I can agree once Laura is in she absolutely blows people up. Just like Zangief. The thing is we don’t have as much health as Zangief nor can’t deal with fireballs without meter She doesn’t have the walk speed to bait out long reaching normals. All we can do is be patient and throw fireballs.
You should use her normal grab, not command grab. After whiffing a normal throw you can catch neutral jumps with HP bolt and back jumps with EX bolt. You should use regular throw either way because, as she doesn’t have a medium, medium link, a tech/block mixup has more damage potential than a jump/block mixup.
If they guess command grab and jump, you’ll either get st.LP, st.LP xx LP bolt or a single st/cr.MP. If they would’ve guessed tech, you would’ve gotten CH mp, mp xx LP/MP bolt. Command grab works well after you’ve already established that the mixup is tech/block and not jump/block.
To be fair, if the first medium hits, it’s more than likely going to be counterhit since the alternative is that they just straight up stopped blocking (they could’ve jumped too, but you’ll see them reset in the air).
I’m reading way too much negativity in this thread about this character. Laura definitely has the tools she needs to get wins competently. She’s just an honest character. Being honest doesn’t make her bad. Your play just needs to be solid. Bullshit and gimmicks won’t carry you. You need good patience and defense to play her.
Yes, but solid play and good patience and defense isn’t something unique to her. You can do that with any character. So when you look at character’s tools and options, Laura doesn’t have as much going for her than the better characters
Which are still pretty solid though. So I don’t think there is much room to complain outside of minor nitpicks. A character doesn’t need to be the best to still be good and viable. Laura is fine in her current state IMHO.
After a solid, non stop string of wins last night, tonight landed me a single win, then a crushing string of losses. (Online doesn’t help)
Since first playing fighting games (not just SF) in '92, I’ve never played a character so 50/50 in my win/loss rate.
Not giving up on her, but feel like I might be a sucker. It’s still early days, so the beat goes on
Not giving up on Laura either, I really like her playstyle. Playing against Cammy and looking at her frame data kind of makes me want to play her, too. God I hate fighting against Cammy.
Yeah I have a lot of early grievances with Laura but I’m still sat here about to break my 600th game with her. She’s fun when she works and a nightmare when she doesn’t but hey. It’s still early days.
Real talk though I won’t stop complaining about her VSkill until they make it immune to throws after some startup.
Yeah overhead needs to have some low crush properties
And avoid throws unless it’s a air throw for some frames lol
Also does anyone know the purpose of ex command grab
Didn’t it have throw invincibility in the earlier betas?
Not trying to whine
I generally don’t know when to use this lmfao it’s slow as shit even though it got range
It’s not very good but the way I use it is, if I have established a particular blockstring, and the opponent feels comfortable blocking it until it ends, I can cut it short and squeeze in the EX grab.
Like, Gief can do his running bear grab at any point he thinks they are not specifically looking for it. We, however, have to do ours when we think the opponent is specifically looking to block.
One instance I have been trying to use it more is any block string that ends in a spaced c. MK into LP Fireball. if I have noticed that they will stand pat and block the fireball, I will use EX Command Throw. the LP is slow enough where they won’t be put into block stun because it hits them.
