Hi all. I play a lot with my brother and he uses a team with sentinal/magneto, dorm, and shuma. Sentinal is no problem, and but I’m having a hard time entering dorm with shuma’s mystic ray assist. Dooms beams and rays get eaten up by Dorm’s pillars and fire enhanced normals. Foot dive is unsafe, especially with shuma assisting. Is there something I’m missing or is this just a bad matchup?
I’m not sure how Dorm’s normals would eat up projectiles unless they have projectile immune frames or something. Doom’s H plasma beam has a lot of priority and I would assume would cancel out the priority of the Dorm pillar. L plasma beam is 15 frame start up which is pretty damn fast for a projectile. Only beam projectile that’s faster is Magneto’s L and M disruptahs but Doom’s beam still has better projectile durability. H beam should take out everything including shuma ray assist then that should buy you time to throw up some hidden missles on point (like 2 or 3) then move your way in with some dash jump cancels and start an offensive.
The flames of Dorm’s normals are projectile immune and eat them up. Most notable are his medium hit and launchers. They will straight eat up projectiles. Same is true of the pillar special. I’ve tried hidden missiles, but whenever I dash or foot dive in, shuma’s assist either pushes me out for forces me to block. When that happens, dorm just blocks the missiles on the way down. That leaves me reset at full screen and vulnerable to pillars all over again.
Just to add, this is only in concern to my phoenix team. I can’t justify calling phoenix at full screen for an easy chaotic flame/mystic ray punish. With other teams, I can call her to assist, but that won’t work here.
How do you guys approach/start combos with Doom? Tri-jump? If you do tri-jump what moves do you use with it?
What I usually do if there’s THAT much shit on the screen is just do sphere flame super. Sphere flame super has strong projectile durability and allows you to move freely while the rain is coming down. Once the rain comes down it covers the whole screen almost and allows you time to get in and start an offense.
Tri-jump :l: or work pretty well. You also want to do some airdash mixups too. Airdash forward
for high, airdash down forward :l: for low. If you have a low hitting assist, you can throw that out while doing the airdash forward
to create a hard to block situation.
random sphere flame = chaotic flame punishment.
You can do H plasma beam first then cancel to sphere flame to force them into block/hit stun and clear a path for the sphere flame. Dormammu + a lot of meter probably does blow up Doom’s get in/spacing. I was testing in training mode and nothing seems to beat Chaotic Flame once its out. Your best bet is just to to keep the H beams on the screen and if you force them to block or get hit by one just get the sphere flame out and move in. Once you do the sphere flame super and the screen freezes even if Dormammu does Chaotic Flame the super will rain down and hit him out of it so you even out (with maybe him doing a bit more damage to you but it’s better than nothing). Dormammu can only completely punish you for doing sphere flame if he does the chaotic flame before your sphere flame freeze activates.
I see the potential Dr. Doom has but the effort and skill needed to play him at this level is really high. Other characters require far less effort and do so much more. He has a ton of bad matchups. The plus side is when you do see your doom improving, it is incredibly rewarding. The only thing you can do is keep refining your strategies/techniques/etc.
I’m still in a state where I’m thinking rather than reacting when I use Doom, since he has so many tools to use. The comfort level I need to be with Doom to be in that “reacting” state is still months away it seems. Anyways, DevilJin01, would you mind if I add you so maybe we can swap ideas/learn from each other? Since I’m from the EC (New York), the lag should be very minimal.
been working in the lab to find some nifty resets
:l::h::s: -> super jump ->
:f::h: -> airdash down ->
-> j.
air dash down, let them air reset, jump then go for a back air throw into another damaging combo. it’s possible to get the same reset after doing another rep of the buktooth loop instead of going for the first j:m:, but it’s really hard to time. hopefully going to try and implement it soon
I posted a video of a few resets of grabs and low hitting assists if you havent seen it already.
I encountered a situation in my last tournament that I didnt know how to get around at all.I only had Doom left against my opponents Trish in the second match and he just ran away with flight and air traps.How does Doom get around this?
