Anyone else feel like Laura gets her V-Trigger faster than other characters? Like I get hit twice and suddenly have it. I feel that using it turns a ton of matchups in her favor, her fireball game becomes 10 times better while in it and your v-trigger doesn’t deplete while doing specials like other characters.

I’ve noticed this too actually. Maybe it’s just because we have to spend more time and life getting in so we don’t notice it as much? Although to be fair I do use my V-skill quite a lot so maybe that contributes

how negative on block are you after a v trigger from a blocked string? For example after a blocked f hp hp.

I feel the same. Gouken never had his chance. Which is funny cause he’d dominate in V.

All of her fireballs start up the same except for ex. Crouching mk and standing mk are pretty good for cancelling away from the opponent.

Yeah, st.MK hasn’t worked well for me. When I’m at that range now I usually go for cr.MK or try to get in range again. I feel like she has better options at that range.

The only exception would be st.MK > V-Trigger. I’m assuming that would give you more frames?

I’ve tested this by having the training dummy do a 3f jab after guard recovery and I found that st.MK xx VT > st.MP, cr.MK xx VT > st.LK and f.HP-HP xx VT > st.LP are all true blockstrings. This means you at +6 after st.MK, +4 after cr.MK and +3 after f.HP-HP.

I have a feeling this doesn’t mean much right now tier-wise. If you watch the match, you can tell Phenom didn’t really have all of Laura’s options in mind, such as her EX Bolt Charge from far away. Players will learn not to press buttons like that, but it’s too early to have all of those things in mind during matches.

It usually puts me out of jab range so a 2nd stMK after a blocked one hits if they are mashing jab
I learned to use stMK with v-dash most the time if not all the time
After watching a lot of VRyu, I learned to v-dash back -> clap after block
I v-skill dash in if hit since stMK doesn’t cancel into anything

stMK has further range than crMK and the range is a lot further than it seems
I’m still trying to catch forward movement with stLK like vryu but using stMK while I work my way there lol
stMK stuffs almost everything

BTW TY VRyu with the streams
You really improved my game
Been winning about 75% of my matches now. I lost all hope when I went from 2200 to 1500 and watching your streams helped me understand her playstyle more which brought me back to silver again

there is a range where s.MP won’t hit but s.MK will and stuff a button they throw out. on CH you can get s.LK.

you are correct that when you use it, if they block, your pressure is usually over (you either have to vskill away to safety or just block). but that doesn’t mean it is gimmicky to use. if s.MK was + laura would be ridiculous.

I was there and that Crimson guy style was sick as fuck. Really, his avante/esquivo game was overwhelming, his opponents was scared to press even a single button when the Bonita get near to them, the threat of CC was to damn high. Even go for a normal to keep her at the bay starts looking stupid if she has meter because of EX Elbow, really impressive. He did all that with a ps4 pad,Crimson plays Laura like a Makoto on crack, full throttle way. We’ll see if that’s the way to follow, even jump out didn’t seems a smart move if the Laura player pay attention on that, air grab or st.MP into mixups wasn’t funny yesterday for his opponents. Really glad to see people putting efforts on her.

People need to use s. MK. I get that it doesn’t combo into thing like s. MP or even have the frame advantage of cr. MP, but it’s hit box, speed and forward movement are all great assets. I fills the space gap between where cr. MP will whiff and while cr. MK is good because it can cancel into lp elbow, I find it gets stuffed by some buttons that s. MK won’t get stuffed by because of speed and hitbox. Yeah, it’s -1, but it doesn’t even seem like it because I throw another s. MK after a blocked one and get counterhit because they are pressing buttons. It’s upward hitbox also has a tendency to hit jumpers out of the air where s. MP would whiff to counteract that. s. MK isn’t as good a button as say s. MP, but it’s utility belongs in your toolbox.
