Sooooo…how the heck do I use rocks? Ignoring who the point character is for the moment, I still don’t quite grasp the…theory I suppose you’d call it, behind using molecular shield. Whenever I play around with rocks, I find myself pretty much just calling them out full screen and then dashing in behind it and that’s about it really. Oh, and extending corner combos, but that’s pretty much anybody’s assist.
Do you guys call it up close, mid screen, full screen? I just don’t get how I should treat it. The butt load of time it stays active on the screen feels like it suggests I should use it up close to stuff out assist calls, but it feels like it’s not quite fast enough of an assist to do that.
If you mean rocks as an assist the main use of it is that it’s a nice middle ground between plasma beam and hidden missles. It stays on screen longer than plasma beam to give you more time to lock down the opponent which is great for mix up style characters since you get a lot of frames where they can’t advance guard you away. The assist also has a hit box in the back which means it’s good for blowing up teleport/command dash behind mix ups.
With my team Dante and X23 benefit way too much from a beam for their left right mix ups and it clears projectiles off screen faster and easier than rocks. Dante’s projectiles are all slow start up and don’t really cover the screen at a rapid rate like when active like a beam so beam helps for the coverage.
Rocks better compliments characters that already can put projectiles on the screen quickly like Magneto. The assist will protect him from teleport mix ups and travel forward at a rate that’s nice for locking people down for high low mix ups. The slower rate you can put the rocks on the screen compared to doom beam means you’ll want a character that can already spam up the screen with projectiles to get good clearance for the rocks. X23 specifically can’t make a whole lot of use out of rocks because she can’t put enough lasers on the screen to get it to come out safely and follow it up (because she has no lasers at all LOL). That’s why doom beam is great for her because it gives her a laser to firefight with and set up her mix ups and pressure.
I used to use rocks for a bit before switching to missiles, but when I used rocks it was with Haggar on point. I felt that Haggar was a bit too slow to make good use of the beam assist, and that hidden missiles slowed the game down too much for my Haggar playstyle. Rocks gave Haggar some coverage for getting in at Haggar’s wavedash speed and would help lock the opponent down blocking, which let me time perfect rockstun -> hoodlum M shenanigans. I also used them to extend tron combos and OTGs but I eventually moved onto missiles as it gives haggar an OTG off of pipe.
So essentially Jin hit it on the head, it’s kind of a mix of the slower, lockdown characteristics of missiles and a beam.
What kind of bnb’s do you use when you land pipe? I was putting together a random concept team of Thor (mighty spark)/Doom (missles)/Haggar(maytag). I wanna see if I can use missles to land some OTG’s off of Thor’s combos. I can kinda do stuff like pre emptively call hidden missles and then go for an air throw and get super off the OTG but maybe what you do with Haggar can help me figure out a bnb for Thor also.
Hmm, well lack of spam would explain why I had a heck of a time trying to use them properly. I was fiddling around with Wesker + rocks, since I remember somebody here raving about how under appreciated rocks are at the moment. But yeah, it was way too hard to keep opponents grounded with that duo. Thanks for the thoughts.
I’ll try to slap together a combo video because my combos are location dependent and require different timings depending on the situation >_<. plus I’ve always wanted to publish what I could do with tron/haggar/doom :3
You can also easily setup the Tron/Doom DHC glitch using missiles during her BnB.
just an example: j.H, cr.l,st.m.f+m, jump, j.m,j.m, j.h(land), st.m, f+m,jump,j.m, j.h,j.s, call doom, st.s, sj, j.m, j.m,j.h,j.s, (land) backdash, qcf+l, King Kobun, DHC to SF> nasty doom combo comes after.
Doom whiffing his SF will help in certain situations to get maximum damage, not sure how far this will go but with sentinel it helps a bit.
Situation: solo rocket punch (punish maybe or trying to keep cr.m safe)
Rocket Punch (midscreen or corner) xx HSF does around 334-360k
Rocket Punch (midscreen or corner) xx HSF DHC to SF(whiff) dash up launch (whatever combo you want) can do roughly 840k and build meter during the combo to hyper again with doom. Anyone have any other ideas such as this?
Does anyone else think the doom mirror match is utterly stupid? It consists of both players superjumping upwards, doing air photon shot, then footdiving in unison, criss crossing as they do so.This shit is dumb.
Played Doom at NYC fight club in Umvc3. Landing an air S on an opponent in the air gets a hard knockdown, which would get you a combo about equal to what you would get from an air throw (like 3 footdive corner loops). Faster projectiles, faster footdives, faster j.h, Doom is just overall better. I tried to mash with photon array, and it seemed the same to me. Maybe it adds damage to the hits, but it didn’t seem to add any hits.
I have an old video of a Doom mirror that I’m sure is probably deleted by now but basically we did nothing but put fireworks on the screen from full screen until the time ran out. We also held on down back for like 5 seconds straight like it was a SFIV Rog mirror.
Oh here it is.
43 minutes into this video.
That was back when I was still scrubbing it out with Wesker and had no idea how to work dash cancels into my game with doom. I knew combos and beam LOL.
I started messing with a team of Dante Doom Haggar (which ive chatted a bit with DevilJin about, props for all the advice!!) in my exploration of Haggar lariat abuse. I was wondering, as Doom, if you guys had a recommendation between Jam Session and Weasel Shot. I can kinda make an argument either way. I’ve been going weasel for the lockdown mixup potential (Cold Star Junior), since I like to play Doom aggressive when I can, but I figure if there exists a practical and damaging jumping combo off a landed Jam, that might make Jam Session seem more like the right choice.
As an assist itself, I found during the distance game, Jam was only slightly helpful because if they don’t try to approach, it’s not doing much. But if I’m rushing down, the Weasel feels more helpful to get some box jump/empty tri jumps in there. Its very rare I feel Weasel is better than jam, so hopefully someone who knows more about it than me can clear things up.
On a side note, does anyone know of any strong players besides DevilJin01 who use the Dante Doom duo, so as to search up video reference, etc? Thanks!
I would stick to Shot for the lockdown/mixup potential as you stated. Hidden Missiles, Sphere Flame, and Lariat can help with vertical support so I feel like Jam Sesh might be redundant… (I’m not a Dante player, so take that with a grain of salt)
In another thread, liquid referenced a post where he goes over doom welcome setups, but the link didn’t work. Liquid (or whoever), any idea where that is?
its the one that says “inhcoming character mixups” or whatever.
I’ve tried your team for the exact same reason, but have since changed it. Initially I had used weasel shot as the supporting assist but the reason why cold star “works” is because of the time its out there, weasel shot is a safer assist, but does not lock them down nearly as long, allowing you very little time to work a mixup. imo, jam session is much better because
when you zone, it acts as a vertical zoning tool and a get off me assist
when you mixup incoming characters, you just use left/right mixups (foot dive whiff in corner, jump and dash df or dash down etc) with the assist call. keeps them there for an ample amount of time, or u can just wait for the assist to cause them to fly and follow up juggle.
in any case, I actually play that lineup differently than i would with amaterasu. with ame i would go doom/amaterasu/haggar or doom/haggar/amaterasu
with dante, i would only go with dante/doom/haggar or dante/haggar/doom. Dante is much better with doom’s assist backing him while the vice - versa isn’t necessarily true. neither weasel shot or jam session is that effective.