It happens in the second match of the set:

Any tips? Thanks.
Only tips I’ve got are to try to discourage Trish from jumping by throwing out a few Spirit Fingers. It pretty well covers most of the screen ground to air. While you may not get much damage at all for landing it nor will you get much chip, I doubt she wanted to take anything at that point. You can lame her right back that way. Plus you can build meter with that and throw out a Sphere Flame pretty close to below her. I saw you try twice to hit it, but you got stuffed once and were across the stage the second time.
Well…against characters like Trish you can play 2 ways. If the Trish is offensive or you have a feeling they’re going to go for a dive kick at all just sit and wait for them to dive then XF guard cancel level 3 them if you have 3 meters. It does enough damage to one shot kill Trish no matter how much health she has. I do this a couple times in the match videos I had vs. the Trish player in the xanadu videos. Just remember that for some strange reason she can do dive kick on you in the corner without worrying about getting hit by guard cancel level 3. As long as you’re both mid screen she’s dead on any blocked dive kick.
The other way is to play more offensively. The way you should have went about the match if you knew the Trish player was going to do nothing but lame was turn on XF. Doom gets 30 percent faster when he’s in XF level 3 and anything he touches Trish with including a back throw easily leads to instant death considering she has below average health. She didn’t really have much meter either so there wasn’t really much stopping you from getting in with a few wave dashes and mounting an offense. You also really need to start using heavy gun once you turn on X Factor. XF3 heavy gun (j.H) is hella good. The speed at which you can jump and the speed at which the laser comes out increases to a point where you can basically lock people down and get in easily. If it hits a jumping opponent and you are close enough to land a c.M its a free death combo. The only thing they can do to this without throwing a projectile at it is push block it. You can bait that by throwing one out, then jumping and not throwing heavy gun out on the next one and then you get space to move in and do what you want. Spam that shit in level 3 XF like Magneto spams disruptah. Especially against characters like Wolverine and Trish. The only character that like really gives you a hard time doing it is Wesker cuz he can shoot you from the ground and get a full fucking combo. Against Wesker you pretty much have no choice but to play lame and sit on crouch block and wait for him to teleport forward and try to counter hit him with a c.L or look for the upwards teleport and air throw him or sphere flame him out.
Part of your problem overall was you spent WAY TOO MUCH meter. I dont know if you have trouble using Haggar’s supers or what but you’re supposed to go into Haggar’s punch super after landing lariat. Everytime you landed lariat with Haggar you would go into body press which does like 10 percent damage LOL. You did this twice burning meter for no reason. Haggar’s punch super is mashable so you can get up to 30 hits with the super and it will do 350k damage which is huge for a level 1. Learn to mash that super so you can get big damage off the lariat instead of settling with body press which is only good IMO for DHC. If you’re going to put Doom in the back you’ve GOT to make sure you have at least 2 and a half to 3 meters ready for him to use. His ability to kill lower health characters like Trish with XF guard cancel level 3 is too good. You can just sit on it and Trish can’t dive kick you or block string you even once without worrying about instant death. Which allows you to just walk in like a boss and amount an offense on her. If she starts to turtle like she probably should turn on your XF, put some heavy gun on the screen and get in and high low her into death combo or back throw her into s.H into sphere flame which is the easiest one shot kill you can do to her.
You need to work on your corner bnb combos as well. You should have made that bnb in the corner last long enough in the second fight to kill Trish. The fact that you didn’t kill Trish in a situation where Doom can do more than 1 million damage without X Factor (hitting someone in the corner) was not a good look.
Canceling Haggar’s lariat into punch super (especially mashed) is a good way to get yourself killed, since your opponent has a pretty good chance of simply falling out of the super between the last two hits (the hitstun scaling in that super appears to be broken). And as you may be aware, opponent blocking the last hit of that super = incoming bad day for Haggar.
Say what you want about lariat -> body press… I’ve never lost a character for successfully comboing it, which is more than I can say for punch rush.
