Regarding Alex, I think it’s too soon to tell. One major strength he has over Laura is his range on normals and specials. However his anti-airs seem to be lacking and he is very susceptible to cross ups in my somewhat limited experience playing against him. In a lot of ways, the two characters are very similar.
What do you mean by worse? Number of bad matchups?
Hey, im looking to try out Laura and was wondering what, as a beginner to the character, should i be focusing on. Should i start out trying all the mixups and resets and stuff, or start slow and just learn her fundamentals? Also are there any particular things i should be working on in training mode with her?
In my humble, low level opinion: fundamentals first. I would learn the ranges of her normals, her simple combos (lp/lk into lp bolt, MP into mp bolt, HP target combo, etc) and practice anti airs with the record functions. After that, I would spend some time with her v-trigger dash and get used to canceling from normals. Once you feel solid with those I would spend time on setups and mixups.
Anyone interested in some beginner matches? Someone around Rookie to Silver to get some matches in. Trying to learn Laura and it’s pathetic atm. Or even a higher level to give some pointers in what I’m doing wrong?
Where do you live? PC or PS4?
ON, Canada - PS4
Is it me or is her dash after the QCB+PP > s.HP really hard? Trying to do the reset thing… Maybe I’m just too rusty at fighters. Been a while.
Takes a while to get use to this, but you’ll get the hang of it. Initially, I had a problem with the s.HP part but worked out it was just my timing.
What’s your main issue, is it not coming out at all or the dash is coming out too late or you’re accidentally doing the overhead instead of the vskill-dash?
Canceling from 5HP is usually done a little later than from other medium buttons but I never really had any issues with the dash. I actually have more issues not eating the 5HP/5MK before the dash.
Maybe try another button until you get a feeling for her V-Skill. st.MK is pretty good, too and can even be delayed in V-Trigger for some further shenangans like meaty overhead.
The dash just seems way too late. I was attempting this for the fun of it: https://gfycat.com/JaggedYoungArmyworm
I guess I’m supposed to use the command dash ._.
I’ve never really played a character with command grabs, so wondering. When should you use Light sunset wheel and when should you use Heavy?
From what I remember, the Light version comes out faster and has better range. Is it ever worth going for the Heavy version?

They’re all the same speed, (6 frame startup) but you’re correct about the range.
I tend to use the heavy one after a lp bolt confirm, or dash in/v-skill dash that leaves me at point blank range. I’ve seen some do a Light version after a st.lk on-block, as it has pretty ok range after.
Light version can be done after st. LK (+3 on block, beats 3 framers) which will be your basic tick throw. You can do it also after all the strings I’ve been discussing in my last post on the tech thread - the ones ending with EX clap are still +3 on block. You can always use this version to be safe or against characters with fast back walk speed.
When you can use the heavy version:
- after VSF cancel, including st. MK cross under reset
- after L Bolt
- when dashing in after a knockdown, assuming you conditioned them to block. It works on back throw and after a command grab but not after a forward throw. Only after back throw you’re +.
In short, use it when you’re sure you’ll be sticking to the opponent.
I’be been away from fighting games for more than 10 years (basically stopped at SF zero 3) and I’m trying to get back into it now.
What kind of training can you people suggest for Laura? I’ve been playing some casual matches and I seem to be unable to properly combo
