I was sitting pretty at an 8 win streak last night when I logged off but this morning I went on a 7 game tilt. It’s like everyone figured out my Laura shenanigans over night, good job dick holes. So now I’m looking to improve my play of the character by matching up with more skilled players than myself, especially those both fluent with Laura and characters that give me trouble like Ryu and rave party Ali baba but I will take anything. Didn’t see a Laura matchmaking thread so I’m posting here, my fighter ID is redrockcandy. Having skype would be awesome too because I’d like tips on what I’m doing right or wrong. To get better I just need to immerse myself in the character. (Giggity) I’ll be back on around noon.

Definitely don’t use ex bolt off of any mp or hp confirms, it’s only 10 extra damage and has no additional benefits outside of the 10 dmg. It should only be used to confirm off of cr.mk into knockdown or for the armor to get in. Works great on Dhalsims that like to stand 3/4 screen and hit buttons among other things

Laura doesn’t have good normals compared to everyone else
Her v trigger doesn’t go over lows but everyone else’s does
Her v-skill does go over lows, just not immediately. I used it to hop over Birdie’s budweiser
Maybe he just didn’t hit Laura’s hurt box. From my experience, V-Skill isn’t a low crush. I either get a grab or a counter hit except when it hits of course.

This isn’t Tekken, there aren’t “low crush” moves in the game lol. Sweeps hit people jumping all the time. Any peculiar avoid properties are usually caused by abnormal hurtboxes.

The hurtbox is raised up on the 14th frame. It’s not a particularly useful window being that late but it does go over some lows.
Sweeps and low jabs get low crushed by chun and Nash overhead normals
As for the tekken reference, sf4 had a lot of moves that went over lows so it’s not just tekken
EX bolt juggles, this lets you V-Skill under your opponent and change direction, HP Bolt Charge into them if they’re cornered, or chain into 2HP to bring them down from the air (regardless of corner status).
I agree that you shouldn’t rely on it that much, but 10 extra damage? 5MP xx LP/MP/HP clap (all three do the same damage) are 114 damage, and 5 MP xx EX clap is 141, so it’s 30 damage more than the regular claps, and 80 damage over your hitconfirm in the first place. You can then chain into cr.HP for 213 damage total off the MP confirm. If you’re up against a cornered opponent you can cancel into HP bolt charge (i.e. 5 MP xx EX clap xx HP bolt charge) you can get 261 damage, but this execution is really rough!
I think 5MP/HP xx MP bolt charge target combo is a much more consistent hitconfirm, it’s 186 damage (if you start with MP, 206 if HP hitconfirm) and much easier to do than either of the two double setups noted before.
Also, on jump in try MK, 5 MP xx MP bolt charge -> target combo. The latter is a solid 225 damage on any jumpin provided you can hitconfirm it.
I just picked up laura and she is super fun. Any quick tips you guys can give me? I’ve mostly been cancelling blockstrings into thunder clap and unsafe into v trigger for 50/50 mixup. lk lk into bolt charge is a good hit confirm as well. I played some mika and cammy earlier, but man I’m really loving how laura plays. The mind games are real!
Okay Boys. I need help in the Ryu matchup. Played 2 FT5’s yesterday and I really struggled against him despite winning them both by fucking inches.
We lose the footsie war hard. Makes neutral a serious struggle, I won purely through stupid mistakes the other guy made, it seems he has more consistent damage output and flat out owns half the real estate on the screen, it’s mad tough.
Plus, EX Bolt feels like such a fucking waste.
I have been playing her a little more and have drawn up some more impressions. I lost 0-50 vs a friend who played Nash and 0-10 to Necali, These guys consistently push out pressure and usually combo into a 25% damage punish even if I am caught by a 3f startup frametrap.
- I need to find some blockstrings that allow me to pressure. What would be her go-to blockstring?
- Same with frame traps
- EX Elbow aint great, maybe with good timing to break through fireball spam or as an escape, these are the 2 times I see it being useful
- throw -> 6HP, 2MP, 5MP. This seems legit and if you time it correctly you end up hitting a meaty 5MP and being on +8 then you can commandthrow with 6f startup which will only lose to reversals/dps. If they jump you recover fast enough to antiair.
- 2LK,2LK xx L.Elbow good range and damage
- Besides her L.Elbow using her specials are difficult MP may have good framedata but its difficult to land playijng footsies
- If you do manage to get in on a whiff you can do silly damage which is probably why her normal game aint great
I’m still trying to learn her basics, but the servers are not really cooperating… long loading times and a lot of issues connecting to the servers and sending the results… I spend most of my time staring at a black screen with that terrible square animation at the bottom
I’ve been winning mostly by using cr.MK xx LP elbow for pressure and by AA fools with HP elbow. There’s a lot of day-one gimmicks you could do right now, like LP fireball into dash > command throw or EX command throw
I have yet to find some solid options with her, it seems she’s pretty low on most people’s tier list right now
So, as a recap, what are our meaty options after:
- command grab
- forward throw
- back throw (dash, st lk)
- mp elbow with punch follow up (st hp)
- kick follow up
- hp elbow (f hp)
Started playing Laura a few nights ago with some friends and had a TON of fun. I played Abel in SFIV and she reminds me of him in a few simple ways. Bummed to see that even the people in the Laura thread think she’s the worst in the game. Seems like this always happens to me…

Yeah i noticed LP Bolt punishes jabs too, but generally for now i like to do back vskill into fireball. Free pressure if they block or they force themselves into the corner since people like to jump back to avoid the whole fireball situation altogether. If i can find a good way to punish jump back then it’ll be great.

The two buffs I want for Laura is either less pushback or more range on both her MPs, and an air to air normal that causes a juggle state. That’d be real nifty for chasing down backjumps.