Hmmm…well if that’s the case either way I would try not to combo into body press unless you have another character to DHC follow up. I would also only do that if you know you’ll still be able to build up the meters you need to get Doom out there nearly stocked on level 3 super plus level 3 XF. Unless you absolutely need the 10 damage you get off of body press just save the meter for Doom because it’s going to pay off big for him later any way. Haggar does his thing to make the team less succeptible to mix ups as assist but dont go burning meter unnecessary I say. There were a lot of times where he just threw random taskmaster arrow super hoping it would hit (which of course it didn’t) and burnt mad meter that way also. Unless you know the arrows are going to hit or you have Tasky in XF where they’ll chip crazy save them for combos. Taskmater does like 800k damage with one meter or 400k off any throw with the super.
I’m just saying dont waste body press on every landed lariat. Try to opt to actually like land combos and damage. Which was probably the biggest problem he had. Like around 29 minutes in where he tries to chip out Wesker with 2 supers and doesn’t end up killing him so he wasted 2 valuable meters for Doom trying to kill Wesker and Wesker survived and raw tagged himself back in. Doing supers all over the place praying for damage rather than setting up actual combos for damage. Doom in the back without meter is like…so much less viable. The amount of things you can do with Doom in XF and meter is too strong to blow away early on trying to chip out Wesker.
Ahh thanks DevilJin.You’ve made me rethink the strategy of my team a bit now.Like you said, I think that is my main problem now is, I use way too much meter and Doom needs that threat of XFC into Level 3 to be a good anchor.
For Haggar I use the body press super because its easier to confirm into than punch super but I’ve figured out the timing to get it consistently in training mode and will use it next time.
Also what you said about the laser gun has made me experiment with it in training mode and yeah its pretty good at dealing damage to aerial opponents whilst in XF lvl3.Better than doing photon shots full screen for sure.I should also have gone more throws aswell because like you said any backthrow=death in lvl3 XF.
Thanks for the breakdown and I appreciate everything you post on SRK.Your walls of text are actually good unlike the usual ranting/ramblings on SRK.
No probs meign. I really like messing with Doom and will most likely make a turtorial video to help people learn how to actually play him and not just use him for the HIDDEN MISSILES assist. LOL.
The only time I use photon shots since Doom is in the back any way is the air photon shot to get something on the screen from the air then ADDF in with M to start an offense. It’s not bad to start from the air when you want to start an offense but generally I think Doom can get by without much use of the ground one. The damage you get for landing it is piss poor on the ground any way. Might as well just use the ground photon array super which gives you plus 2 on block and does more damage and chip. If you land ground photon array on hit and have a lot of meter you can actually one frame link it into level 3. Pretty fun to do if you’re in XF level 3. LOL. 1.3 million damage for 4 meters.
You and Karsticles (SRK Forums’ Dormammu expert) are my two gods. I’m trying to mix up my air options with Doom more.
Hey Dooms.
I just started playing Doom last night and I honestly really think he has potential to be one of the best characters in the game. It just feels like not enough people are using him and taking advantage of his ability. He reminds me of Magneto in soooo many ways and I think that is why i started to play him.
My original team was Wolverine-Magneto-Akuma
but my problem w magneto here is that his assists i feel all around are not better than Dooms. With Doom I have more life, build GOOD meter but not AS MUCH as Magneto, still do not need to burn hyper meter to do damage, and have safer pressure.
My question is this…which team(s) do you think sound like a solid idea/scary? (All teams will end with my Akuma w/ Tatsu Assist)
Wolverine (Slash) - Magneto (Disruptor)
Wolverine (Slash) - Doom (Missiles)
Magneto (Disruptor) -Doom (missiles)
I’m also considering if I should switch up Magnetos assist when put with doom to be hyper grav to help doom with OTGS but my thought is that he can already otg on his own with ST H.
Also am possibly looking at the fact that missiles might not be the best assist to help out wolverine and maybe i should use molecular shield or plasma beam.
Thoughts? I’d like to hear some input from people who have experience w doom.
